  1. Stick to yer guns john!

You know, the first thing i do when i get to the office in the morning, is I get a cup of coffee and listen the audio edition while I am reading my e-mails.

It makes me laugh, and I likes it…replace doug, ppppfffttt, no dice, doug is hilarious.

  2. Hey Jack,

Well… I’m certainly not going to argue with you about it. You’re are totally entitled to your opinion, and like I said, no podcast is for everyone. The internet is a big place and I’m sure you’ll find another podcast that suites your style more and will entertain you.

    Cheers.

  3. being conversational and unprepared is fine but you risk being boring if the participants aren’t well informed enough to fully engage in the dialogue without any prep. For a show like that to be engaging and successful, it’ll depend on interesting hosts that are automatically ready with things to say. True, if a show was fully rehearsed and prepared for with a script, then it would appear too fake. I dunno. you’re saying if you make it prepared, there’s no way to be like ‘ebert and roeper’. but then again, u’re saying it’s futile to be prepared at all, cuz you’ll risk being phonies that are trying to act professional. And ur point is that the audio blog is special cuz it’s fully conversational. It’s a very nihilistic way of thinking, and ultimately, not good for you. lol.

And, I have to tell you. it’s really obvious that you guys do nothing to prepare for the show. well, John kinda brings a little prep since he runs the site, and Doug brings nothing but the comedy.

Well, it’s your site john. do whatever you feel is right to you. I still think your show’s sorta dull.

  4. Hey there Jack,

I’d be careful about throwing around judgments about who is knowledgable about film and who isn’t.

Don’t get me wrong… I’n not standing here proclaming to be the Movie Yogi or anything… but I think you’re misinterpreting non-preparation for being uninformed.

I’ve said this before, and your point makes it relevant to repeat here. We do absolutly ZERO preparation for the show. None. Zip. Oh sure, we could be like a lot of other shows that totally pre-prepare everything that they’re going to say… check all the facts in advance, basically get a script together… reherse it… and then get “on air” and pretend like it’s all off the cuff. But that’s not us.

This is not a site of movie experts (although I like to think I know a few things about film). This is a site for film fans and film converstion. That’s it. We write as fans, we talk as fans and TRY TO TALK ABOUT THE THINGS WE WOULD TALK ABOUT IF WE WERE JUST STANDING BY THE PROVERBIAL WATER COOLER MONDAY MORNING. (caps for emphasis… not yelling)

If we tried to be an Ebert and Ropper then we’d get laughed out of town. First of all the web is filled with Ebert wannabes and weekend film critics who like to think they know what we’re talking about.

The stuff we talk about come right off the top of our heads. Doing it that way means we may make a mistake with a quote sometimes… but that’s how you do it when your in a conversation. You don’t talk to your buddies about movies with a handfull of notes so you look smarter. :P

If that means that The Audio Edition isn’t for you… no prob. I can recomened several really good podcasts of professionals that you may find more to your liking. That’s the beauty of the internet dude… there’s somthing for all of us.

As for Doug, he doesn’t have a film degree… but I guarantee you you’ll be hard pressed to find another person who is as passionate about the movies he loves than he is… that makes him a fan… and being that rabid of a fan makes him perfect for my conversations (not to mention I personally think he’s hillarious)

The Audio Edition isn’t meant to be educational… it’s meant to be conversational. That means it’s not for everyone… and that’s cool.

    Appreciate your thoughts and comments.

    Cheers.

  5. Darren,

i wish u had said those things on the show.

And, part of the reason the show is sorta boring for me is that Doug and John aren’t the most knowledgable people. My point is still valid that generally Doug doesn’t have much to say. That makes the show boring too. If you replaced Doug with a more informed movie fan that was passionate and articulate about films, then the Audio blog could be a better listen for me. Does anyone feel this way too?

  6. I am suprised you guys did not mention the best line in predator, hands down.

When they are in the helicopter getting ready to drop, jesse ventura is handing out the chewing tobacco and says “Yer all a bunch of slack jawed faggots, this here will turn you into a goddamn sexual tyrannasaurus, like me.”

And don’t listen to detractors like jack, the only reason I listen and read the movie blog is because it is not pretentious and all knowing.

I don’t care about some pseudo intellectual’s biased reviews, I want to be entertained.

  7. jack, i like the fact that doug isn’t the most knowledgable film buff in the universe. it makes things more interesting, and funny. i don’t come here wanting to listen to film reviews, but more bout the news, rumours, etc. if i want reviews, i’ll jus look at rottentomates.

i think darren’s point abou stay is spot on. who has heard about this film, and actually knows what it’s about? i think the box office result reflects that the answer is not many at all.

bottom line is tht this site isn’t based on reviews, and it’s all he better for it.

  8. “Doom” as #1 actually didn’t come as a surprise– it was projected to take the weekend. BUT… 15 million has to be a big fat stinky pile of disappointment, despite a #1 opening.

Congrats to all (or one)of you on your Halo 2 love.

  9. I hit me while I was in the bathroom today. That’s kinda gay, Doug. From last Friday, that trailer music, “makes me want to have sex with a lion!”.

    Don’t you mean, lioness?

  10. “I use newbie online critics because there seem to be so many of them online, so many web sites with hundreds of movie reviews. They would seem more qualified since they actually write about movies.” -Jack

That’s funny. I once contributed to an online amatuer film review hub called ‘The Projector Booth’ – and this French website quoted one of my reviews (Brotherhood of The Wolf)…in French. I thought that it was hilarious. Did I have any impact on the French people? I don’t really think so.

When that site went on hiatus, I tried to find out other avenues to get out my agnst. One site was a bit too fanboy for my tastes, and a site I recently joined as an amatuer film reviewer shows promise, but I doubt I will have a ton of influence. I’m not a major critic, no one pays me, I pay to go see films like the rest of the zombified masses. Since I like the stuff that goes on behind the filmmaking process, I suppose I do have a set of self-made guidelines I generally follow; and it comes down to being fair.

I generally don’t care much for extreme ‘newbie online critics’ fanboy-like reviews because there is the danger of a slight bias. My guideline is a wieght of scales, so to speak. If I see nothing but crap, I will gravitate to and hang my hat on even the shortest glimmer of hope. Take for example, the recent film ‘Doom’. I liked Karl Urban, I liked three scenes in the film, all in or around the same location and that’s really it. What made the film a downer for me was, when the team arrives at the Mars station, there are sex jokes and one where the joke fails regarding one’s sister for a former flame.

Nobody in the audience, nobody, thought this was funny. What the scene accomplished was the following:

    * makes you root for someone to be a victim/characters you would care less about.

    * makes a bit of confusion, since they should know who Grimm’s sister is, even

    in a briefing.

    * makes them look really stupid.

Since this happens early on, it sets a tone for the rest of the film, and not a good one.

A good point in the podcast was made: Where did that 60 million go? I seen better films that go right to video…from almost twenty years ago that had more excitement and suspense.

Anyway…on to my comments for tonight’s podcast.

    1) Well, okay, maybe my opinions do count for something. ‘The Sealer’ Doug? “Seel Hunter’? That made me smile. I liked that. Which reminds me. I’m not sure about that ‘other’ sites slam on comedians from The Great White North was all about. All that did was getting me thinking about Jim Carrey and Denis Leary. And being called The Sealer, which will probably be my new nickname until the end of time.

    2) Sin City TV show. Ugh. Forget, for the moment, the graphic content, CGI composite backgrounds and if it will air on HBO or the FX channel. What kind of a series would it be? Most likely, an anthology, right? I don’t want to bring the ants to the picnic, but…when was the last time an anthology series really did well on TV? I mean, last more than a season? Besides ‘Tales From The Crypt’? It’s a moot point really, because if ‘Sin City 2’ does well, how much you want to bet ‘Sin City 3’ isn’t far behind?

    3) Predator 3. ‘Re-imagine’ isn’t the same as re-boot. Think of the new ‘Battlestar Galactica’ TV series. ‘Re-imagine’ simply means taking the original source mateial and spitting on it. I’d much rather see Predator 3 take place on another planet. Also, I should point out in the first film, the film was, in effect, taken from the Predator’s point of view. It only hunted Dutch’s team after it believed that they had no remorse for the destruction they had caused…or was the Predator going to take out that little camp, and got jealous that someone beat him to it?

In any case, no AvP2. Count your blessings.

    3) Double Dipping DVDs

I don’t mind if after having a bare bones snap case cardboard horror like Warners put out years ago (and still occasionally do) that SE make nice replacements, such as the recent SE of the Burton Batmans, or Micheal Mann’s ‘Heat’. I do share the pain though, and refuse to buy some DVDs (and even older titles) because I suspect a better edition will come along someday.

Or like the recent re-issue of ‘Saw’ which has this plastic cover with red water in it to make it look like blood. You really got to love the film to get that. But I won’t. It’s a gimmick to sell tickets to Saw 2.

Of the double dips I got, the ones I kept are the Daredevil regular and DC, they are different films, different features…why they couldn’t release it the first time…? The X-Men DVD and X-Men 1.5 are …interesting. The original has bonus features and easter eggs not in X-Men 1.5, and the first one was, of course, issued when DVD mania was not as wild as it is today. Oddly, I noticed that Fox has brung back the first X-Men “before” 1.5 in new packaging. (“Fox selections”; blue covers…this crap) Yawn.

I got the ‘Manhunter’ special edition and the limited edition.

That’s it for me. No more. That’s as far as I go with double dips.

But y’know something, I think the studios put too much pressure on films to hit DVD too fast. But what do I know- I still for the life of me can’t figure out why studios put out more full frame editions than widescreen.

Or maybe it just looks that way.

  11. Great show guys!

It seems to me you and Cinablend are having a podcast war. I list to both of you guys. So I am going to stay in the middle and not make comment. Even thou the pod bitch slapping is funny!

    Donna A.

  12. joseph simmons,

it’s been something that’s been meaning to say for a while actually. i find it strange that for a show about movies that the people on it aren’t movie knowledgable and have little to nothing to say. and, very rarely do they actually discuss about movies, it’s mostly discussion on gossip and hearsay about genre-movies. for example, talking about the transformers movie. Who knows what the movie would look like or what would be in it? The movie hasn’t been put into production yet, and wouldn’t be released in maybe another 2 years. Why not talk about the actual movies that are in the theaters? when they do discuss movies, it’s just a few minutes on it without digging too deep. I still think the movie blog would be much better if you had a couple of newbie online movie critics. then, at least there’d be more stimulating discussion about the movies. I use newbie online critics because there seem to be so many of them online, so many web sites with hundreds of movie reviews. They would seem more qualified since they actually write about movies.

  13. john,

i think the audio blog would be more interesting if you had more movie-knowledgable co-hosts. So far, it seems like it’s mostly your show and Doug justs sit back and listen. For example, only you knew about Stay. I’m assuming Doug didn’t know much about the movie cuz he just stayed quiet, and Darren confused it for a dramatic-comedy.

  14. goon, tha’s actually a fair point. going in, who would’ve thought predator could be a good film. i mean an ex-bodybuilder and a wrestler as part of your main cast? however although it wasn’t an oscar winning piece of film, it ended up being one of the best 80s action films, with some trully brilliant lines.

hell, that film is one of the best examples of 80’s film making.

so who knows what this “restart” could mean…

  15. first of all, i see you’ve upped the audio quality on the ‘cast :) although this does mean more waiting for thos folks who have to transfer it to a portable. not that i care, since i tend to just stream it. the less waiting time in listening to you guys, the better.

doug, thanks for the baton. i won’t drop it :)

re: doom, maybe a fair bit went to id? consulting and what not. how much did the rock get paid as well? it must’ve been a fair bit to get him to star in it.

re: stay. ouch! that’s gotta hurt. i’m surprised they didn’t recut a new trailer to try and generate some more interest. they should’ve gotten those f4 guys. any idea if/when it’s going to open in the uk? i haven’t seen anything for it.

    dvd releases:

and that’s why you should never run out and buy the dvd straight away unless it says special/collector’s edition on it.

the worst case was with xmen. they assured us there would be no new version. then when x2 was coming out, x1.5 was made.

does anyone actually buy two versions?

darren makes a good point. john, you need to relax, and just wait for the special edition. lhow i don’ like he hought of hving o have waited over 5 yers for a big lebowski special diion, and even hen, find hat there is barely ny exras on it.

i guarantee sin ciy will be on hbo or showime. there’s no way they can get it on nework tv. and if they tried, i’m sure frank miller wouldn’t let it get neutered for network tv, and sincee he owns he rights he must get final say.

also, did you ever think it might be an animated show like that spawn tv show?

if they’re pushing for a tv show with the same look, and for a weekly format, either 12odd or 21ish episodes, surely this is the only logical way to do it?

darren, nice idea about predator begins. but doesn’t this mean that your main character doesn’t speak? actually, thats perfect for a wrestler who can’t act…

doug, very spiffy coat you got your eye on there. looks nice. :)
