Alex Cox Returns with Final Film Dead Souls Opening in Los Angeles

Legendary filmmaker Alex Cox is set to debut what is being billed as his final feature film, Dead Souls. The project, which serves as a frontier fable of American greed, is scheduled to open in Los Angeles on July 22 at the Laemmle NoHo theater.

The film follows a mysterious drifter named Strindler who scours the American West in 1890, collecting the names of deceased Mexican laborers. As he wanders from saloons to ranches, his motives become increasingly suspicious, leading to a series of complications involving local outlaws and hot-headed cowherds. The story is a loose adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s 1842 novel of the same name, reconfigured by Cox into a political Western.

For fans of the director behind cult classics like Repo Man and Straight to Hell, this release marks a significant moment in his career. The film has already garnered attention for its blend of slapstick humor, political critique, and surreal genre elements, maintaining the uncompromising indie spirit that has defined Cox’s work for decades.

Special Q&A Event

To celebrate the opening, select members of the cast and crew, including Del Zamora and Dick Rude, will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A session on June 22. This event offers a unique opportunity for audiences to engage with the creative team behind this late-career effort.

The film also features a co-writing credit from spaghetti Western legend Gianni Garko. With an 88-minute runtime, Dead Souls promises to be a meditative yet sharp exploration of the American nightmare, where fortunes are built on blood and gold.
