The BBC has officially pulled back the curtain on The Hairdresser Mysteries, a new crime drama series arriving on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this July. Along with the first-look images, the network confirmed a stacked ensemble cast joining lead star Sally Phillips.
Created by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Jim Cartwright, the series is set against an upbeat 1970s backdrop. Phillips stars as Lily Petal, a hairdresser who leaves the city behind to purchase a small village salon. She soon finds herself at the center of the community, using her unique intuition and empathy to solve local crimes.
The newly announced cast includes Charlotte Jordan as Lily’s analytical assistant Clary Coombs, and Ben Castle-Gibb as PC Adam Watson. Sunetra Sarker joins as the village gossip Wincey Evans, while Clive Rowe and Guy Henry round out the cast as a flamboyant charity shop manager and an eccentric antiques dealer, respectively. Wendi Peters is also set to appear as a guest star.
A Fresh Take on Village Mysteries
The premise positions the salon as the hub of village secrets, offering a nostalgic and character-driven approach to the crime genre. With Cartwright serving as lead writer and a team of directors including Paul Gibson, the production aims to blend lighthearted village life with the intrigue of a classic mystery. The series consists of six 45-minute episodes.
For fans of cozy mysteries, the show promises a distinct atmosphere that leans into its 1970s setting. The involvement of Mill Bay Media and a strong supporting cast suggests a series that balances humor with its investigative elements, making it a notable addition to the BBC summer lineup.
