Hanna Bergholm’s Nightborn Arrives on Shudder

Director Hanna Bergholm is back with a new vision of horror. Following the success of her debut feature Hatching, the filmmaker brings her latest project, Nightborn, to Shudder. The film, which explores the darker side of motherhood, is available to stream on the platform starting tomorrow.

Nightborn follows Saga, played by Seidi Haarla, and her husband Jon, portrayed by Rupert Grint. The couple moves to an isolated house deep in the Finnish forest, hoping to start a family. However, their dream quickly turns into a nightmare when Saga becomes convinced that something is profoundly wrong with their newborn son. As the couple struggles to navigate the isolation and the growing tension in their marriage, Saga must confront a terrifying truth that others refuse to acknowledge.

The film has already garnered significant attention on the festival circuit, taking home top honors at Fantasia, including Best Film and Best Actress. Critics have praised the movie for its unique blend of Finnish mythology and visceral horror, highlighting Bergholm’s ability to turn the anxieties of parenting into a gripping, darkly comic experience.

A New Vision of Maternal Horror

Bergholm’s previous work, Hatching, established her as a distinct voice in the genre, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated following. With Nightborn, she continues to explore complex themes through a lens of body horror and psychological tension. The film’s visual language and the central performance by Haarla are designed to keep audiences on edge, balancing sensitive emotional beats with moments of intense, gory horror.

The production features a screenplay co-written by Ilja Rautsi and Bergholm. The supporting cast includes Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey, John Thomson, and Silvia Saloranta. With a runtime of 92 minutes, the film promises a tight, focused experience that leans into the unsettling atmosphere of its remote setting.

Why Nightborn Matters

For fans of contemporary horror, the arrival of Nightborn on Shudder marks a significant release. Bergholm has proven she can deliver high-concept horror that resonates both critically and with genre audiences. By focusing on the primal fears associated with motherhood, the film taps into a rich vein of storytelling that feels both personal and terrifyingly universal. As Shudder continues to curate a collection of bold, international genre films, Nightborn stands out as a must-watch addition for those who appreciate a dark, fable-like approach to the genre.
