Serenity 2

Serenity-2-PossibleFirefly was a show unappreciated by the stupid network it was on. It was cleaver, funny, exciting… everything you could want in a Sci Fi show along with some terrific characters. Sadly the show was pulled after only 12 episodes, but later appeared as ONE OF THE BEST SCI FI MOVIES IN THE LAST 10 YEARS! Serenity.

For various reasons, Serenity woefully BOMBED at the boxoffice (this is one of the big reasons I laugh when people complain that Hollywood doesn’t do anything original anymore…. when they DO put out something as brilliant as Serentiy, they don’t go support it). This pretty much sealed the fate of the Serenity/Firefly franchise and it has been understood that there would be no sequel.

But wait a second! Strong sales of the Serenity special DVD have some folks at the studio thinking that a Serenity 2 might be a good idea! The folks at Moviehole give us this:

Tudyk says the newly-released “Serenity : Special Edition“ DVD has been selling so hot, that there’s talk in doing another movie. “They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie”. Tudyk agrees that even if it was a direct-to-DVD movie, it’d still be worthwhile. Especially since the whole DVD sequel is a big trend. “It really is”, says Tudyk. “Everybody in the Firefly crew – and that includes the ones who died in the movie – are excited about the prospect of doing another”. Nathan Fillion, says Tudyk, is especially keen.

Now this would kick huge amounts of ass. Mark me down as being impressed if the studio actually decides to go ahead and fund something like this. The only question (and the most important one) is if Joss Whedon would agree to do another one. That man has had his heart broken over this franchise so many times… the last interview I saw with him was really heart wrenching, he was so crushed by the failure of the movie… I’m not sure he’ll go back to it. Let’s hope he does.

  1. I really love this franchise ,& although two of the charters were killed off I’d like to see a series picked up where the movied left off. With all that’s happen in the show & movie. It’s set up for a new show. Not Firefly ,Or Serenity. But something that will move to the next chapter of & already Excellent story. ,But that just my opinon

  2. I recently got addicted to this series. Having only 14 shows and a movie doesnt give this brilliant storyline justice. The actors are top notch and easy to get attached to. One can only hope they bring out more epidsodes.

  3. i say u they should make a new movie the tv show was great and the movie was better in the first movie they set up a few ways to go with a new one and there is a lot of ppl out there that would love to see it so y not just do it

  4. I am ashamed to say that I did not watch the series when it was on tv, but recently became addicted. I thought it was one of the most original futuristic series, with a surprising sense of reality. I thought the movie did a good job of answering some questions, but leaving it open for future installments.

I would really like to see a sequel, but i think a story line like this one needs a full series, or miniseries at least.

  5. Forget a sequel to serenity. The movie was entertaining but it lacked the passion of the series. What we need is for the Sci-fi channel to approach Whedon about continuing the series. With so many of Sci-fi’s shows ending now is the perfect time to save the channel and the series.
    Long live Firefly

  6. I dunno, I’m not that excited about another Serenity movie .. would much rather have the series back.

I really enjoyed the actual series but didn’t like the movie much at all. The movie was just a stone skipping across the pond that is the story, it barely breathed any life into the characters.

  7. I can point out when someone’s opinion is incorrect because that is MY opinion.

Anyways, if you’re pumped, get pumped, whatever.

I think I was just actually looking forward to that movie and was just let down in monumental fashion. (Not as badly as Deathproof – which was actually an abortion that you could pay $10 to see.)

So ignore, applaud me, correct my grammar (although I speak the queen’s English so whatever).

    I don’t give a fuck.

    Have a nice day!

  8. Right now…right now…I want a show of hands…

How many times have we seen direct to video/DVD films that carry on a franchise name, in whole or it part and there’s an audio commentary or news brief connected to such a production and the quote goes something like this:

We are doing this for the (loyal) fans

If Universal Home Vid can pump on a gazillion Bring It Ons a half dozen American Pie presents , an upcoming prequel to Smokin’ Aces, among others….

Then if there is a fan demand, the browncoats can be ressurected once again.
Besides, Nathan Fillion needs some work…

  9. It bombed because it had the worst marketing campaign I can remember. One crappy 15 second teaser that turned off everyone I talked to. I had to drag people to watch Serenity, all of whom had never seen Firefly, and they all loved it. Even the passive aggressive a-hole who would hate it just to spite me was raving about it.

  10. Serenity was ok, I personally don’t see what big deal is though.

“ONE OF THE BEST SCI FI MOVIES IN THE LAST 10 YEARS!”, not a very good last ten years for sci-fi, I guess.

  11. Yep Paul you blew your case when you started denigrating other people’s opinion. Best SF movie of last few years – and helluva of lot better than the shitfest prequels. Talk about thin.

  12. Please, and the dead characters can come back to life any way they want in the movie, and I will not complain one bit. They could be zombies, for all I care. Please!

  13. Serenity was an awesome movie but I’m skeptical considering the deaths of some of the characters. IMO, they can’t replaced and I don’t know if it would be the same without them. I guess if anything comes of Serenity 2 then I’ll have my guarded optimism but if it stands alone then I’ll have no complaints

FYI, Calvin, ‘irregardless” isn’t a proper word and shouldn’t be used in counter-arguements.

  14. Oh, and Paul:
As we all know, movies are subjective. It’s not that your opinion isn’t valid, but maybe if you could express it without the insults, it wouldn’t seem like adolescent ignorance. First, Down syndrome is not spelled, “Down’s syndrome” except in British English. I can actually tell from your website that you’re from the NY area, so try not to add the ‘s. But irregardless of spelling (that was just an FYI, no insult intended), claiming someone has Down syndrome because they like a movie is a pretty immature, and for someone who is 24, you should be held to higher standards than preteens. I have no problem that you don’t like the movie, just try to be more of an adult when you express your opinion.

  15. Serenity 2 is a terrible idea for one important reason. Serenity was bottom of the barrel, fan service trash.

That movie, for anyone without down’s syndrome, had one of the thinest plots (you didn’t know the federation/empire/whatever rip off it was called created those monsters?) and the characters were nice, even charming but they weren’t that great.

I never watched the show and just caught the movie and I’ve come to realize that this movie, along with a plethora of others, are liked by those who want to go against the grain.

It bombed because a majority of those who are not down with the syndrome realized it was trash.

I don’t think they will make another but if they do, I bet it’ll be better because it can’t be any worse.

  16. Ok I dont know if anyone knows this. But some elements of Fire Fly were taken from a popular Anime series called OutLaw Star. For Instance the young women in the suit case and the captain in a smuggler/bounty hunter kinda role. Also the captains gun looks like a realisic version of the gun from the anime too. But its been awhile since i seen Firefly or Outlaw Star but I do remeber a few similarites kept me from being a fan. Check it out for yourself.

  17. The show was popular and had a good fanbase, but Serenity didn’t have enough of the fanbase from Firefly to draw the numbers for the movie. It seems now, the fanbase is growing all the time. A second movie might just do well if the fan base keeps on growing like it is.

  18. I watched the show and enjoyed it. Years later some friends rented the movie and I stopped watching after about 10 minutes. Lost interest in the characters I guess and it seemed stupid from the first bit.
