No Robert Englund For Nightmare Remake

Robert-Englund-Freddy-Remake.jpgWhen word came out last week the Michael Bay’s company was planning on remaking the classic horror film “A Nightmare On Elm Street” there was come cautious optimism going around because word was that Robert Englund may come back to reprise his role as Freddy Krueger for the project.

However, it seems those rumors have been quickly shot down according to ShockTillYouDrop:

A number of industry sources recently phoned in to shed some light on the early discussions going on behind-the-scenes regarding “Nightmare”…and none of them include Englund starring as Krueger. The franchise facelift includes discovering a new actor to polish up the finger knives and play the iconographic dream role Englund has practically made his second skin since ’84.

Disheartening news for the fans, maybe, but rumor has it Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes is taking “Nightmare” back to square one…as in fresh start, hitting the reset button, making it their own (think “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” ’03 and Friday the 13th ’09). Because of this decision, they’d like to find another actor to carry the new Krueger into future films.

I’ve got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, Robert Englund has been Freddy Krueger to me for over 20 years, and it’s nigh impossible for me to envision someone else wielding the immortal glove of blades. HOWEVER…

If it indeed is a NEW Nightmare, then I can totally see where they’re coming from with wanting a new face to make the character his own. This does make sense to me, and although this won’t be a popular thing to say… it’s probably the right decision if you’re going to make a remake at all.

  1. Instead of a remake, go back to the beginning. Freddy is alive, and a very loving father to 3 girls of his own. All 3 go missing then later turn up dead. The 3 little darlings were torn to shreds. Freddy is absolutely destroyed by it all and begins to act strange. He vows revenge and makes a glove with blades to use on his daughters killer, if ever the fiend is found. Tragically, other little girls turn up dead in the same fashion of Freddy’s 3. Suspicion turns toward Freddy, and he is arrested, tried, and released. Convinced he is guilty, the parents of the victims plot to get their own justice. It’s now Christmas eve. Freddy donned in a red and green Christmas sweater stands before the graves of his girls and places gifts before the 3 stones. Suddenly! the silence is broken with the screeching of tires. An angry mob emerges from the disarray of cars and a foot chase begins. It ends at the boiler room where to defend himself, Freddy puts on the glove. Surrounded by the angry mob, he swears his innocence, but they don’t care. They dash gasoline all over him, then light him up. Fully aflame and screaming in pain he falls to the ground dead. Soon after, the true killer is caught, but none of the mob are ever charged. NOW! THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS!!!!! A home video plays of Freddy’s 3 jumping rope, and as the screen fades to black Freddy’s laugh echoes throughout the theater. This treatment needs a few fill ins and touch ups, but wouldn’t this make a better picture?

  2. hey everyone look i think maybe we should give this remake a chance i mean we are in a new era ive been watching nightmare on elm streets sinse i was 2 yrs old.. and i agree that there will never be a as good freddy kruger as the best robert england but i can say that the texas chainsaw massacare remake was good,as well as the hills have eyes, and halloween ….they havn’t made a nightmare on elm street with just freddy sinse wes cravens new nightmare which was a damn good one i really enjoyed the plot to it… but evil never dies, and you can never kill off freddy because there will always be freddy fans as long as we live thanks and much love j.

  3. They need Robert Englund back!
With Jason Voorhees it doesn’t matter who the actor is (he walks like frankensein (no acting required) , he doesn’t speak (no acting required) and he doesn’t have a face (NO FACE REQUIRED!!)). The same with Michael Myers! Freddy’s not just another killing machine wearing a mask! He has a demented personality, a way of doing things, he likes to play with his victims, but most of all he calls teenage girls “Bitch!” in such a way he makes it seem pervy… So they need to have Englund play it!!!!!

  4. Robert Englund is the man! Period. Use him! Number 1: He’s been Freddy for 20 years; Number 2: He’s a classical trained stage actor…and, well, that’s just cool as sh*t in my opinion.

  5. Hmmm…whatever would inspire long time fans of this franchise to think this remake is going to suck?

    Lets see…

The Hills Have Eyes – remade…and it sucked.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre – remade…and it sucked.
    Halloween – remade…and it sucked.
Prom Night – remade…and it sucked.
Black Christmas – remade…and it sucked.
The Omen – remade…and it sucked.
Amityville Horror – remade…and it sucked.
The Fog – remade…and it sucked.
Dawn of the Dead – remade…and it sucked.
The Hitcher – remade…and it sucked.
House on Haunted Hill – remade…and it sucked.
The Haunting – remade…and it sucked.
    Psycho – remade…and it sucked.

Patinum Dunes pops up more than once on that shitlist.
Remakes are 100% about a bottom line from the writing on up. All movies end up that way but at a good stories heart there is usually some inspiration and art.

There is no Freddy without Robert Englund. Michael Myers had almost ten different people play him because he didn’t speak. It was all about his gate. Same goes with Jason. Freddy is a character that was created just as much through Robert Englund’s superb acting as it was by Wes Craven.

Any other actor will either have to rip him off or go in a completely different direction. Catch 22. If they rip him off…they should have just used him. If they deviate…its not Freddy or Nightmare.

I used to have an open mind about horror remakes until damn near every one sucked.

Save your ten bucks and go buy the original if you’re interested.

  6. Hate to say this, but Englund himself was on G4’s “Attack of the Show”. He’s totally for the remake, so i’m on his side. Yes it’s sad that he isn’t going to be freddy, but he stated that he likes the idea because now with CGI they can do a lot more things they couldn’t before.

No one can replace Englund as Freddy, but we should at least have an open mind about it.

  7. were going on 25 years with Englund as Freddy. This is a disgrace to myself, horror fans, Wes Craven, and Robert Englund. The only way Freddy will die is taking Robert out of the movies…. he is Freddy.

    RIP Freddy Krueger. (1984-2008)

Dont forget about Ash now, he’s needing a remake, how about you get that Shiloh kid from Transfomers.

    Screw hollywood.

I’ve watched every single Noes movie and to be honest seeing someone else trying to replace Robert as freddy then he has a big glove to fill! I think that it would be clever if they introduced another character who is like freddy and tries to take over and become the new dream demon.

  9. I’m so against this. Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. He doesn’t deserve this lack of respect. We must fight for what we believe in.

Please join me and other fans in the Nightmare Remake protest.

Do you support the REAL Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund)?? Then please sign the No Nightmare Remake Petition!

    http://www. ipetitions. com/petition/nonewnightmare/

The goal is to get around 1,000 signatures…. with your help, we can do it! Please Post this wherever you can. After we obtain enough signatures, I plan to print out the petition and send it to the film companies through regular mail.

  10. I’m a huge fan of Robert Englund and the NOES series, and I honestly don’t think it should be remade. For example, I’ve seen both the original Halloween and the Rob Zombie Halloween… and the remake was nothing special. There was no need for it to be made, just as there is NO need for NOES to be remade. Come up with some new movie ideas instead of remaking brilliant classics.

  11. I second Serena. There is absolutely NO excuse for even attempting to remake this. Enough with the god-damn re-makes of EVERY fucking thing under the sun!!!!!!!

  12. I still cant understand why people get so infuriated when a remake is optioned. If its bad it doesnt tarnish the orginal if anything it makes it more admired. I m all for a remake of this, I thought freddy got a bit too comical during his last years, I mean the guy was child killer!!!! Also i m happy they got new blood as freddy.

  13. I think this one could well be remade. I personally have NOT seen the original. Seen parts of it for sure, but never stuck around to se it through.

It’s almost one of those films the older generation holds in such high regard when you finally get round to seeing it, hype-in-hand, it really lets you down. The sudden realisation that, “oh, this is just a variation on the slasher movie” comes crashing down…

  14. remakes are most of time bad because it will never top the original source material……texas chainsaw, the omen, and holloween, the hills have eyes were the few that werent horrible representations but still dont capture what made the original good….and no englund and michael bay doesnt bode well for this one

  15. Well … Im dying a little inside now. But, there is a glimps of hope in every film (except JLA) Maybe if the trailer scares me Ill want to see it but the last trailer that did that was i think SAW1.
