Zack Snyder to Direct Escape From New York Reimagining

Escape from New York is getting a fresh take as Zack Snyder steps in to write and direct the reimagining. The project, confirmed by StudioCanal at CinemaCon, will see Snyder team up with his wife Deborah Snyder and producer Wesley Coller under the Stone Quarry banner, while original creator John Carpenter serves as executive producer.

Production Details

StudioCanal retains the rights to the property alongside Carpenter, and The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce through their overall deal with the studio. The film is slated for a theatrical release, though plot specifics remain under wraps.

Legacy of the Original

Released in July 1981, the original Escape from New York introduced audiences to the eyepatch‑wearing antihero Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell. The film earned over $50 million worldwide on a $6 million budget and spawned the sequel Escape from L.A. in 1996. Over the decades, several directors—including Joel Silver, Robert Rodriguez, Radio Silence, and Leigh Whannell—have floated remake ideas, but Snyder’s involvement marks the first confirmed reimagining.

Snyder’s Current Work

While the new project moves forward, Snyder is also in post‑production on the drama The Last Photograph, a story about an ex‑DEA operative turned war photographer searching for missing children in South America. The film reunites him with actors Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, who appeared in his Netflix sci‑fi epics Rebel Moon.
