The Movie Blog: Uncut – March 12th 2007

On this installment of The Movie Blog: Uncut podcast (Formerly known as The Audio Edition… don’t forget we changed the name), Bruxy Darren Doug and I go through the gauntlet and come out victorious. That doesn’t really mean anything at all. So here is the stuff we talked about:

1) Just a bunch of Random stuff

2) 300 baby!

3) Transformers almost got an “R” rating

4) Frank Miller wants to direct now

5) Jennifer Hudson ungrateful? And John’s future of living in Doug’s guest house.

6) Shazam Movie

All this, and a few things more.

  1. Great show and I have to say a huge thank you for NOT making this a live show. The idea of having people interact is great but it made for a really disjointed and difficult to listen to show last week and I must admit that though I listened to it, I was really an effort and seriously, your shows have NEVER been an effort before.

    Again, thanks.

  2. No, Alfie. Bay and Spielberg didn’t work on the Island together. Just because the film was backed by Dreamworks, that does not mean they worked together where Spielberg put his name somewhere on the film.

Did Spielberg put his name on ‘Gladiator’ or ‘Collateral’? The ‘Shrek’ films?
No. But those are DreamWorks pix, aren’t they?

  3. sealey am with you…this reeks of an internet started rumour…

    hostel was R….saw was R…..hell 300 was R…

there is no way in hell there was so much robotcarnage that this thing got an R rating…

this is some bullshit to make it sound darker to counter all the herbie goes bananas sounding bumblebee matchmaking..the slapstick sounding goofiness and pee pee humour….

I know you all want this to be true….but there is no way it is…

maybe it is and I am wrong….. but seriously look deep into your lovin’ hearts – you know the truth…

oh and bay and speilberg worked on the island together…speilberg was executive producer on that too…it was a dreamworks thing….I heard that bruckheimer and bay had a half serious half kidding falling out over bay leaving the bruckheimer family…..

and that when the island tanked bruckheimer sent bay a wreath as a joke saying “told you not to leave” or something like that…anyway

  4. To back up Alfie a bit, Fantasia also got her “start” on Idol; she auditioned for the role Jennifer got in Dreamgirls. American Idol had zero do with Hudson getting Dreamgirls.

Now, for Gio…as for Elektra…Fox could have marketed Elektra differently, sure.
But even if they had great marketing, so what? The film was still a mess.

[my personal take is that Murdock/Daredevil should have been a supporting character as Elektra was a supporting character in the Daredevil film. The Elektra film was also apparently written to fit in with the DD director’s cut more than the theatrical release, and that may have been a small factor in the mishandling of the film.]

I’m starting to think that the Transformers “R” is not a studio gimmick, but worse, a fan-made internet rumor. I would find it too ironic that Spielberg would have to make a plea to the MPAA- when “Temple Of Doom” helped usher in the PG-13 rating back in 1984.

  5. of course it was sodomy….no question about it.

i don’t get the hudson thing…..does anyone really think when the producers were casting the film they said “o.k. so we have got eddie murphy, jamie foxx, danny glover…..good start good start but you know what we really need? someone who came 7th on american idol..that will help class the film up”

she auditioned with everyone else and got the part because she has an insane voice….not my cup of tea but she can sing like a mother fucker…..do you really think she was the most famous person who auditioned for the part?? someone who actually won idol auditioned and they didn’t pick her..they picked hudson for her voice

SHE DIDN’T WIN THE OSCAR BECAUSE SHE WAS ON AMERICAN IDOL!!!!SHE WON’T FOR HER WORK IN THE FILM…..and for all the people who say she will be a has been in three months…why is that?? i am not somekind of hudson fan but there is so much negativity towards her andi just don’t get it..this is a bullshit story being puffed up by TABLOIDS to stir up somekind of controversy…..she has thanked idol many many times and i guess she got sick of being asked about it as people act likes that the only reason she won……and that is just bullshit….

and as for people who say she didn’t deserve to win….well thats another pet peeve of mine…when people say about someone “there is no way they deserved to win best actor/picture/screenplay” whatever…they are called the ACADEMY awards right? so the academy votes…there is no conspiracy…there is like over 5000 members..they don’t all get together in some gigantic prequel style council chamber and vote….so whoever wins does deserve to win the ACADEMY award because the ACADEMY voted for it and it is their awards…..its not the peoples choice awards its the academy awards and they decide so whoever wins deserved it because that is who the ACADEMY picked….

    anyway…rant over

oh and again…R rated transformers – lies lies lies….

  6. I don’t know how Frank Miller will be as a director. If he does direct, I presume he will not be coming in completely blind. He supposedly has been on set assisting in the direction of his films or Sin City at least. Even if his involvement is limited it is probably more experience than some first time directors have.

Whether it is his intention or not, directing his next project himself will give him the ability to explore parts of the story that he might have in mind that he did not get to explore on the comic book page. From my understanding Sin City and 300 both were very true to the comic books.

Although most people complain when a movie strays from what the book or comic book it is based on. Directing the movie version would allow the original author to stray from the original story as much as they wish and no one can really complain that it did not stay true to the original work.

  7. I find it interesting to listen to your comments regarding Frank Miller’s desire to start directing. I love his stories, and although the movies based on his work have been AMAZING I do agree, to a certain extent, that he may need to get his feet a little more wet.

If I can just play devil’s advocate for a minute, perhaps he is simply trying to protect “Ronin”.

Or perhaps he is tring to avoid the fate suffered by an equally talented story-teller that you may or may not have heard of, one Alan Moore. Alan Moore is responsible for some of the best storytelling of all time in the form of “The Watchmen” (and Swamp Thing too as a matter of fact). But take a look at what Hollywood has done to his work without his approval:

    The League of Extraordinatry Gentlemen
Swamp Thing (not his property I know, but his writing on it was top notch)
    From Hell
V for Vendetta (a fun movie but does it compare to the book? Not so much)

  8. aqua teen hunger force rocks carnt wait to see the movie and doug that epsoide with the dog raping carl cracked me up so much i have it on my ipod now. great show guys

  9. Amazing show as allways guys. You really make driving to work in the morning a lot more tolerable.

Yeah, none of us here, let alone people at the academy would have ever heard of Jennifer Hudson at all if it wasn’t for American Idol. But, I just don’t see how she’s supposed to give a free plug to the show on the biggest night of her life. Sure, it would have been nice if she did, but she didn’t. No biggie

  10. Please keep the Monday shows like this! Live is great for the other ones, but it’s much better hearing all you guys when you don’t have the distractions of the audience.

300 was fraking amazing. Transformers news is probably a pub stunt. Miller should stick to comics. Jennifer Hudson will be a has-been in 3 months. Shazam will rock!

You guys are great! Best damn entertainment on the internet! I wish you did the show everyday.

  11. Thanks for asking about the sex podcasts Krintina. You’ve got two options:

    1) Download from our web site: http://www.themeetinghouse.ca.
    2) Download from iTunes by searching for “Bruxy Cavey” or “The Meeting House”.

Either way, look for our 5 week series entitled, “Let’s Talk About Sex”. There is an audio and a video version on iTunes.

    Enjoy!

    Brux

  12. Also, in the JLU cartoon (Clash), Superman and Captain “Shazam” Marvel had an amazing smackdown including magical lightning blasting of Superman resulting from Marvels “Shazams.”

  13. maybe the dog peeing on optimus is actually sexual in nature….like prime digs being pee’d on by dogs??

i still think this R rated story is total horseshit

  14. Yeah John, there may be a few other things to make it R. Dave Chappelle’s Block party got an R (from what I heard, I didn’t watch the movie), only because of language. So, maybe that’s what it is. Or maybe it’s hardcore nudity, although highly unlikely. Maybe Robot nudity? Bumblebee gets a queen bee girlfriend? I don’t know. I’m just as suprised as everyone else.

  15. Oh and Campea, you said in the 300 thread that you liked the narrator. HATED him. Ugh he ruined nearly every scene in which he spoke, save for the opening sequence. Ugh!

  16. I’m a girl, and 300 fucking ROCKED! Nagy was dead on about what he said: women do NOT dig a tacked-on romance. They didn’t overdo the Gorgo/Leonidas relationship, but the short amount of time that they had more than sold the relationship. Gorgo fucking rules!!!!!!!!!

  17. Oh my goodness. I’ve only listened to the first 10 minutes, but that was some of the best stuff you guys have ever done already. Hilarious. I’d love to hear Bruxy’s discourse on sex. You should link it up here John.

    You guys rock!
