HBO has officially announced Jay-Z in 8, an upcoming eight-part documentary series set to debut this fall. The project features the iconic rapper sitting down for an in-depth conversation with legendary producer Rick Rubin.
Rubin is directing the series and will interview the artist about his life, music, lyrics, and creative process. The two share a long-standing professional relationship, most notably dating back to Rubin producing the track 99 Problems for the 2003 album The Black Album. The series is a Tetragrammaton production and will be executive produced by Shawn Carter, Daniel Kaluuya, and Rubin.
A Look at the Creative Process
The announcement of the documentary arrives during a significant year for the artist as he celebrates major milestones in his discography. He has been organizing global activations and concerts to honor the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. These celebrations include a series of high-profile performances, such as his recent headlining set at the Roots Picnic and upcoming shows at Yankee Stadium and in cities like Paris and Los Angeles.
By pairing the rapper with a producer as influential as Rubin, the series promises a deep dive into the artistry behind some of hip-hop’s most enduring records. For fans, this project offers a rare, structured look at the evolution of his career, moving beyond the concert stage to focus on the personal and professional experiences that shaped his legacy.
