The Movie Blog: Uncut – March 19th 2007

Audio-Edition-Group.jpg

Hey there everyone. This was actually one of the more interesting Podcasts we’ve ever done. Every once in a while I like to take an issue raised by a movie and explore it’s social impact on us today. We do that today and it was a lot of fun. So, on today’s show we talk about:

1) Doug joining up with The Movie Blog full time

2) Bush-God-Politics With the release of films like “Deliver us from Evil” and “Jesus Camp” on DVD, we ask the question of how do these films portray the religious right… and is that a good or bad thing from a Christian point of view. Does the presidency of Bush help or hurt the image of the Christian faith? Bruxy offers some great insight on this one.

3) Emma Watson leaving the Harry Potter franchise?

4) John and Doug review Dead Silence

5) Is there going to be a 300 part 2?

6) Movie based on great history we’d like to see made

7) Tony Soprano in Batman?

All this and a few things more.

  1. @Darren
    Correction noted. Big time oops:)

As for the show, 300 part 2, I kinda hope not, but as long as there’s money to be made, the studio will go for it. I hope Emma comes back. She IS the best of the three young actors, and no matter what else she does, she’ll always be Hermione. Stuff like that doesn’t just go away because you leave. Kinda like how Nicole Kidman won an Oscar for God’s sake, but everytime she’s interviewed, they have to mention that she’s Tom Cruise’s ex. Some shit sticks to you forever, I guess.

  2. @Kristina.

“Miracle” is about (or sort of about) the 1980 **US** Olympic Hockey team, (sort of). It’s more about the coach. Not a bad flm, but average.Nothing to make it really stand out.

    Now…the rest.

While I disagree with some of what was said about the faith discussion – I do agree with most of it. I do believe that Christians should be aware of how the media protrays them, and it should be said throught history, that nobody holds other religions or atheism up to the same microscope as Christianity in general and Christianity is still around. It is been my observation that those who attack (dis)organized religion the most are those who have felt wronged or rejected by it, or smply don’t understand it so they stereotype it.

I have *ZERO* problem with the National Day Of Prayer, which was lightly reffered o in passing – which also covers other faiths, by the way- I think the suggestion (??) that Christians opposed to abortion (as they should be) are against single mothers (??)..did I hear that right? Maybe you all lost me in that part. I do know the suggestion that people of faith should “stay out of politics” is way off base. The current President is not “imposing” his (or Christian) views on the public. John Ashcroft was just as religious right- and maybe even more so- than President Bush. And Ashcroft resigned (along with Powell) shortly after Bush was re-elected.

My faith is tested and attacked, my faith remains. There is nothing wrong with questions. There is nothing wrong with being challenged. I think there’s something dreadfully wrong if Christians were not challenged and/or tested. Sometimes we fall. It is up to us if we get back up.

    Moving on…

    @Darren Con:

Elijah’s good. But, what about post-Elijah? You know, in 2Kings where Jehu cleans house? Has Jezebel tossed off a balcony, then eats dinner? Or howabout the slaughter of the prophets of Baal? How about hundreds of decapitated heads at the base of a wall?

    @Bruxy:

    How about Masada?

  3. I agree with Doug. Make a real viking movie. I liked 13th warrior. It was about as close to what a viking movie should be – especially the passing the bowl scene. The viking king was just awesome. They need to make a rated R version of a movie if they’re really going to do it.

  4. I think it was Doug who commented on Evangelical Christians choosing their own restrictive media. I’m not defending them but I think many of them base this on 2 Cor. 6:17 (…come out from them and be separate).

  5. Back…

You guys ranting on poor Emma Watson is wrong. I gotta agree with a lot of what John said, especially with the fact that no one was expecting the HP films to be as popular as they became, however, I think a couple things were overlooked in your discussion. For one, Doug may have been right when he stated it could be about the money. I’m not saying he is, but when a movie offers the “franchise actors” $10 million (combined) for a series that’s making a Billion dollars per movie (worldwide – Rodney and I had a small discussion about this), I think this could have something to do with it. I don’t think Emma getting $4 million is enough, when she’s really the lead actress in the movie.

Now, another overlooked fact could be that she’s bored with the role. It really doesn’t allow much stretch to the imagination and she could be tired of doing the same thing for 5 years. Throw that into the mix of no one expecting this series to become so popular, and going well beyond the normal three movie series that the public expect, and you could see why she may be interested in doing other things. Add to it that her contract with the production company may not allow her to do other roles until she’s no longer employed by them for Potter films, and that she’s now old enough and attractive enough for other roles that just might be coming her way, maybe she wants to explore another acting possibility.

As for Gandolfini and Batman – they really could make a strong character for him to play, but he’s stated that he won’t do another mafia role, so don’t expect that’s the role he would play. They could, however, introduce him near the end for an upcoming third Batman movie. That’s not out of the question, especially since the villans are already cast for this second movie (right?).

  6. The only person who sounds normal is Bruxy.. Were the rest of you guys smokin’ something? ;)

BTW…No other comment yet. I’m listening to the podcast now.

  7. @ Antonio

I don’t know man, the first topic was about the 2 new DVD releases. I’ve always kind of liked it when the guys take a movie, and then also talk about issues that movie raises, political, religious, cultural, whatever. Personally, I think it’s one of the things that makes it the best movie podcast around. But that’s just me. I can see where you’re coming from.

  8. I dunno… no offence as I respect everyone’s view but of late the audio edition is beginning to feel like it should have been renamed the bible uncut.

In as much as it was a hearty discussion, I like to listen to hear views on movies as opposed to religion. For that, I could choose to go elsewhere.

  9. John, I agree that he’s not a great actor (he was ok in Goblet of Fire, but not really good in the first three Harry Potter films) but he may be the one of the 3 main actors who ends up with the longest post-Harry career.

He was very good in the episode of Extras he did. In fact, he actually played himself as being a tool.

As Liam mentioned John, Dan’s been getting great reviews for the play he’s doing in London, and we’re talking about Lodnon theatre critics, who can be very cruel if they want to be.

I at least have to greatly admire him for putting such an effort in. How many film actors do you know (there are a few, but not many) who have the balls to go on stage and be criticised by a theatre culture that tends to have a bit of snobbery in it?

Anyway, the reason I asked the question is because when I use the word tool to describe someone, I usually mean it as a personal slite, just like saying someone may be a jerk, a prick, or an a**hole.

I though maybe you met him and he acted like a complete tool, or he did something outside of the films that warranted that type of description.

If it’s based just on his acting, that seems a bit harsh & personal, doesn’t it?

  10. My vote for favourite novel or series of novels to be filmed would be Stephen King’s – The Dark Tower. Awesome series – think The Man With No Name meets LOTR.

  11. Radcliffe has gotten great reviews in Equus on London’s west end on stage…

still they’ve basically grown up on camera, he has improved but only seeing him as harry potter doesn’t give one much to go on.

  12. Angelina Jolie has just been cast as the Fox (I’m assuming) in the live action adaptation of the comic “Wanted”.

    http://www.Superherohype.com

It’s being directed by the russian guy that did Night Watch, Timur Bekmambetov.

I thought she was black in the book, but hey, I’m not gonna complain about Angie being cast in anything. Mark Millar seems pretty pleased with how it’s shaping up (judging from his comments on his blog), but from what I can tell, it’s gonna be pretty different from the comic. No trans-dimensional stuff. The main baddie probably wont be burnt up (think Red Skull, but all over his body). And Shit-Head probably wont make an appearance. He’s one of the bad guys that’s made from the excrement of the 666 worst criminals and evil-doers ever. He sounds corny, but I loved the way he met his end.

Either way, Angelina Jolie in a comic book movie is good news.
Plus, it’s one that I loved. Really looking forward to it now.

  13. it was fine once I downloaded it from Odeo and transferred the file to my ipod.

I really enjoyed the conversation about Jesus Camp. you all have some really good opinions on it. I watched Jesus camp and honestly as a Christian who takes his faith seriously, I found it one of the most horrifying films I’ve ever seen. I was shocked. I really appreciated the conversation and wished I could call in with my 2 cents.

  14. Apparently, according to Warner Bros. that is

Emma Watson IS back as Hermione …..

“Mere hours after the news of Emma Watson’s possible premature departure from the Harry Potter franchise, Warner Brothers has already gone into spin control. The studio has issued numerous statements on the subject which all amount to the same thing. Warner Brothers is confident that Emma will be back for films six and seven.”

  15. Excellent discussion! Easily one of the best shows you guys have done.

And yes… Emma Watson is an attractive and talented girl, who will grow into a great actress if she decides to continue acting. I, as a Potter fan, will be sad to see her leave the movies becuase I agree she is the best child actor so far in the series. I have a feeling this is all for negotiation’s sake.

  16. No offense, John, but the technical side of The Movie Blog has really gone down hill the last couple of weeks. I still love your content when I can access it, but you really need to apply yourself more to making things work like they used to. This has become unprofessional.

  17. I’m getting it directly from Odeo, but yoru voices sound like you set the playback speed at 1/2 or 2/3 of normal speaking rate.

    Still, this’ll work.
