Daredevil Is Born Again

Director David Slade has decided to give fanged folks a rest and has chosen to handle heroes with horns instead. Especially Daredevil. Better than that, reports are the focus will be on (or inspired by) the ‘Born Again’ storyline. That’s not all. Pay attention to the last part from The Hollywood Reporter:

David Slade is in talks to develop and direct the new Daredevil movie, being made by 20th Century Fox and Regency. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark of Chernin Entertainment are producing.

The so-far untitled project has no writer at this stage although the studio says it is aiming to make a movie that continues the story begun by the 2003 Ben Affleck movie. Affleck, however, is not involved in the new project.

If they are in fact going with a script that adapts or is influenced by Born Again, I could see why Fox would change the tune after so many years (remember: there was reboot talks once upon a time) but NOW this poses an excellent question. With the exception of Affleck, who else could reprise their parts from the 2003 film? Would they seek out Ellen Pompeo who is a bigger name now than she was then (mostly due to Grey’s Anatomy) -as she played Karen Page?

Can Micheal Clarke Duncan return as Fisk? Does anyone want him back? (I’m for it,BTW) Could Joe Pantoliano return as reporter Ben Urich? Maybe. It would be really nice if something like this happened.

Now, here’s another question. Pure speculation on my part and it is probably a poof of smoke, but here goes. This is ONLY a hypothetical situation. For those familiar with the storyline, there is a villain called ‘Nuke’ that features in the plot of Born Again. Captain America has a cameo. The chances of these characters being in a script are unlikely- however, again, this is a “what if” pipe dream…could the new film merge its way into the Marvel Movie Universe? If and for the third time IF that happened Slade and co. could do pretty much a direct adaptation of Born Again.

Do I think it wll happen like that? No. But I don’t think anyone would complain if it did…

  1. The 2003 Dare Devil was terrible, guys. I’m talking Rise of the Silver Surfer terrible. I’m really surprised to hear so much love from all of you for a film that crappy. Such a shoddy framework will not be able to support a franchise. They need to start fresh and do it right. Why make a sequel to the film if none of the principal actors are coming back and the last installment was 8 years ago?!

    Re-Boot! Re-Boot! Re-Boot! (hard to get a good chant going online…)

    1. Hey man! No need to drag in Norrin Radd’s name on this. :)

I actually thought “Rise” was a step up from part 2.
      just Because of ol’ Surfer.

Tim Story and lackluster writing with wooden acting from Mr. Fantastic,Ivisible Woman were the faults of both of those films.
      not Norrin Radd.

  2. Liked the 1st in spots, had more good than bad though, Electra needs to be Re-cast (Gardner was a bad choice IMO/coming off her hit Alias I see whty she was cast though)the previous one had NO-ASS! and skinny frame, Electras all about the curves man!
Duncan is a toss up for me. Bull’s eye was a funny villan, but looked pretty cool shooting a paper clip at the bar keeps eye all while drinking a Guiness! Thats pretty cool.

    would see another.

  3. My big problem with the first movie was the CGI. If I remeber correctly they used the same graphics engine from Spiderman One and I don’t think that it work at all for DD’s moves.

  4. I don’t know how this story could work with out the back story and relationship between Matt and Karen being firmly established so that her fall and betrayal could have some weight to it. A more serious and grim tone would need to be set for this also. Some of the things in the first movie were cool. I like how they represented his radar sense and I didn’t think Affleck did a terrible job. Joe Pantoliano wasn’t right for Ulrich. If they use Ulrich in the new one, they need to establish the Bugle news room and what not. Colin was the worst Bullseye, the guy was just terrible. Duncan wasn’t a bad Kingpin but I think they need to start over with all new actors. This thing needs to have some court room drama, some grit and some grime, it’s hell kitchen after all. I also think Bendis’s story arc dealing with the same issue is better suited for movie making. The movie could end with Matt being sentenced to prison and the sequel could deal with Ed Brubaker’s arc of Matt and the Kingpin trying to survive in prison.

    1. Booooooyah! nailed it Dude!

      Court Room Drama!

Although My heart will always be with the Frank Millar Version of DD.
love the Grit and Grime of those babies!

  5. The first movie was campy and cheesy in parts but I didn’t hate it. In fact it is a guilty pleasure of mine. Its been playing on Starz all last week and I caught it like 3 times. Me and my friends do the Bullseye dance when he catches all the glass shards (yes at the club lol). I like Garner as Electra. Matt Murdock is a great character with a Ton of story he can easily have a better go at a movie the second time around.

  6. I’ve never quite understood the near-universal hatred of the first movie. It wasn’t that bad — a little melodramatic, maybe, but a cohesive movie with a decent story. So, I’d like to think bringing the cast back would be possible, but that’s highly doubtful. This will definitely be a movie onto itself, for the (undeserved) stigma of the first film.

    1. Yeah, me too. And I’m a big fan of the comic. I thought the film did a very decent job, and I especially enjoyed seeing the film’s take on DD’s “radarsense”.

  7. Fox doesn’t have rights for Cap, so there wouldnt be a cameo there tying it to the Avengers/Cap films.

But anything else is possible. I just hope it brings justice to the character. I liked the first one alright (and MCD as Fisk is fine by me) so I have no issues with them continuing it.

  8. [Quote]Can Micheal Clarke Duncan return as Fisk?[Quote]

I have to say I hated Duncan as Fisk, after reading the comics for so many years Duncan just did no justice to that character at all.

Heck, there were many things I disliked about the Daredevil film but the Kingpin and Bullseye characters were especially bad. My favorite part of Daredevil was Jack Murdock played by (David Keith) he was money.
