Matthew Vaughn Officially On To Direct Thor

Thor-NewWe first mentioned the fact that Matthew Vaughn was going to be the new director for Thor two months ago, but now it appears it has been made official. The man who was originally supposed to direct X-Men 3, directed Layer Cake, the upcoming Stardust and partnered a couple of times with Guy Ritchie has been officially given the nod to direct the comic book adaptation.

I was quite disappointed when Vaughn dropped out of X-Men 3, and to this day he’s never really given a believable answer as to why… and I guess we’ll never know. Stardust is looking wonderful so far (I can’t wait to see it) and with him now accepting the job for Thor, I’ve got to wonder if somewhere deep down he doesn’t regret walking from X-3 and wants to jump on that Comic bandwagon again.

Still… as good of a choice as I think Vaughn is to direct… my opinion of a Thor comic movie hasn’t changed. This isn’t a good idea. Thor is a lame comic book character, and translating that character to the screen will look nothing short of Valhalla sized ridiculous. Unless major changes are made to both the look, and character of Thor (which will royally piss off the comic fans), it just won’t work on screen. That’s my opinion anyway.

The guys at AICN have this synopsis of the script:

Anyway – I sat down and dove into the script. This isn’t a Donald Blake, doctor on vacation story. Instead, this is a genuine TALES OF ASGARD story. In the first few pages the creation of everything takes place… the origin of the gods, their universe and how midgard (that’s are place in the universe) came to be.

It has Thor and Loki as brothers – the best of friends… and it shows how that goes bad. The origin of the uru hammer, Thor being thrown from Asgard to being a mere mortal… it’s a HUGE story – easily the most awesome script that a MARVEL project has ever had.

Harry’s enthusiasm not withstanding… I still think this is just a silly idea and will flop. I thought the same thing about Catwoman and Elektra and was right. However, I also initially thought the same thing about Iron Man, and they’ve won me over… so we’ll have to wait and see.

  1. “As a kid, I loved watching the reruns of the THOR cartoon (from the 60s, based on the early comics). That version of Thor was basically a rip off of Captain Marvel (Shazam), but that’s the one I like…Don Blake, the cane, the blue and red costume, Nurse Jane Foster.”

Prophet Moe Hammond, Donald Blake is Thor’s human entity, Billy Batson was himself, calling the name Shazam tranformed into his alter ego Captain Marvel, theres a difference.

  2. @Naught

Can’t help it. I love that damn movie:)

    @Ryan

I happen to be a WWE fan and a fan of one Mr. HHH, but I don’t know if he can act. Yeah, Thor doesn’t require Oscar-worthy chops, but I don’t know if he could do it. If he could do it, he’d be PERFECT, though, no doubt. I dunno if he’d be willing to leave WWE for the amount of time it would take to shoot this thing, but we’ll see, I guess.

  3. I don’t know about this one. As a kid, I loved watching the reruns of the THOR cartoon (from the 60s, based on the early comics). That version of Thor was basically a rip off of Captain Marvel (Shazam), but that’s the one I like…Don Blake, the cane, the blue and red costume, Nurse Jane Foster. I’d like to see the movie be a huge cinematic clash of mythology and soap opera. But if this is going to be some viking flick set in the middle ages with Thor in a suit similar to the pathetic one used in the INCREDIBLE HULK RETURNS TV movie, then I think I must pass on this.

  4. Quite excited about this film, and I see that problems will arise with choosing a man as big as thor and sporting the long hair and used to carrying a sludgehammer, to me there is only one man on earth to play this part and that is WWE star Jean-Paul Levesque aka “Triple H” “Hunter Hearst Hemsley” known for being huge, long hair, and his weapon of choice on the show is surprise surprise a sludgehammer. I know people will say he won’t be a good enough actor, but hes has experience, and i really feel he could pull it off, SPREAD THE WORD!!!

  5. Oh Kris when are we going to stop comparing all movies to 300? ;)
I think the movie can’t be too colorful, and DO NOT GET an Arnold to be Thor. That would annoy me to no end. That said, however this end up to be, I’d still watch it. I have a feeling I’d have a good laugh over it.

  6. If they do it in the style of 300, it could be amazing. If they do some lame shit where they set it in present day or something, then yeah, it’ll blow.

  7. the rock as thor??? that has to be a joke, right? many marvel heroes could be cast with any race regardless of what they are in the comics. but thor is that asterisk. he is one character that has to be blond hair blue eyed…he is a viking. dewayne, although a very fair skinned black dude, just will no look right in a blonde wig and jessica alba style ff blue eyes…he would look like a extra-large lil kim

  8. if this is set in The Days Of Yore & not NY,it’s a good start. also Goyer not directing is another bonus. he would have cast his buddy Triple Homo as Thor knowing him.thank fuck for small mercies.

  9. Yeah, John, the look of Thor is pretty ridiculous — especially in a 2007 setting. But there’s no info at this point that Thor will be another modern day New York-based Marvel film. Could be a massive Viking epic, closer in spirit and tone to The Lord Of The Rings than the Spider-Man films.

I’ve always thought a good way to handle Thor was a period piece, a story of an outcast God forced to live amongst mere mortals. Put Thor in the middle ages and the costume’s not an issue. Then, if the first film’s a success, the sequel brings the character into modern times and maybe then the armor and cape will at least feel familiar and comfortable rather than immediately jarring.

They could also be angling to ditch the super-duds for a more Highlander-like natural costume and allow the character’s strength and stature be determined by his actions not his get-up. As long as it’s some long-haired blonde dude smacking dragons with his war hammer, I don’t think the comic geeks will do more than nitpick about ditching the Kirby threads.

  10. I like the thor character but he could do some jazzing up, he was my fave in the marvel universe growing up, if they could make it fantasitcal and leave out all the puny humans then i am all for it and i dont think it will flop at all
