Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was originally attached to helm the massive crossover event. In a recent interview, he admitted that the combination of industry strikes and the sudden shift in creative direction left him feeling uncertain about his future with the studio.

The director noted that he felt a sense of sadness when the project fell through.
