Tim Burton and Johny Depp on Sweeney Todd

Burton-Depp-Sweeny-ToddI swear Tim Burton and Johnny Depp would get separation anxiety if the two weren’t in the same room together for more than 5 minutes. Word is now out that the two are going to be working together… again. The good folks over at AICN gives us this:

Burton will be directing this cry-baby crooner, Johnny Depp, to a new killer musical. The film is being set up for a 2007 Holiday release. No word if Danny Elfman is going to be adapting Sondheim’s musical with Burton – or if they’ll just use Stephen. I have to say – I can’t imagine Burton doing a non-Elfman involved musical… but, SWEENEY TODD is such an exquisite musical as is… it’s hard to imagine any radical reworking.

I’m not a Burton fan. I loved his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rendition… but other than that he doesn’t impress me. (Yes yes I know… All the “cool” film geeks say they love Tim Burton and that I’m out of touch if I don’t. I can live with that).

  2. with raimi he said that that the sam raimi today is not the same guy pre spider-man and he would rather never work again than have to have anything to do with the guy….or something to that effect..it was pretty harsh…he said raimi and his guys have all totally chaged…

then he came out and said similar things about burton….

my guess is maybe burton and raimi started trying to push him to deliver new stuff….elfman is pretty repetitive….and maybe he didn;t like being told what to do..

fuck I don;t know i am totally guessing but he is certainly falling out with people he has along history with….

  3. elfman and burton have a had a huge falling out. So has raimi and elfman……so he aint doing spider-man anymore….

but yeah…burton and elfman won’t be working together anymore

You know, I never thought of it that way but you’re absolutely right. He’d be far better suited to one of those positions. I won’t deny he has a striking visual style, but I’m not a huge fan of his work either. Maybe he really SHOULD stick to a design role and leave the directing to those better qualified.

  5. Loved Charlie &… and Nightmare Before Christmas, oh, and Beetlejuice. The rest is rubbish. Especially disappointed with Corpse Bride which was nothing but a half-arsed rehash of Nightmare with all of the fun bits taken out. Burton should be an art director or set designer or something.

  6. **likes Johnny Depp and Tim Burton**

i thought Chcolate factory was their weakest one. Edward Scissorhands was way better and so was Corpse Bride and the Nightmare before christmas. i liked ED Wood too.

most likely ill enjoy this movie to.

  7. i like burton’s animation movies.. but..(please dun throw any eggs my way) i didn’t like chocolate factory.. almost boring in a way. i was expecting to love it, since i’m about 5 mentally, but.. no. that oompa loompa was quite *disgusting* in a way, the body, the face, ugh. no i didn’t think it was artistic. the sets, yes, but oompa loompa turned me off. and this burton-depp colaboration is getting OLD, and i dun like old things.

  8. He’s a bit hit and miss, but I do love me some Tim Burton, especially when he’s working with Johnny Depp. It’s one of those great movie partnerships like Scorsese and DeNiro that almost always produces something worth watching.

  9. I wouldn’t call myself a huge Burton fan either, John. I liked “Nightmare Before Christmas” and thought “Corpse Bride” was decent, but other than “Chocolate Factory,” I didn’t LOVE anything of his. I think that the combination of his weird filmmaking style and Sondheim’s music are a good fit, though, and hope Burton doesn’t abandon the “Sweeny Todd” musical standards.
