I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of the Weekend at Bernie’s movies. I found the gag of making a dead guy look alive for that long was just not funny after the first 10 minutes of his afterlife. When they brought out a sequel they had to use Voodoo to get Bernie’s body back, for whatever reason. I don’t think I even watched that one. So imagine my excitement when they said they were going to remake Weekend at Bernie’s?

Yep, it was bound to happen – though, I personally thought it wouldn’t happen until after they remade “The Godfather”, “Grease” and “Ghostbusters” – a remake of that late 80s classic (!) “Weekend at Bernie’s”.
Who can forget that little beautie? Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman as two schmucks who head up to their boss’s beach pad for the weekend only to find him dead – and then decide to convince everyone that he in fact is just a little inebriated. (As both actors were when they signed up for the film). It was like cheap crack… so bad, yet ya kept drawing it in.
Anyway, “Next Weekend at Bernies” is being produced by Ashok Amritraj – currently working on the new “Street Fighter” movie – and Jon Jashni (“Where the Wild Things Are”) for Hyde Park and MGM. From the sounds of it, its essentially the same storyline – except this time Bernie invites the two guys up to his ‘Ski Lodge’ – so expect plenty of ‘dead body’ goes skiing, jokes – instead of the Beach House.
I dont know what is more upsetting. The fact that they are making this movie, or that they have to wait for the producer to finish making another STREETFIGHTER MOVIE first?
I can just see Amritraj’s resume now. Filled with a list of sequels and remakes of movies no one cared about doing. Digging deep in the studio dumpsters there huh?
So this remake is being called NEXT Weekend at Bernie’s but its basically the first movie all over again. I don’t get the “next” part. Actually I don’t get any of it. I don’t know why they are making this.
I want to puke. That’s not witty statement. I really mean I physically want to throw up. This idea is so bad.
Will this be straight to DVD? I always enjoy the original when I catch it on TV on a Saturday afternoon, but there is absolutely no reason on earth to remake it. And I agree with Rodney – the thing that caught my attention was Street Fighter movie first?! Why? Does every single movie ever filmed have to get remade?
This sounds so desparate. There is absolutely no reason to remake this movie. If I want to see Weekend at Bernies, Ill rent it. This is by the way, one of my favorite comedies, I know its silly and there isnt much there besides the “what kind of funny situations can we stick a dead guy in” but I belly laugh every time I watch it.
Indeed. Bernies was funny in its day. Some of the laughs are still there.
But…come on. It also is what it is.

They don’t need to remake this. Amritraj should stick to producing those DTV action flicks he was connected to awhile back.
Like we needed any more proof that the movie industry is running dry of ideas.
