David Goyer Taking On Thor

Post Submitted by: Varun

About a year ago in an interview with Comics Continium David Goyer (Writer of Batman Begins) was asked “Is it true you’re also going to tackle Thor?” and responded ” No. I don’t have time right now. There’s no way. ”

The very blunt answered has turned about face as Marvel’s J. Michael Straczynski announced that Goyer was writing a treament for the Thor script which was previously attached to “Posiedon”‘s Mark Protosevich, according to Dark Horizons. No word yet on how much of Protosevich’s script Goyer will be borrowing from.

This actually takes us all the way back to a post here on The Movie Blog in December of 2004 where we frist talked about Goyer doing the script. You can read that original article here.

I am excited about Goyer who has shown his strength with Batman Begins and did a mediocre job with the Blade Trilogy. He is also writing the screenplay for Captain America and The Flash. (via)

  1. Goyer, and any Goyer, can only bring just another same poor level story or script movie with, Marvel character, don’t misunderstand me i’ll dont’t have nothing against him,but to bring characters like Thor on the big screen, then you must have read more as 17.000 Marvel comic books,i’ll write at the moment one call,The Mighty Thor in, Keeper of The Seven Keys,a cosmic story, not one of those compact Marvel movies, where we seen untill now, thank you George

  2. I don’t mean to keep pulling your chain, Mr Nagy, because you’re my second favourite Canadian (after Neve Campbell, obviously), but I was mulling this over while the site was down: David Goyer is a big Triple H fan. In fact, I’m sure I read that he wrote extra scenes for him in Blade 3. If Goyer is more than just a screenwriter for the film (director or producer, maybe), that’s got to give Hunter a good chance at the lead role.

Also – and I haven’t seen any wrestling in a few years, so I’m
not sure – wasn’t Triple H’s favourite weapon the sledgehammer? The guy has hammer-wielding experience! How many people up for the part
are going to be able to say that?

Can’t you see it now? The climactic scene of the film: Thor is down
and out, Loki is about to triumph – but wait! Thor is up! He’s got
Loki’s head jammed between his humongous horse thighs! Oh my God!
Thor just pedigreed Loki right through the Spanish announcer’s
table!! It’s a slobberknocker in Asgard!!!

Anyways, glad to have you all back. While the site was down, I actually had to do some work for a while. It was horrible. Greetings from England!

  3. Inconsistent

Dark City was alot more than good, especially if you say batman begins was marvelous. Dark City is WAY ABOVE Batman Begins on all levels and if you think otherwise you are a fanboy masquereding as a movie lover….just saying….I stand up for Dark City…Ebert put it best when he said it was a modern day Metropolis and it captures the essence of the questions of What is Human? What Is Reality? in ways the Matrix could only dream of.

  4. Goyer is incontant as a writer just look to his work.

Puppet Master – piece of shit
The Crow II – another piece of shit
    Dark City – good
    Blade – mediocre
Zig Zag – piece of crap
    Blade2 – mediocre
Blade trinity – you all know how bad it is
    Batman Begins – marvelous

So if history can tell anything is that a good movie of Goyer is proceded by a real bad one. I don’t expect anything from him.
It can be a good movie or a real bad one.

  5. how the fuck can you blame Wesley Snipes for the downfall of the blade series?. he was barely in the last one! the first 20 min were a blade flick (which we all now know was a bit cut from Blade II script)…until “buffy” & “xander” showed up. then it was another filum totally with Blade making a cameo every so often. it’s all on Goyer’s head. he even resorted to casting dumbass wrestlers who cant act for the thing. his head is too far up his own ass congratulating (& interviewing) himself over shit movies he “directs”. & for the record i agree, the dude needs a filter.

  6. Goyer is a talented writer, no doubt about it… But he needs a smarter dirctor to filter through. This is evidenced by the fact that he ruined Blade: Trinity. Both Norrington and Deltoro cut a ton from his scripts. Now i know this is nothing new to have a big
difference between script and screen but my point concerns Blade: Trinity. Here…
Dark City: goyer writes. Proyas directs – Great movie
Blade 1: Goyer writes. Norrington directs – Great movie
Blade 2: Goyer writes. Deltoro directs – Great movie
Batman Begins: Goyer writes. Nolan directs – Great movie
    – Blade: Trinity – Goyer writes and directs – Horrible movie –
Goyer writes good stuff but he needs a talented director to show him that something that may look good on the page doesnt always translate well to the screen.

  7. Screw Thor with his own Mighty Hammer. Goyer’s alright sometimes, but he’s not horrid. Give some credit to the downfall of ‘Blade’ to Wesley Snipes…but yes, there was one aspect of “Trinity” which I felt just missed the mark. At one point in the film, Danika (Posey) threatens to turn King (Renyolds) back into a vampire. This threat is never carried out.

It should have been: a King/Blade rivalry was built up. Can King be ‘cured’ in time? What about other ‘vampires’? Can they be brought back to humanity as well?

I sort of like the Blade series thus far; but I’m only watching it now because Jill Wagner is smoking hot and I wanna buy her coffee.

BTW, I think Johnson will be better on Ghost Rider. As for Daredevil, there are some things I liked in the DC but it wasn’t Coolio.

  8. yeah i know johnson did DD,but as i stated above i’m willing to give 2nd chances. he tried to fix scaredevil with that director’s cut. sadly to no avail. it’s hard to come back from the dead after you have put ben asslick in red leather & miscast jennifer manchin as elektra. from a skeptic’s POV, that makes the combo of him & davey a double whammy to me. c’mon, how can goyer not resist putting in his 3 cents worth..

  9. Dre…dont worry he didnt write Ghost Rider…..he is a producer…..
Mark Steven Johnson wrote GR (he also wrote Simon Birch, Grumpy Old Men, Jack Frost, Big Bully). Which is better than Goyer according to you write? WRONG….Johnson wrote and DIRECTED THE peice of crap that is Daredevil. Good thing he will bring that same great filmmaking talent to Ghostrider as the writer and director of that film…

  10. why do they keep paying this guy ridiculous amounts on money when it is so obviously clear that the guy does not know how to come up with the “money shot” as far as writing an entertaining/decent ending to these comic-based screenplays?! he should have been stopped after the bad job done on Blade II. Even Del Toro couldn’t fix that aspect of the movie. i believe in 2nd chances, otherwise his career shoulda been stopped after the piece of crap Crow:The City Of Angels.
they gave the guy Blade:Trinity to direct nevertheless & it stopped being a Blade movie adter the first 20 min. i’m not even go onto how bad the endings (both the theatrical & dvd)were on that train wreck.
could the Blade film series have been dealt a fatal blow cos Goyer got distracted halfway through filming by fucking up another great screenplay in Batman Begins?! that movie was good until the convoluted last 20 minutes (seeing a pattern here are we?)what happened to Chris Nolan & Davey’s “keep it believable” mantra?!. twas an ending the felt it came right out of Batman & Robin. leave it to him to come up with the Rachael character btw. dude must have thought he had a chance with Holmes until she ended up in a scientologist’s arms. anyway back to Trinity: the guy botched both versions of the movie yet had the gall to interview himself in the press kit for it. HA! loser!
now i’m scared to watch Ghost Rider because i’m worried he’ll botch another great character’s flick.
now they give him the god of thunder to pen! damn! at least hire someone competent to rewrite the ending once dave has turned in his screenplay.

  11. I agree with AJ

There are some great writers out there and since we know Goyer can do bad (Blade 3) is it really a great idea to get him to do everything?

    nord

  12. I think Thor the movie would work best if they stayed in Asgard all the time. Make a 150M budget fantasy adventure out of it with giant Fenris Wolf, Hela, Loki, Odin, Surtur etc. That’s the way to do it. At least with the Marvel 616-universe Thor. It might work on Earth if they used something like the Thor from the Ultimates.

Granted, Goyer is talented (Blade 3 was beyond horrible though), but is he an expert in all Marvel characters? There are some other good writers out there.

  13. In my opinion Goyer is a great writer. I love all three Blades and Batman Begins is one of the best movies i have seen. But It seems like he writes very dark stuff, so that he is attache to this and The Flash is actually a surprise

  14. Don’t they just go to Goyer for any comic adaptation? He’s had a hand in Batman, Blade, Ghost Rider, The Flash, not to mention the glory that is David Hasselhoff: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Are there others? What other comics has this man been involved with?

As a side note, wouldn’t it be great if Doug got his wish and they set the entire film in Asgard, where Thor spends almost the whole running time locked in a brutal, hammer-smashing, blood and snot fight to the death with Loki and legion of other Norse Gods – and then they cast Triple H to play Thor?
