I think it will be time to take the fight to the aliens's world. I like the idea Anthony W. said about keeping the time progression in the films consistent with real life. The film was released back in 1996--can't believe it's been 14 years! Obviously we've got a few more years until this thing would actually see the screen. So what has the human race done during the those 16 or 17 years. That's a lot of time for the world's top engineers to reverse engineer the alien technology and design our own spacecrafts. Think of a whole fleet of human space ships converging on the alien's planet, led by General Steven Hiller (Will Smith).

That's what those punks get for messing with Earth. Booya!

I sort of think it might be interesting to see "a progression" of where The World has rebuilt, how do people survive, a commenter mentioned reverse engineering. It also has a luxury of not having a strong need to bring back some characters from the first film- not the characters who were killed off...but it was clearly established that other pockets of people survived around the world. There could be an international cast.

Ah! But this is ID4-H Club we are talking about. The human race has built up a house of cards and the next wave (or sleeper cell) of alien combat ships are there to knock it down!

And Emmerich is good at knocking things down. I personally am sick and tired of FX being the story and not serving the story. I'm tired of the cliched characters, on the nose and self aware speeches. I wanted every living soul in 2012 to die horribly I hated the movie that damn much. I wanted Emmerich's version of Godzilla to come up from the depths with his/her bag of chips and tear the arks in half.

ID4 has the best potential of his films sequelwise (although stories could be also around "surviving civilizations' from "Day After Tommorow' and that piece of junk 2012 as well) '

But Emmerich should move on to other projects. He can make popcorn entertainment. He can throw in enembles. I'm not eager for ID4tune cookie, but It wouldn't bother me if it came to pass. Could be interesting.

Looks like I'm going to be to only one to say this, but please leave this one alone!!! Independance Day is a fantastic sci-fi movie that just doesn't need a sequal. One second everyones complaining about the lack of originality in Hollywood and now this comes up again.

I'm getting fed-up of mentally denying the existance of so many crappy sequals and remakes. Examples: The Mummy 3, The Fog (Remake), AvP 2, Lost boys 2, Spider-man 3. Friday the 13th (2009), Blade trinity etc. Need I go on?????

In reply to <a href="https://www.themovieblog.com/2010/10/pullman-talks-independence-day-sequels/#comment-262684">Rodney</a>.

I have to agree with Rodney on this. Even though I wasn't a huge, huge fan of SG-1, I did like SG: Atlantis a great deal and the current show isn't all that bad either. There have been DTV films spun off from these series, one even involving time travel. I also think that as cheesy fun as the Emmerich film was, the spinoff series franchises have since outshined -and improved- the original film.

Could there be a new theatrical StarGate movie? Of course. Star Trek had its shows side by side with theatrical releases; X-Files had a film while the show was in production. If someone wanted a StarGate film, it could happen---but it would be a new adventure with new characters or characters who are played by the actors in the franchises. I don't really "see" it (because they most likely will aim for a DTV market as they have done in the past)...

That's what I was thinking. Use the books they made for the sequels. Silent Zone is great becuase it starts out after ID4, but goes back to Oken's early days. Then there's that one that shows the events of another battle with the aliens.
