  1. The only problem with Robin Williams hosting anything is that nothing but the Robin Williams show will take place! He’s awesome, but no award will be presented once he starts yapping.

    Henrik.
Not everyone who complains about the Oscars, watches the Oscars. I haven’t watched them in several years, for the simple reason that they’re not fun to watch, and they drag on. Like the guys stated, the Score category takes up more time than the Best Picture category, and that’s just wrong. Everyone deserves recognition on the Oscars, but not everyone should get a speech.

  2. I laugh so hard when I heard my question about John being so hard against Ellen!

I know your website for 4 months now and I didn’t knew you had such reaction from the public about your opinion about Brokeback or Chris Rock.

But just to let you know, me and my friends are listening you from Chicoutimi, Québec and we love the podcast! I hope you’ll continue it for a long time!

  3. That was a fantastic show! I haven’t listened to the first commentary but my vote for the next one is Conan. I think that would be bloody hilarious (plus I’d like to hear Doug go off on tangents about swords and stuff)hahaha

I completely agree with your take on the Oscars. For me, the Oscars are always a big event and I’m disappointed that we’re going to be forced to watch someone else host who, I doubt, will be able to pull it off. I saw give it to Robin Williams and let him loose. He would be hysterical.

  4. Henrik!! I apologise.

it is hard to read sarcasm and with all the other shit you read on message boards around the net I wouldn;t be surprised to read that from someone. I apologise.
I wrote that before I listened to the show.

tone of voice has a lot to with reading sarcasm….written text is a bit harder to pick up on….
    again…sorry.

  5. i can’t believe anyone actually liked daredevil.
    what a horrible movie.
still i find it strange that people besides woman who love the “pretty boy” image actually aren’t bored by affleck the actor.
    i’m so negative.

  6. Oh well alfie,

At least we both like movies…

I’ll admit he had a couple of funny lines and I love his show but in holywood they like to be made fun of in a funny, easy, non-demeaning way not in a “the truth hurts”, spiteful kind of way. Thats why Chris Rock will never host again. (And yes, people do focus on the “Uma, Oprah” bit but it was really uncomfortable to watch. It kind of drowned everything else out)

They want someone to sing funny songs about them like Billy Crystal, not shoot Dennis Miller style barbs at them.

I love Dennis Miller. I think he is hilarious, but its not what Hollywood wants in an Oscar host. And we all know the general public hasnt been behind a host since Crystal. Maybe Ellen will do a good job. Maybe not.

Come to think of it. I would love to see Miller host the show.

    1) First, I sort of like the site redesign. But on commments section, it’s rather tough to seperate who’s who. As can see, I have an idea around that for now. Other than this little factoid, it looks a lot nicer.

    2) The question isn’t if they will get back Ian McKellean or Peter Jackson, It is if the studios are indeed combining forces (MGM+NEW Line/Warners+ Wienstien Co) …if these details are in fact worked out, rights smoothed out…I think it should be a two-part film! Looks like the studios will combine to pump in 200 some million in the project.

    3) You forgot to mention, aside from the past weekend, Invincible was no#1 for two weeks. Invincible was a Disney film. That said, I’m willing to bet that on the roster for the Mouse, aside from the next Pixar film and Pirates 3, I’d expect the next formula inspired by true story underdog sports film.

    4) I usually been mixed on Affleck-tion, but he was good in ‘Changing Lanes’, okay in ‘Daredevil’…and you want a surprise? I liked him in “Phantoms”. Bigger surprise: “School Ties” [which starred Brendan Fraser!] But I think you’re spot on. If I were the studio right now, I’d push Affleck’s name up there for Globe and/or Oscar consideration. NOW. Otherwise, I predict ‘Hollywoodland’ might get overshadowed by that equally buzzed Brian De Palma film “Black Dehila”.

    5) I’m a bigger fan of Arnold Vasloo than Brendan Fraser…I have NEVER liked Fraser except for…that one movie..Dudley Do Ri…no, that’s not it. What the hell was that film!!! Monkeybone…yeah…no..apeshit!!! Oh. “School Ties”. Yeah. That’s the one.

    6) No problem with it. Everyone says this arguement when it may be a major motion picture. Make a TV Movie or incorporate it into a show? “It’s good that they are being topical and quickly deal with subject!”. Feature film? “Those exploitive bastards!”
All all can say is : Tv or theatrical…no difference. Just make a good movie.

    7) I think they picked Ellen because of how well she does the Emmys. At least that’s *what* I want to think. There’s that other side of me, which, John’s sarcasm aside, has a small point. It is crazy, so screwball I don’t even want to dwell on it. So I’ll throw it out there anyway. What if…they chose Ellen in part because she is gay? The sour points of “Crash” winning over “Brokeback” [and perhaps, Capote] might be enough to the point where this is an olive branch being offered. Do I think she’ll be fine as Oscar host?

The reason why Stewart wasn’t asked back is because his jokes went on both sides of the fence. I think they should have asked him back. But they didn’t. I wonder what would happen if Ellen…didn’t “live up to expectations”…who’s next? I predict Carson Daly.
Yeah. You heard me. Carson Daly.

[My personal prefence, again, is Divine Miss M Bette Midler]

    8) Looking foward to this film. I’ll have to see the film…you know what? Screw it. I don’t care if Craig is as good as Connery, Lanzby, Moore, Dalton or Brosnan. All of them took Bond in a different direction, made the character thier own. That’s going to be the same with Craig.

    9) Covenant…man, is the record for films not screened for critics? At least it has a killer soundtrack.

    -Sealer says…NEXT.

  10. hey John, I like the new site design, especially the very top and the left navigation. However, I thought the point of the site was to be uncluttered and if you have the ‘recent articles’ grey bar 2 posts down, it just clutters the whole navigation up. I think that the feature is sweet, but it needs to go at the top before there are any posts because it just leads to confusion.

  11. By the way about the oscars… If you think they run too long don’t blame the show, blame the fucking advertising.

The Oscars should be about celebrating movies both from an artistic viewpoint and a craftsmanship viewpoint. People who are at the top of their field in the category, fucking DESERVE recognition AND a speech. If you don’t care who wins Sound Editing, you don’t deserve to be watching the oscars, and you shouldn’t. Just check the lists the day after. It’s a celebration, not a fucking entertainment show.

I can’t stand watching it get more and more watered down, because people don’t give a shit about movies, and just want to see celebrities on stage cracking jokes.

The Oscars should be for people who are IN LOVE with the movies. If you are not in love with them to the point that sound editing, documentary – short feature, and best foreign film – short subject gets you excited, don’t watch the fucking show.

Quintin Tarantino said a very good quote, and I think he was quoting someone else but he said: “There are two types of movielovers. Those who love movies, and those who love the movies that they love.”

The first category deserves to see the oscars. The other category does not.

Mr. Joe Average Movie Goer who loves LOTR and POTC: Do NOT watch the oscars, because we can’t stand your fucking bitching and moaning about the running time, and how you “didn’t even recognize some of the people that died”.

  12. I am partial to the double Khan commentary myself. Or, given Doug and John’s polarized veiws on it, The Revenge of the Sith.

Craig does look awesome as Bond.

  13. This was great audio edition – the four of you should get together more often for these roundtables.

Your Ellen DeGeneres rant was HILARIOUS! I agree with Darren that much of the reason why not more people are outraged, opinionated, etc that she was chosen is because of apathy. I hardly ever watch the Oscars, just check in to see the acceptance speeches or the tributes because the show is just so damn fricking long and boring!

As for the Hobbit, it would be interesting to see how a different director would do it but I don’t know about two movies – there’s just enough to fit into one movie and if they expand the story it might get boring.

I have not seen the Casino Royale trailer so I can’t comment except to say that I was a bit iffy about Daniel Craig as James Bond but if all of you are psyched about how manly and suave he is, then things are looking up.

Okay, I’m a huge Ben Affleck fan and yes some of his career choices have been less than stellar. Like you mentioned he was great in Changing Lanes and I still loved his performance in Chasing Amy. I’ve only heard good things about his performance in Hollywoodland so I’m really pleased that he won Best Actor.

As for movies on horrific events – if you can tell a good human story and not be exploitative about it then yes it can be done but I agree with GODFATHER that if it’s about something that happened outside the US it won’t take in much at the box office.

And yes John, the cousin is the mail. :)

  14. I know it’s not out on DVD yet, but please, please, please (PLEASE!) you guys have to do a commentary for Superman Returns when it’s released. Only then will the circle be complete. Also, it will be hilarious.

    P.S. Great show today.

  15. I like Ellen too. There is something carefree and breezy about her stand-up style that I really like.

Having said that, I agree with John that the host should be from inside the movie industry. But why does it have to be a comedian? Any actor can host an awards show. It’s just another performance, with probably fewer unscripted jokes. George Clooney would be an ace choice.

  16. I love Ellen. She’s a very funny presenter, her show is enjoyable and I don’t really like chat shows at all. She’s able to think on her feet and she is incredibly entertaining, plus she did an amazing job in Finding Nemo. I don’t see why you hate her so much.

I think she’ll do a good job, she’ll make the oscars into a more human event rather than having a teleprompted robot up there.

  17. 1) New Site?
Will comment when I see it, but I’m sure we’re all gonna love it.

    2) The Hobbit
Don’t think I care who makes it, but like you guys said, as long as it’s done well. And as for Ian McKellan looking too old, look how young they made him and Patrick Stewart look in the latest X-Men. Computer effects can be used for things other than explosions and million man armies!

    3) Disney
Hell ya…Keep it coming folks. Good movies don’t hurt anyone, but bad movies hurt everyone (fans, studios, actors).

    4) Ben Affleck
He’s been making too much bad crap lately, and ya, Bennifer didn’t help. If only he’d just act in some good movies, to instill my confidence in him again. Matt Damon is looking as the better of these two actors.

    5) Mummy 3
Brandon Fraser is another underrated actor. But, to make this movie at this point, might just be desperation. I think the Mummy series is out of date, and it would be better to make Mr. Fraser the next Indiana Jones. Besides, Harrison Ford is too old for anything active at this point, but can’t you see the lineage? Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, and Brendan Fraser! (HA…I typed this before you guys spoke to it!)

    6) Tsunami Movie
No…We shouldn’t be making movies about actual events, because the story gets diluted, and in most cases, the truth gets a twisted spin (generally one sided). This tragic event won’t lead to a successful flick at the box office, simply for the fact that it doesn’t involve the American public (just being honest here). If it was a tsunami that devasted South Carolina instead of Polynasia, it would work better for the domestic box office numbers.

    7) Ellen Desgeneres
Ah, how can I be politcally correct here…There’s too much of a homosexual push out of Hollywood these passed couple years. Personally, I have no problem with her lifestyle choice (or that of anyone else) but with SO much being shoved down our throats, I don’t think it’s going to be a good show. The Oscars suck for more reasons than the host, though, starting with the fact that it runs SO FUCKING LONG!!! And who cares about the award for boom mike operator? Seriously? What’s with these awards the general public doesn’t want to see or care much about? If they deserve an Oscar, give it to them, and move on…They don’t get a speech.

    8) Casino Royale
Ah, not gonna be the best Bond ever, but the one with the best effects, sure…Daniel Craig is a great actor, but until I see the whole movie, won’t give this flick the credit until then. I’m just glad the Aston Martin is continuing as Bond’s car. Anything else is just wrong. Oh, and a smart talking (not just hot looking) Bond girl is a must.

    9) The Covenant
Haven’t had much chance to go, but it should be fun. I think a priority is Crank though. The dialogue is probably not gonna be a reason I watch this, so much as for the eye candy.

    10) Great show guys, and bring Bruxy back soon. Oh, and maybe the other guys.. :D

  18. are you serious henrik?

you fucking hate lesbians? “that goddamned dyke???

Not liking her because you don’t find her funny is all well and good but hating her because of her sexual orientation is every bit as bad as hating someone because they are black….

if you are you really serious you need to step out of the dark ages….

there are not many things uglier than bigotry…….

  19. Of the oscars I’ve seen, and I started watching it when American Beauty won best picture, my favorite host by far has been Steve Martin.

After Michael Moore went bananas on stage about the war and stuff his comment afterwards was hilarious.

“You should see it backstage, they’re trying to get Michael Moore in the trunk of his car its great!” I laughed my ass off.

Billy Crystal was alright. Whoopi, Rock was horrible. Horrible!

Jon Stewart was subpar, but he is charming. He could do it again I guess. Ellen Degeneres is out of left field, and so bad. I can’t believe it. There is a good chance I’m not watching it cause I fucking hate her. Is she big in the states at all? I can’t believe the choice.

I agree with John, that god damned dyke should stick to stinking up television. And I’m only saying it because I fucking hate lesbians, even more than I hate_fucking_lesbians.

  20. With your commentary suggestions I would like Roadhouse

A suggestion for a commentary would be any of Arnold’s classic 80’s movies. A good one would be “The Running Man” it has everything: violence, cheesy lines, dated special effects, Jesse Ventura, and best of all Richard Dawson. Plus everyone can do Arnold impersonations which is always good for at least 20 minutes of fun.

  21. jay again it continues..our differences of opinion……i fucking loved letterman when he hosted the oscars…he was hilarious..

these are not word for word but close….

“the big news is that steven speilberg, jeffery katzenberg and david geffen have all just joined forces to create their own studio dreamworks…so now instead of hoping they fail individually we can hope they fail collectively”

“you know someone once said that while an actor may give a performance it would be nothing without the poetry delivered to them by the screenwriters…well we just found that guy backstage and had the crap kicked out of him”

he was fantastic and I wish he would get to host it again…but he won’t..the uma oprah thing seems to be all anyone remembers but he was truly hilarious

  22. Bruxy – “Now you know what it’s like to be a pastor of a church.” Zing!

Doug – “I contend that Ben Affleck winning anything is proof that there is no God.” Zing!

    LOL. Good Show.

  23. Hey John,

You are soooo corrent on the lead actor in THE COVENENT, Steven S,

I pegged him out in SKY HIGH, I loved loved him in in that movie Warren Peace,(war and peace, get it) what a kool name, I can can see him as a breakout hit soon. I was hoping he would be pretty kool in this movie, and you pegged him out too. kool. anyway, good on ya , ok later man..

    Horns to the sky!!!

    Jarrod-D

  24. Don’t do another Spielberg project. Stanley Kubrick doesn’t get any love on this site, but if you want to do something that has an interesting subject matter and absolutely breathtaking visuals, how about the classic, CLASSIC movie – A Clockwork Orange. Or if you want it a bit more mainstream, Spartacus!

Conan the Barbarian has a pretty god damned amazing commentary track already with Ah-Nuld cracking jokes from start to finish, so if you do that one, there’s something to live up to…

  25. You guys could make any movie fun with your comkmentary. I love listening to audio commentaries, even if they’re for bad movies. It gives you some insight into what people think about everything, and you can compare them to your own thoughts. You guys shou;dn’t rule pout any movies, unless you really wouldn’t enjoy doing the commentary. Trust me. We’ll listen to anything you give us.
