Mission: Impossible (also known in the new Blu-ray release as M:I) is a 1996 American spy film directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise. Following on from the television series of the same name, the plot follows a new agent, Ethan Hunt and his mission to uncover the mole within the CIA who has framed him for the murders of his entire IMF team. Work on the script had begun early with filmmaker Sydney Pollack on board, before De Palma, Steven Zaillian, David Koepp, and Robert Towne were brought in. Mission: Impossible went into pre-production without a shooting script. De Palma came up with some action sequences, but Koepp and Towne was dissatisfied with the story that leads up to these events. U2 band members Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton produced their own version of the original theme song. The song went into top ten charts around the world and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The film was the third highest grossing of the year and received mixed to positive reviews from film critics. The film marked the beginning of a film series, with sequels Mission: Impossible II, III and Ghost Protocol released in 2000, 2006 and 2011. A fifth film, Mission: Impossible V, is fast tracked with Tom Cruise reprising his role. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is a member of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), an unofficial branch of the CIA, and part of a small team of agents. Led by Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), the team assembles for a mission in Prague to prevent an American diplomat from stealing the Non-Official Cover (NOC) list, a comprehensive list of all covert agents in Eastern Europe, from the US Embassy. The mission goes hopelessly wrong, apparently resulting in the deaths of the entire team except for Hunt. Technician Jack Harmon (Emilio Estevez) is impaled in an elevator shaft, Phelps is shot on a bridge by an unknown assailant, Hannah Williams (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) and Phelps' wife Claire (Emmanuelle Beart) are killed by a car bomb and Sarah Davies (Kristin Scott Thomas) is stabbed by an unknown assailant.

I agree with Bird's ability to draw out the magic of cinema through his background in animation. A lot of the film had a very grand, sweeping feel to it. I also quite enjoyed the way they handled the villain; I like that he wasn't a super-genius or anything spectacular, just someone in the background to fuel the amazing action sequences and grand spectacles IMS were tackling. Though Hoffman was a great antagonist in MI:III, I think this was a nice shift for the 4th installment.
All around, I agree that it was a solid action flick.

This was highly the best mission impossible yet.. It was a little bit better then the second one. But this one has to be seen in IMAX and it really takes the movie to another level.. I loved it

Come on Tom C.---What were you thinking?? Was this suppose to be a light comedy or an action thriller?? Don't kill off "bad guys or girls" before you develop their sinsiter motives. (Like the attractive blonde that couldn't fly.) Just two thumbs down. I was looking for a stimulating plot--instead got some milk-toast acting with some nice action scenes and scenery-I will give you that...But C'mon Tom--weak-.

Hollywood needs to stop remaking movies. The collective imagination of artists and the population in general is much more encompassing than multi-million dollar remakes of the same type of material. Movies need to start becoming more of a risk again. Sometimes its good to see great promotions and plot lines only to find out the movie is total bust after going to the theater, I like to be provided with variety and choice. But by continuously feeding me Rocky, Mission Impossible, Men in Black, Spider Man etc your telling me you know what I like and as long as you put Superman in the movie it doesn't matter whether its bad or good your coming to see it and Ill get your money and that's all that matters. By learning to take risk and feel our way along movies can graduate to the next level of creativity. Remakes should be done in great moderation, more like once every 10 years if anything.
