Netflix Sets Up New ‘The Getaway’ Remake with Philip Barantini at the Helm

Netflix is reviving the gritty crime classic The Getaway with a fresh remake slated for the streaming service.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that director Philip Barantini, known for Netflix’s acclaimed mini‑series Adolescence, will helm the film from a script by Peter Craig, whose recent credits include The Town, The Batman and Bad Boys for Life.

What is The Getaway about?

Convict Doc McCoy is denied parole and teams up with his wife Carol to strike a deal with crooked Texan Jack Benyon. Benyon pulls strings for Doc in exchange for help on one last bank heist. The job succeeds, but Benyon’s men double‑cross the couple, forcing Doc and Carol to flee across Texas with the loot, pursued by law enforcement and rival criminals as they race toward the Mexican border.

Behind the new production

The Netflix version is being produced by Peter Craig and Bryan Unkeless through Night Owl Stories, with Andrew Mittman producing for 1.21. Barantini and Samantha Beddoe also produce for It’s All Made Up, while Kai Dolbashian (1.21) serves as executive producer alongside Rey Reyes and Gregory Cohen of Night Owl.

Legacy of previous versions

The story first hit the screen in 1972 under Sam Peckinpah, starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, whose on‑set romance became legendary. A 1994 remake directed by Roger Donaldson paired another real‑life couple, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Both versions added layers of redemption and style that the original novel, written by Jim Thompson in 1958, largely lacked.

Fans can look forward to Barantini’s signature kinetic direction and Craig’s sharp crime‑writing sensibility as Netflix aims to bring the classic tale to a new generation.
