Justice League is Back On Again

In the Train wreck in waiting, Off-Again-On-Again saga of the Justice League film, the switch seems to once again be turned to ON. And I have to say that switch is looking a little loose with all that extra usage. Its like a dirty whore of switches. Too many uses and no one wants to touch it when its done.

Coming Soon says:

In an article at the Herald Sun in which director George Miller praises Megan Gale’s screen test for Wonder Woman in the Justice League live-action movie, the following bit was dropped as well:

Initially slated to be filmed Down Under, Miller conceded production had been moved offshore, with a plan to resume filming next year.

There are a billion things wrong with this project. There is no way they should be considering this film with the same characters existing in paralell franchises.

How is the Batman from THIS movie supposed to fit in with Bale’s Dark Knight? Or Superman? Wonder Woman has been rejected and rewritten so many times we may never see a feature film, yet she’s an automatic member for this?

I had thought that a short while ago when WB and its DC Comics film group were going to sit down and work out its interests that they would be following a similar marketing aspect as Marvel Films. Introduce the characters in their own films and THEN consider an ensemble story.

I honestly wouldn’t mind if they said they scrapped the Justice League movie and made a Teen Titans movie. The Titans are mostly younger versions of the same characters anyways. Robin, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Superboy? Why not just make a film with THOSE characters instead of trying to double dip on the trinity. Ms Gale looks like she’d make a decent Troia – WonderGirl.

DC has three franchises that could rock the movie world. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. They call this the Trinity of DC. Because they are like unto gods in popularity.

EVERYTHING ELSE is secondary. No other franchise within the DC Universe has any hope of paralelling these.

So lets fart out some weak ensemble movie with younger versions of these that are not in continuity with our existing franchises.

I am starting to think the execs at the WB are Marvel fans.

  1. Don’t get your panties in a bunch over JLA. Chances are very good this thing will be in development hell for 15 years before it ever gets real close to becoming a reality. If WB can’t even get another SUPERMAN movie off the ground: JLA has no chance whatsoever!

  2. I will form an opinion of the whole movie once it comes out (if that ever happens… this is the third time they said justice league is back on)

But so far they havent given us much to look forward to. They have stopped and started this project 3 times already with no script.

  3. Actually there is only one franchise that is being ignored and thats Batman.

Singer/Routh Superman franchise is dead. Does anyone really believe that there is going to be another one?? Come on. Its dead. Done for. Finished.

Personally I wait until I see some actual footage before I write off a project completely.

I will at least let them begin to film some footage before I jump up and down about second hand info I got off the internet.

  4. @FinalJoe, why the hell would you want Manuela Arcuri as Wonder Woman? She has never been in anything that even has her speaking ENGLISH.

Sure, shes pretty, but that’s all shes got going for her.

  5. Instead of a Justice League movie, why not Warner Bros. produce a Batman and Superman movie with Christian Bale and Brandon Routh playing their respective roles? This would be a better alternative.

  6. @Shane – “you don’t always have to see the entire film to be able to pass some sort of judgment on it”

So if I refuse to read any more of your comment I should be qualified to pass judgment on your viewpoint?

You are wrong. You do have to see a whole movie to pass judgment on it. Then you are fully qualified to form an opinion. Otherwise you are forming an opinion on a scene (still valid) but then assuming everything else in that film will be the same quality as that scene.

I saw a woman storm out of Moulin Rouge because she refused to watch a movie about a hooker.

Also, keep in mind that the current feelings about this movie are based entirely on what we already know. Admittedly it is little, but with a poor foundation, you just can’t get excited about the movie.

This could end up great, but it could cure cancer too. Same odds.

  7. George, you don’t always have to see the entire film to be able to pass some sort of judgment on it. Opinions on how stupid the concept, casting, etc of a film are, before it’s made are no more valid as an opinion of a completed film. They’re still just opinions. Do we need to see an entire completed film before deciding it has a stupid concept? Or can that be deduced from reading what the concept is?

As fans of the franchises involved, why should we wait until we see a trailer to voice objection at how this will be handled? Isn’t it better that the studio possibly find out fan objections before committing to a project?

This could end up being great. A JL film like most are proposing (with continuity based on other films), could end up being terrible. There’s always a lot of variable with any film. But at this point, all we’re discussing is what people want to see. And a lot of people think this is a bad idea.

  8. George, you presume that we have already condemned the movie for what we dont already know.

Quite the opposite. EVERYTHING they have said about the movie so far has been against what the fans want. We predict this movie will suck because of the jr versions of the roster. Its a “young Justice league”. And that there are already franchises with those characters that have been established and they are ignoring them.

This is not the only DC property that is going to ignore the rest of the DC universe.

No one is claiming to have seen a script since one has yet to be written. We are judging what little we already know about it and its all crap so far.

And Wonder Woman could totally be a good movie with a good writing team. There are DECADES of solid storyline that have kept her in the top 3 selling properties on DC’s library.

  9. I couldn’t give a shit about this film to be honest. If they make it fine if they don’t well thats fine too.

This is more about thie culture of script reviews and nonsense like that. People deciding a film is doomed before they have seen anything. At least wait until there is a trailer.

or how about you wait until they have finished a days worth of shooting before completely writing off a film.

Its ridiculous. I understand having reservations about things when news sounds bad but this film has been written off completely before they have shot a frame and I think its silly. thats all.

especially when a lot of negative buzz begins with a script review by some nobody website.

  10. Bale can’t be in JLA because besides from a few such as Green Arrow, the League’s members completely go against Nolan’s “realistic” vision.

And plus, Wonder Woman should never happen because her character, while popular, is not strong enough to carry a movie by herself. She’s just not interesting enough.

  11. i think George is just taking a breath from the (expected) panic mode that seems to automatically kick into high gear when news of these projects hits the news.
I was disapointed with Indy 4 and also felt something was missing from the latest Hulk. But that was a finished product. Nothing (underlined, BOLD, Italicicized!) has been written, sewn, stiched, hammered together, welded, or CGI’d on this “proposed” project. Lets take a breather and go read a book shall we? Ben Bova’s “Mars” maybe …..

  12. After all is said and done I’ll keep hope alive that they’ll see the success of BBegins and TDK and the ‘modest’ ($400+ Mill.) success of Singer’s SR and approach it carefully and craft damn good story everyone can be proud of. Thats all we are looking for when we take that magic ticket from the box office window. O.K., the popcorn better be fresh also!
Hey, Marvel doubling The Incredible Hulk’s take was quite sobering for Marvel. Even Marvel is infallible….

  13. Okay, I made a typo. I meant to say “I don’t see anything good coming from this”.

I believe this is a mistake. Yeah, there isn’t nothing to really back that statement up, but this just screams “AVP” to me (and I like AVP); becoming nothing more than a film to cash on the name and not care about the quality.

Yeah, it may be too early to tell, and maybe the movie will be good. But I recall the same being said when Silver Surfer and Galactus were announced for Fantastic Four 2, and look how that turned out.

  14. Darkkinger you haven’t seen anything good so far?? you have seen absolutely nothing so far. Nothing. Not a frame. Not a still. You haven’t seen the final costume designs, the final cast, sets, locations, a logo.

we have seen absolutely nothing but rumors and gossip.

  15. I am the one who said it is impossible to make a wonder woman movie. And it is becuase the whole idea of wonder woman sucks my balls, yeah I just red herringed all over her ass.

Obviously it would be really easy to prove me wrong on this by doing a good one, but in my opinion I dont see it being ever done well, and I have absolutely nothing off which to base that.

  16. John C, Who cares if it fits in. All the comic book storylines don’t connect up all the time. Different Artists make the characters look different so who cares who playing Batman or Superman when its in a group. There will always be the need for different actors to star in the roles. Christopher Reeve & Routh are not the only actors that can play superman. These franchises will outlive all the actors they always do.

  17. darren

i agree that a wonderwoman movie should be made but captain america is waaay more popular then wonder woman. not to mention hes the optimus prime of all marvel characters. not the same..not close…

but YES they should have a movie with her on it..i think they should NEVER make a jla film UNTIL (and i cant emphesize the word “until” enough) they make an individual wonderwoman movie

same thing for flash and the rest of the justice league characters

again: why isnt there a flash movie? it would make much more money then all the hulk movies combined..he can be more exiting then spiderman..and hes got a bunch of villains….
    damn you WB/DC

  18. Thank you Darren. People keep harping on about Happy Feet as if that is all Miller has ever done. The guy has a pretty eclectic range of films on his c.v. and responsible for Mad Max and Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) . Sure along time ago but the action in road warrior is still better than 95% of action we get today. Plus I like witches of eastwick as well. Babe pig in the city is a good film. Under rated. The set piece where the farmers wife is bouncing around that room is great. He still has visual flare. I really didn’t like Happy Feet but I was not the target audience on that film and I don’t disregard a guys entire career based on one animated kids film that I didn’t like.

Seriously how many of you here have actually read the script?? and how many of you are basing your fears on internet rumours and gossip? How many of you have sent eh audition tapes or costumes?? I haven’t but it seems all of you are there for every production meeting.

I hate this modern day script reviewing nonsense. Can you imagine reading the star wars script before the film came out? Things sit on the page differently to how they wind up on the screen. I would much rather see I dunno – maybe a frame of footage before I base my entire feeling on the film around the script rumours from some website that read a script a year or so ago.

Judge the film on the film itself not on rumours spread throughout the internet. people condemning the film before one piece of film has actually been shot. No one has actually seen even a still or one frame and apparently its the worst film ever made.

The continuity thing I agree is a bit silly but there are different continuity comics, you have cartoon series with different continuity. I know its entirely different to films and audiences might be confused but I think it can be done.

I wouldn’t worry about the routh/singer superman franchise because I think it is pretty obvious now that that series is dead and I think nolans batman is big enough now to not have to worry about this jla affecting it.

I am not saying it will definitely be great but I am not going to write it off before I have seen a single frame of film because some fucking random guy on the net read the script and hated it.

  19. And who says a “Wonder Woman” movie cannot be done? If Marvel can go forward with ‘Captain America” with a big ass A on his forehead cuz the “FANS” will love it, then don’t talk to me how a woman with a bronze eagle breastplate and long red boots is next to impossible.

JLA or no JLA, someday, somewhere, someone will take a crack at it and nail her. I mean, it.

  20. “First, why would you pick Happy Feet Miller to make Justice League?”

I *could be* wrong on this, but I think it had something to do with he wanted to do “Mad Max 4”, and WB backed him into a corner on this deal. But even if that wasn’t the case, simply picking out “Happy Feet” is a cheap shot, I’m tired of seeing it.
In fact, I’m tired of seeing John talk about it, and now Rodney.

George Miller is not a horrible director some of these folks on the internet are making him out to be. Sweet Jesus! JLA (the way it is planned and cast) is a bad idea since the Batman franchise is nothing short of magma hot, and the Supey franchise could pick up steam again at any time.

But folks, I’m sorry, Miller directed the Mad Max films (especially the action classic The Road Warrior), Witches of Eastwick, Lorenzo’s Oil and Babe. He is a seasoned director, an Oscar Winner he is not a lousy director, and I don’t give a damn how old he is. While I would love a Mad Max 4 over JLA (at least in this incarnation) as much as the next person, I’m NOT going to jump on this “let’s slam George Miller” garbage on the internet community sites. It’s a crock.

Could I also add something else here? Just a little Devils Advocate to follow:.

The *major* problems we can forsee on JLA has zero to do with how well the script may be written, how good (or even bad) the actors and crew may (or may not) be (although Common is suspect) I mean, it seems we are presuming a lot over this project. We may not like the way things are being done, but isn’t a bit much to rip into the talent before they prove themselves overall?

I have no problem with Ms. Gale. If she auditioned and got the part, she was good enough for it. That’s good enough for me.

Will JLA Mortal happen? I think in he long run the plug will be yanked from life support once more; but it has nothing to do with Miller directing or Ms. Gale possibly acting. In fact, forget all this, you have a director. You have an actress. Dust off Joss Whedon’s sp and give the masses a Wonder Woman film.

But if this goes on, I hope at least Batman (and related characters) are taken out of the script (but a re-imagined Nightwing outside of Nolan is okay) and anything related to Superman.

If they do that, then we should all shut up and let the filmmakers do their thing and then critique the final product.
That is what I am going to do, even if, in all probabilty, it will be a moot point.

  21. Thanks Rodney for the reminder, everyone’s pretty informed here which makes it always interesting.
Another question now comes to mind, with the multiple universes existing in the DC pantheon, will it be Earth I or Earth II????? As reported they have been pursuing a “younger” cast, which I initially don’t have a problem with IF, they take their time and put a respectful and not embarrasing folly out..I’m recalling Steve Martin’s bit in Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, “Your girlfriend hands ya some toast with shit on it but she paints it gold and expects you to eat it and say, Mmmmmm…honey, its delicious–Thanks!”
Whenever they put an early trailer in front of the Comic-Con audience will be the true litmus test! Hollywood is the capital of “IF”.

  22. god haven’t we had enough crappy batman movies? i thought we had moved on from the schumacher era of batman films that really blew nuts and now we were in the heavenly period of nolan’s batman … but wait … hold on … it sounds like we have a new dawning of really bad super hero movies with batman in it ……….. the justice league!!! hooray!! i hope this movie doesn’t get made!!

  23. @Supernetuser, Bale will not be in this. Some kid is playing a younger batman in this.

They are not taking this project seriously and it will not take place in the same world as any other DC film either.

  24. Tripp.. everyone who reads this site is already aware of the upcoming Avengers film next summer.

The point is thats NOT what they are doing with Justice League.

They have the Batman movies already, and Superman… and those are NOT the same batman and supes that will be in this justice league. Nor will the Teen Titans be connected in any way to any other franchise.

And any build up in anticipation of any movie has the potential to embarrass if it tanks.

  25. Marvel’s planning a live-action Avengers (“We’re putting together a team”, (Downey/Tony Stark to Gen. Ross), so it’s not an impossibility, Again, they need to approach it seriously otherwise we’ll end up with DC’s Fantastic Four and well, y’know…..do I really have to spell out what will transpire if they jack it up and just throw crap out? They’ll get laughed off by everyone (industry and fans alike) and will have no other franchise except Batman. They need to build on quality product!@ They’re call…..we wait….

  26. You can’t possibly be comparing a low budget straight to video animated movie aimed at kids with a proper big budget theatrical mo cap film (ala Beowulf) directed by George Miller? Are you?
For a while they were indeed thinking of going that route and I think they should stick to it.

  27. the animated stuff is good and doomsday was amazing but i really want the real thing

you know what? how long is it going to take to make the jla movie AFTER the individual flash, aquaman and greenlantern movies? 100 years? id rather not wait and watch this one even if bale or ruth arent in it….

i want to see it while im alive man

  28. And you figure that if they did ANOTHER animated Justice League it would be any different?

I liked the JLs and Doomsday, and the trailer for Wonder Woman animated dvd looks good too.

  29. “Gutpunch, they have a very successful line of animated direct to dvd features based on these franchises. ANOTHER animated Justice League is unnecessary”

The problem with those is that they are shit. Utter shit.

  30. yeah i totaly agree- i mean i would DIE to see a JLA film but with the same actors they used on the individual movies…

the green lantern and flash are such GREAT characters..so is aquaman. the character that is the most popular and known in the JL without counting superman and batman is flash.
what i mean by that is that non comic book readers know about him- such as soccer moms.

with that in mind…why not a flash movie? hes famous and hes wicked cool. sure, so is the green lantern and aquaman but flash is more…known? is that the word? popular i guess

people also know who aquaman is so i guess a movie about him wouldnt be bad. or wonderwoman.

i think they should just make a movie about them individualy first and THEN make the JLA film.

of course im no genious- im the 10000th person to make this observation….

  31. DrTheopolis…. Superboy was.

Go pick up a comic book sometime.

And Melbye…. I’d sooner see a 32 year old Wonder WOMAN than a 18yr old wonder girl. But still… with a little makeup she could pass for early 20s. They do it all the time.

  32. Awww hell, whats with the “Mill-arrr” fascination. How about Len Wiseman who has directed some legit action films (“Underworld I & II, last Die Hard flick…), then we’d be treated to his wife as Wonder Woman (Beckinsale!). Seems like the higher-ups are a tad mentally constipated with this ill-timed/ill planned project. I just don’t get it.
I believe that Bale has already stated that he would not dignify an ill-planned JLA film and with Man of Steel still up for grabs (I think…) its a real foggy landscape. I agree with John on this one, some DC execs MUST be Marvel fans.
Has there been any updates on the Singer/Routh/MOS status of late?????
I believe the current JLA books have a ‘serious’ storyline that could be cultivated with no problem. And how cool would it be to have a cross-over with the highly acclainmed JSA book????
There is a wealth of material it just has to be handled with care and a little intelligence!

  33. NO matter what any one here thinks, Warner Bros is most likely going to move foward and produce this movie any way. YES, there are things on paper that at first glance seem like they would be hard to translate into a feature film, but make no mistake, George Miller is NO hack director. He’s is a very solid talent as proven with MAD MAX and even BABE!

  34. Wonder woman cannot be made into a good film, it is impossible.
So just completely forget she ever existed then you can start thinking about justice league, Although I agree that marvel is doing better by establishing films for the main characters first , then bringing them together.

  35. A Justice League movie should never be made for theatrical release unless it is animated. Justice League would not translate well to live action. I cannot believe Warner Bros. executives would take such a huge risk here. Especially considering the success Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is enjoying at this point?? This will be a huge mistake for WB!

  36. This movie should in no way be made with Bale as Batman…I mean, I think they’re talking about rebooting Superman anyway, so Routh may not be in the picture anymore, but it needs to be the same character…

I totally agree with the statement that these idiots must be Marvel Fans…

    MARVEL is doing it RIGHT….

I feel like Napoleon Dynamite right now…IDIOTS!

  37. What if they got Bale and Routh to play as B-man and S-man respectively? Add to that they make it a dark and gritty take on the JLA world, like Nolan has? What you everyone think of it then? Picture them pulling off for JLA what they’ve done for the B-man series.

  38. First, why would you pick Happy Feet Miller to make Justice League?

Second, I dont think they MUST have Batman or Superman in a JL film, but they better make us care about the other characters if they are to carry the show. I am not a huge Avengers fan, but now that Iron Man has made it big, people are going to be a lot more excited about Avengers even though it doesnt have a Spider-Man or Wolverine in it. If Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and the Flash all had successful intros, seeing them team up (with some other newbies like the Atom or even Aquaman) could be cool. Hell, throw in Superman. His solo film series isnt worth keeping around anyways.

  39. Teen Titans would be awesome..they were actually and are better than Justice League. I agree with John they should do a Titans movie instead. Judas Contract and terror of trigon are two of the best graphic novels I have read. Guess what they are Teen Titans graphic novels.

If they’re going to do a teen titans film they have to have

    Robin (Justin Long)
    Cyborg (Columbus Short)
    Beast Boy (Shai La Bouf)
    Star Fire (Rachel Mc Adams)
    Raven (Christina Ricci)
    Wonder Girl (Megan Gale)
Kid Flash (The kid from smallville who played impulse)

  40. I don’t even read comic books and I know the order is Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, then the B-movie guys are Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman. It seems to be common knowledge everywhere except the WB offices. If they can’t handle individual movies yet, don’t pack them all into one.

  41. I agree, they need to set up a good film franchise for Superman (start from scratch and give Supes a reboot) and finally get a Wonder Woman film onto the screen.

If they get fantastic films for their top three stars, an ensemble film could be absolutely HUGE. And they could use it to introduce other top characters like Green Lantern, Flash etc, who could then launch into their own stand alone films.

They need to not jump the gun on this. A film like this outside of the continuity of strong franchises for the top characters will weaken the potential for a strong Justice League film down the road.
