  1. Hi John,

I really love your site and your podcast. But it is the 29th and the podcast is still not on iTune…

Keep up the good job and good night.

  2. Hey guys, I love the podcasts. Just one question – is there a delay between when you post the podcast here and when it shows up on your iTunes feed? Because I seem to always check in on the site, see a new podcast is up, then run to iTunes to see if it’s downloaded so I can toss it on the ole’ iPod. But it always seems to show up close to a week after I see it on the blog. Thoughts? Concerns? Unspeakable ancient curses?

  3. the only difference that really matters between Batman Begins and Superman Returns is that BB is fucking great and SR was fucking franchise killingly awful.

Plus Batman really had to overcome the stench left behind from Batman And Robin. You think incredible hulk had a hurdle to overcome?? HULK is nowhere near as big of a turkey as Batman Ice follies.

Superman Returns was supermans return to the big screen after what? 17-18 years?? It should have done much better especially with now much they spent on it.
If it really was a success do you really think it would be taking this long to get a sequel of the ground?? Come on…

hulk style reboot that is what we will ultimately see.

  4. Great show again guys :)

I’m thinking DK’s opening will be between $90_$100 million.

I think the internet buzz, built in fanbase from BB and the “Heath-factor” will be the reasons. Don’t forgot that people who don’t even like batman may want to go see his last role. Also BB was a very strong seller on DVD

Also I think ill disagree with John’s point about the kid friendly factor. Both DK and IronMan are rated PG-13. Kids love superheroes and when they see its rating will probably Be bugging parents to go see it. Parents will notice as well and most likely will take them to see it.

    Just a thought

PS. Heath is looking like a damn good casting choise right about now. Love that fucked up laugh from the TV spots

    Peace

  5. That’s true, but totally irrelevant in the discussion. It doesn’t matter if Batman only cost $5 dollars to make…. more people still saw Superman… more people were interested in Superman.

    John
You are absolutly correct. I guess I wasnt thinking that you meant it like that.
I hope you are right about Dark Knight. I really really really hope that it doesnt make $100M opening weekend.

  6. If you’re not sure of how much bank TDK will make ( and I have no clue why you would doubt it) you need not look further than this link

    http://weekendgross.blogspot.com/2008/06/dark-knight-tracking-extremely-well.html

As if you needed much evidence for whether Warner Bros.’ next Batman offering The Dark Knight will be a certified mega-blockbuster, MovieTickets.com just released an internal poll showing that Christopher Nolan’s latest offering could be the biggest debut of the summer, if not the entire year. According to the poll, 81% of male moviegoers and 66 percent of female moviegoers polled June 10-15 intend to see “The Dark Knight” opening weekend. 100% of ticket buyers polled were aware of The Dark Knight’s release this summer, compared with 49% of ticket buyers three weeks before “The Incredible Hulk” and 36% of buyers three weeks before “Iron Man.”

The Incredible Hulk muscled its way to a $54.5 million opening, while Iron Man bowed with $98.6 million. The biggest opening of all-time was last May’s Spider-Man 3 with $151.1 million, a number I expect The Dark Knight to possibly challenge on July 18th.

this film is track thrice as good as Iron Man was. 100% 3 weeks before the film is even released? After the July 18th weekend, even the projection reels on the film are gonna be made out of money.

  7. @ Steve Carroll:

First off, the notion of ‘profitable’ is nebulous at best.

Secondly, people in North America have isolationist myopia, believing that the domestic ticket receipts are the overwhelming source of cinema revenue for Hollywood releases, especially the blockbusters. This is erroneous.

Thirdly, as I’ve droned on about elsewhere, The Studios derive only about 12% of their revenue from their films’ theatrical ticket sales.

John, what you really need is a ‘cheat-sheet’, the basics on ‘How Films Make Money: The Truth Behind The Numbers’. Most people here (and elsewhere) do not have a working knowledge of how the machine works. What did Sy Syms maintain? ‘An educated consumer is our best customer.’

  8. Doesn’t a movie have to make about double in theatre to call it profitable or am I off a bit there?

So if a movie cost $100 Million, it would need to make around $200 Million to be profitable, after production costs and theatre take (not including advertising costs).

That is how I understood it to be. If anyone has more accurate info, I would very much appreciate it.

  9. Hey Sahil,

    You said:

“So even thought Superman Returns made more money Batman Begins made a much bigger profit.”

That’s true, but totally irrelevant in the discussion. It doesn’t matter if Batman only cost $5 dollars to make…. more people still saw Superman… more people were interested in Superman.

  10. Wanted = Matrix ripoff delux with boner features.

As much as I hate WALL-E I so look forward to it kicking the (f-ing sh#t) lead out of Wanted.

And sure people will like it, yeah “people”.

  11. @ Kristina
    Superman Returns Budget = $270Million
    Batman Begins Budget = $150Million

Superman Returns World Wide Gross = $391Million
Batman Begins World Wide Gross = $371Million

    Superman Returns Profit = $121Million
    Batman Begins Profit = $221Million

So even thought Superman Returns made more money Batman Begins made a much bigger profit.

  12. James Marsden was able to bring out the emotion with Cyclops in the X-Men movies without his eyes. Hopefully Ray Park can do the same with Snake Eyes.

  13. Great show guys,

@ Sahil – Take a pill guy. They talk off the cuff, so what if he was 10 off the opening weekend boxoffice of Batman. So what he said 2 weeks instead of 3. It was spontaneous conversation. I bet you a million dollars if you sat in with them on an hour long conversation with 100 things being said a minute all off the top of your head you’d get hammered. Quit being so knit-picky.

@ Chip – Actually, Superman made almost 20 million more than Batman Begins. You were only looking at the domestic totals.

  14. John please please get your facts straight.

I love this podcasts and love your predictions and everyone elses on the podcast but I hate it when people say something and they are wrong.

You said that Batman Begins made around $60M but it only made $48M.
You also said that Indy4 after IronMan but it came out 3 weeks after.
I am sorry but I find a way to complair about everything.
    Again love the podcast.

  15. Wow, it sounds like they changed everything about “Wanted” from the comic book, except a few character names. It kind of begs the question of why didn’t they just make their own movie as opposed to calling it “Wanted”.

  16. My question is what is opening after The Dark Knight. Personally I havent paid any attention to what opens after July 18. If TDK is indeed the last blockbuster of the summer season, I think that will add legs to its run.

I have been hearing alot of buzz about TDK from people that usually dont buzz about movies at all, in my circle of friends.

Im going to guess at about 25 mil on Friday, 35 mil on Saturday and 20 again on Sunday for about $80 million total opening weekend. But I wouldnt be suprised if it went Indy Jones and made $100 mil. Its a long shot, but I think its possible that ALOT of people are really really psyched about this movie and may see it multiple times opening weekend. I know I will anyway.

  17. Hey Padthai,

The problem is that it’s not a matter of SHOULD opening weekend be important… the reality is that it IS important.

Word of mouth is wonderful… but it’s only effective for the first 2 weeks really. Most people see a movie they’re interested in within the first 2-3 weeks.

Also, movies don’t stay around in theaters as long because more and more movies are being released every year.

Batman was a big hit opening weekend… it made just a hari under 50 million. It did pick up some momentum because of word of mouth… but not too much. Movies usually make around 2x – 3x the amount they make on opening weekend. Batman did 4x… so it’s not that much of a stretch.

  18. I don’t think opening weekend should be that important. They should focus more on holding power on the box office, like how long does it stay in the top 10, how big is the 2nd weekend drop. Too often you focus too much on opening weekend, and you don’t care that movies don’t stay in the theaters too long anymore. This is a huge problem because word-of-mouth isn’t being built. That is why even shitty movies like Indy 4 can make so much money. Batman Begins wasn’t a huge hit opening weekend, it didn’t make close to 100 million. But it built an audience, bad small drops, and in the end it was a hit.

  19. *falls to knees* DAREN!!!!

I cannot wait till wanted. I’m becoming such a bigger fan of James as each movie he appears in.

I’m fucking pumped for TDK. From the people I’ve been talking to, they are going to see TDK 2-3 times in one day. I think TDK will earn 75mil opening weekend.

    P. Diddy did a good job in Monsters Ball.
