Spike Lee speaks on Red Hook Summer

Spike Lee made quite the impression with mainstream america when he released his love letter of a film about Brooklyn called “Do the Right Thing”, and that impression has ignited interest in his upcoming film “Red Hook Summer” as it’s been announced that Mr. Lee himself will reprise his role as “Mookie”. Most assumed that this marked a connection between the films and some even considered that this new film may be a sequel, and Mr. Lee has finally taken to the internet to offer clarification on the matter including the cast.

BlackFilm has managed to uncover some casting information on the project; the lineup includes Clarke Peters, Nate Parker, Turron Kofi Alleyne, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms, and Kalon Jackson. Peters, who played Lester Freamon on The Wire, has already been mentioned as a member of the lineup…
Speaking of that 1989 picture, Lee also took to Twitter in order to establish some things about his next project. As he put it in 139 characters:
“Red Hook Summer is not a Sequel to Do The Right Thing and it has nothing to do with Brooklyn Loves MJ.Subject Matter?New Spike Lee Joint YO”

I’m not surprised that it’s not a sequel and I do not expect that Mookie will not be a main character and may just appear in the film with a cameo or two. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the film had the same tone and possibly a similar message as his 1989 joint but with a new fresh approach for todays’ audience. Either way, I’m actually really looking forward to him making another film about Brooklyn and will hold this high on my radar until its release.

Either way, thank you for the clarification Mr. Lee

  1. I’m so glad its not a sequel but with so much time passing it would come off as an excuse to milk more money out of it. However I do like the idea of his Mookie character having some role in it if for no other reason that possible “what happened to him moment” (doesn’t have to be anything big, just a quick conversation or something).

  2. I’m in it for the long haul. He’s an arrogant racist bastard…but he’s an artist like no other. Like Polanski, I separate the man from the artist. I have full confidence that this will be a great film.
