This philosophy seems to be paying off. The most recent entry, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, recently shattered domestic opening weekend records by pulling in $360 million. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, surpassed the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame, marking a significant milestone for the character.
The Sony and Marvel Partnership
The ongoing collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios remains a picture-by-picture arrangement. Because of this unique deal structure, there are no automatic greenlights for future sequels. Each new chapter requires fresh negotiations between the two studios, a process that Pascal and Marvel executive Kevin Feige have navigated since their partnership began in 2015.
Regarding the potential for a sequel, Pascal expressed a strong desire to bring Cretton back into the fold. She noted that if the studios have their way, the director would certainly be involved in the next chapter of the series. The lack of a formal plan is not necessarily a negative sign for the franchise.
