Al-Qaeda wanted to kidnap Russell Crowe?

So I was reading through todays edition of the Globe and Mail (one of Canada’s national newspapers) and came across one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read in a while.

According to Russell Crowe, the terrorist group Al-Qaeda had a plan to kidnap him. Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably asking yourself right now: “Why the hell would they want to kidnap Crowe?!?” Well, here’s what was reported:

Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terror network wanted to kidnap Russell Crowe as part of a “cultural destabilization plot,” the Oscar-winning actor is quoted as saying in an Australian magazine.

In an interview published in the March edition of Australia’s GQ Magazine, Crowe said FBI agents told him of the threat in 2001, in the months before he won a best actor Oscar for his role as Maximus in Gladiator.

“That was the first [time] I’d ever heard the phrase al-Qaeda,” Crowe said. “It was about — and here’s another little touch of irony — taking iconographic Americans out of the picture as sort of a cultural destabilization plot,” he added.

Look, I’m a BIG fan of Crowe when it comes to him as an artist… but there has been so much crap coming out of this guy’s mouth lately that I just don’t know what to think. I’m sorry… but kidnaping Crowe isn’t going to destabilize the US or Canada one single bit.

Maybe Al-Qaeda is just getting bored of being held up in their hiding caves and they thought Crowe would bring his band with him to jam out some tunes that they could all rock to?

  1. Al Qaeda probably did target celebrities for kidnapping, Russell Crowe included, as clueless as these murderous fanatics are. If these sociopaths really want to prevent their people from being tainted by western values, they would have to prevent them from accessing the internet, movies and all other forms of communication between the cultures – that’s about what it would take to stop the culture that a good part of the world is apparently attracted to.

Give up, fellas, the world’s changed in 1300 years. How ya gonna keep ’em down in the Madrassa after they’ve seen yahoo!?

  2. I know we’re supposed to not mind what an actor says or his/her personal life, but the fact is, the more Crowe opens his mouth, the less I’m liking him. And his meddling in the creative process of his film that was eventually cancelled (probably because of him) is also not good.

The fact is, if I was a producer, I don’t think right now I’d want to work with him. Why? He badmouths other famous actors (which could jeopardize my chances for working with other actors he has badmouthed). He says stupid, arrogant things that probably turn off most Joe and Jane AverageCineplexgoer. That’s my audience right there I have to sell my movie to.

If Crowe is so annoyed by this business and the fame, he should just retire and rock out with his band. Stop wasting everybody’s time.

  3. I can’t say I totally believe this quote given by him. What the hell do we care if he was targeted by Al Qaeda? SO friggin what?? There have been oil workers and journalists of all nations killed by terrorists – Al Qaeda or not – what more relevance does a celeb have over them? None!

If he really said this in an interview (No offense to you John who is reporting on the article)does it honestly matter? No.

Shut up Russel Crowe. Why don’t you actually think before you speak.

I’d like to see the look on Russell Crowe’s face when he was saying this, it must have been classic! *giggles* I like the man, I really do.

  5. Honestly, would most Americans give a rat’s ass if celebrities were kidnapped and beheaded by al Qaeda? As harsh as this sounds, most would applaud it, and the ranks of the murdered celebs would become quickly filled by other aspirants.

Actually, this sounds like it would be a good premise for a vicious satiric movie.

  6. Go figure…

All this AND he says his band is pretty good. I’m starting to doubt everything he says.

Maybe someone could take him away. Not to hurt him, of course. Just to kind of keep his mouth shut for a while…

But you didn’t hear it from me…

  7. That’s exactly the point Rich, it was the FBI who tipped him and it was not him “thinking” that he was going to be kidnapped, big difference.

  8. From the sounds of the story there were a number of high profile Movie Stars being targetted.

However, I’m not so sceptical about Crowe’s claims, more the FBI’s saying that there was a threat.

  9. From the report, he was the one informed by the FBI so it wasnt as if he was being “delusional” about it or doing a John Nash characterisation in his real life.

I think we have to get the FBI’s side on this report? LOL

Bombadil, that makes more sense, nowadays especially in the movies, everybody seems to look like an American! No pun intended to all Americans in this board.
