In August last year Lucasfilm announced that it would end the Star Wars series The Acolyte after one season. The decision shocked fans because the show was the first to explore the High Republic era, a time set centuries before the original movies. The cancellation also sparked a lively debate about the show’s story choices and its viewership numbers.
At the same time the series left a tantalizing clue about Darth Plagueis, the mysterious Sith lord who later mentors Palpatine. In the final episode viewers catch a glimpse of Plagueis in a dim cave on the planet Bal’demnic where Manny Jacinto’s character Qimir and Amandla Stenberg’s character Osha wander.
According to Star Wars lore Plagueis eventually trains a young Sheev Palpatine, who becomes Darth Sidious and later kills his master. The Acolyte finale therefore raised many questions about how Plagueis fits into the larger mythos and what his relationship to Qimir might be.
Lesley Headland, the creator, director, executive producer and showrunner of The Acolyte, shared new details in a recent interview. She explained that the early design of Qimir’s helmet hinted at a link to the Knights of Ren, the dark warriors first seen in The Force Awakens. Headland said the design “foreshadowed a possible connection to the Knights of Ren with the Kylo Ren shape we landed on.”
She added that the team was already planning to introduce Darth Plagueis in the series. This move would set up the classic Rule of Two, a Sith principle that limits the order to a master and an apprentice. Headland suggested that the mysterious Stranger character could become the first Knight of Ren, forming a Sith‑adjacent cult that survives long after the events of The Acolyte.
Design Details and Musical Cue
Composer Michael Abels reinforced the connection by weaving a subtle cue from Kylo Ren’s theme into the series score. The upcoming book The Art of The Acolyte, due January 13, will showcase production art, character designs, vehicle concepts, planetary sketches and storyboards that illustrate this hidden link.
The art book will give fans a closer look at how the creative team built the bridge between the High Republic and the later era of The Force Awakens. It also confirms that the early Knights of Ren concept was intentional, not a retroactive addition.
Overall the interview reveals that The Acolyte was meant to expand the Star Wars timeline in a meaningful way. By tying Qimir to the Knights of Ren and planning a Darth Plagueis appearance, the series aimed to enrich the Sith legacy and set up future stories.
Fans can now anticipate that the next official Star Wars releases may reference these ideas, even though The Acolyte itself will not return for a second season. The Art of The Acolyte book offers the best chance to explore the show’s hidden connections and enjoy the visual creativity behind the series.
