National Geographic Reveals Trailer for Epic Lion Docuseries

National Geographic has unveiled the official trailer for Lion, an emotional, real-life drama that chronicles the remarkable four-year journey of a tiny lion cub named Kio as he becomes a king. The four-part event series is executive produced by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, with a score composed by Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and the team at Bleeding Fingers Music.

The series is set to debut on National Geographic on Aug. 19, beginning at 9/8c, with all episodes available to stream the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. Narrated by O.J. Lynch, the production offers a unique look at the Maasai Mara’s lion kings and queens through the eyes of a new hero.

A Cinematic Approach to Wildlife

What sets this project apart is its ambition to blend traditional wildlife documentary filmmaking with the narrative structure of a blockbuster drama. By combining Favreau’s storytelling experience with Gunton’s expertise in natural history, the series aims to deliver a gripping coming-of-age saga. The production was four years in the making, with the crew logging nearly 1,400 filming days across 52 shoots in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This marks the first time a natural history production has documented a lion’s complete journey from a vulnerable cub to a king.

The musical score plays a vital role in the series, featuring recordings captured in the Maasai Mara, including local singers and even actual lion roars. The soundtrack, which includes subtle nods to the music of The Lion King, will be released through Hollywood Records on Aug. 21.

Why This Matters for Nature Enthusiasts

For fans of high-stakes storytelling, this series represents a significant evolution in how nature documentaries are presented to modern audiences. By focusing on the individual journey of Kio, the production creates a personal connection that is often missing from broader wildlife studies. This emotional investment, paired with the high-end production values typically associated with feature films, makes it a notable entry in the genre that bridges the gap between educational content and pure entertainment.

In conjunction with the series release, Disney is continuing its Protect the Pride campaign. This initiative supports the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund and its mission to help double the number of lions in the wild by 2050. Since 2019, the campaign has invested more than $5 million in conservation projects across 26 countries.
