Disney+ Scraps New Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Series

The long-gestating plans for a new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series have officially come to an end. Reports confirm that Disney+ has decided to scrap the live-action project, which had been in active development for the past year. This marks the second time in recent years that a major streaming platform has abandoned a high-profile attempt to reboot the iconic franchise, following a similar cancellation at Netflix.

The project was being spearheaded by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the executive producers and showrunners behind the successful series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Despite the creative pedigree involved, the decision to halt production was not based on the quality of the material. Instead, the cancellation stems from the challenging economics of producing a high-end superhero series when the streamer does not own the underlying intellectual property.

Why Did Disney+ Scrap the Series?

The primary hurdle for the production was the financial model. Mounting a live-action series of the scale required for the Power Rangers brand demands a significant investment. Because Hasbro retains ownership of the Power Rangers brand, the financial incentives for Disney+ to fund such a massive undertaking were deemed unfavorable. Without the ability to fully control the IP, the studio determined that the project was not a viable long-term investment.

This development is a frustrating turn for fans who have watched multiple iterations of a new Power Rangers universe fail to launch. While the brand remains a staple of pop culture, the difficulty in aligning creative vision with the complex business realities of modern streaming has proven to be a recurring obstacle for the franchise.

The Previous Netflix Attempt

Before the project moved to Disney+, Netflix spent two years attempting to build a comprehensive Power Rangers cinematic universe. That effort was overseen by Jonathan Entwistle, the creator of The End of the F***ing World. Entwistle had envisioned a sprawling, interconnected story that would have spanned both television and film, with a heavy focus on the character of Tommy Oliver.

Entwistle previously shared that his vision for the Netflix project involved a time-bending narrative centered on stopping the villain Drakkon. The series was intended to have a mystical, King Arthur-inspired tone, moving away from traditional adaptations to offer something fresh for the audience. Despite the development of unique concepts, such as sentient colors, the ambitious plan ultimately stalled, leaving the future of the franchise in a state of uncertainty.

While this latest setback is disappointing, the enduring popularity of the Power Rangers suggests that it is likely only a matter of time before another studio attempts to revitalize the property. For now, however, the search for a new home for the Rangers continues.
