  1. Bruxy was a great guest. More please.

My most looked forward to comic book movie might just be 300. 300 spartans versus 400,000 persians? Sin City style green screen backgrounds? Frank Miller?

    Sign me up.

  2. you batted it out of the PARK on Mel Gibson’s situation this time.
    Good on you, friends.

And I suddenly had a very scarrry ( for me ) thought about “Halo/Avotar”

We don’t know who the Halo Director will be, right? And Avotar is an effects-heavy movie set on alien worlds? I don’t remember hearing much else about Avotar…

..but John…is there any chance “Avotar” is a code name for Halo? And that James Cammeron has been coerced to do Halo?

a quick thought. I have to admit, if Cameron was ACTUALLY DOING it ( not bloody likely ) , it would take his career in a quite unexpected direction and inject some much needed cred into the Halo movie.

jsut to let you know, on the rvb website ( one of th elargest fan-halo sites out there, ) you have a display image…and of course, most members refer to their primary image, as with most other forums, as their “avotar”….

….what do we really KNOW about Avotar? I’m going back to read some posts on this matter. Figured I’d share this with you. And I do not think i’m right.

  3. I like Bruxy:)

And yeah, I’m a girl, I’m too young to remember Transformers at their height of popularity, but I’ll go see this flick. I can’t stand fucking chick flicks. Yuck.

  4. Can Bruxy Cavey be a regular? I was really laughing when he mentioned those Elijah steak knives and other freebies. funny stuff.

Also I can’t help but be a bit excited about the Transformers movie.
I’m not really looking forward to it but John talks about it with so much gusto that it’s getting to my head. I bet the Paramount people are really glad that they were able to patch things up with the movie blog. It’s already bringing in the hype so early in the game.

  5. I ahve to say that the comic book movie that I’m really looking forward to is 30 Days of Night. Vampires in Alaska great concept, awesome comic that will make a great transition to film.

  6. I’m predicting that Transformers will be like a Mission Impossible 3. It will make a lot of money, but not relative to expectations, and budget. People who are getting excited about this have to realize that nostalgia and the hardcore Transformer-cult that seemed to materialize in the past 5 years or so are not enough to make this film have the wide ranging appeal as something like Pixar or Pirates of the Carribean. I think the movie will cap out at $150 tops.

  7. Hey Dave,

I think they sudden drop in swearing had less to do with Bruxy’s appearance on the show (I call him a fucker all the time) as much as Doug’s absence from the show.

Darren and I just don’t swear that much. But in my opinion, I don’t think Doug’s language took anything away from the show at all. That’s just his personality… and his personality is funny as hell (at least to me).

    Cheers!

  8. Gee, a minister comes on, and there’s suddenly a content filter; the rate that the word “fucken” was employed dropped from 3/minute to none, and I didn’t hear one reference to anal fisting (a first!) There’s a word for this sort of sudden change in behavior that’s usually tossed at Christians (can you HYPOthesize what that word might be?), but it was such an enormous improvement in the quality of the show, I’ll keep it in my scabbard.

I’ve spoken to a dozen of my friends about the Transformer movie; I haven’t found one who will even consider seeing it. Of course, we’re mostly in our forties, so we probably don’t matter. Or maybe it’s just a Canadian thing.

    Thanks

    dave

  9. Great round table, John. Not only was Bruxy Cavey a worthwhile addition, but Darren was much funnier this week. He has been freed from Nagy’s shadow!

    – On the dark comic adaptations, I think a lot of that has to do with the arrested adolescence many of us are suffering from. Most of the films described as ‘dark’ aren’t really dark at all – it’s a kind of juvenile take on serious issues. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is dark. Apocalypse Now is dark. All The President’s Men is dark. Sin City is just a cartoon with some goth stylings.

    – Mel Gibson has strayed from his assigned path, and there are always people willing to (pardon the use of this word) crucify you when you do that. Tom Cruise will be next.

    – Transformers (sigh). I so want this film to be good, but I want it to be good for YOU, John! When all’s said and done, this is a Michael Bay film about toys, and I don’t think I can take the enormous empathetic disappointment I’m going to experience when you finally see it. My fingers are crossed, though…

  10. I’m glad to hear you have male friends that dream of taking their little ones to see Transformers ’cause I have the same goal!

My little boy will be almost 3 years old by the time it comes out and I’m hoping that it can be “our” movie…

  11. Bruxy Cavey was great! I hope he comes back.

Darren’s comment on Die Hard 4, “James Bond/Dumb” cracked me up.

Transformers is on top of my list of comic book movies to watch but Wonder Woman is up there.

  12. Bruxy Cavey was a nice surprise. I would concur that you should consider bringing him back sometime in the near future. I could understand why Wonder Woman would have more appeal (although I am NOT a Joss Whedon fan) – because the character is more iconic then say, Ghost Rider. Not everyone might know who Ghost Rider is, but they know Wonder Woman.

As for chicks in action roles- WRONG, The films (and actresses) were just bad. If you were right, explain Kill Bill to me one more time?

However, I am looking forward to Ghost Rider…which, since it;s this dude in leather and a flaming skull, the hero was tricked into a faustian pact…would this, despite the absurd PG-13 rating, be considered “dark”? And if people think a darker edge is better, explain the success of the Spider-Man films, the lightheartedness of Fantastic Four, how everyone raved up and down about Superman, and how Daredevil -which had its “darkness” didn’t do as well?

In any case, really good podcast.
My question, should I ask one, or comment, should I give one, will be a minute or less.
    I promise. That is…if there is something…

Tell you what, John. I’ll look through rumors and stories in the next day or so, and then I’ll ask your thoughts on the subject…other than “If you were asked to direct Halo, who would you cast and why?”…wait. That is a good question.

  13. Bruxy, you were great.

Borat will rock all. This is going to be one of the funniest movies ever. Probably the. The part where he is trying to learn how to joke, or when he walks by that lady and says nice, how much? And the part at the dinner table. Gosh, I cracked up. Looks great. Cant wait.

  14. Christian Bale, who plays Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming The Dark Knight had this to say about the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker: “Heath is very much into what [director] Chris [Nolan] had done with the first one and he’s very passionate about the role,” he told FilmFocus. “And he’s a really good actor so we’re going to see something very special from him.”

As for the Dark Knight: “I just love that title,” Bale told FilmFocus, “You know, nothing’s written in stone yet, but I like, very much, that it doesn’t have ‘Batman’ written in the title. This take on Batman of mine and Chris’ is very different from any of the others and everything else always had Batman in the title. I think this is kind-of distancing it even further and saying, ‘Hey, this is a whole different creature from what has come before.'”

  15. Ok I’ll admit that I was one of the people who thought maybe you should shut the Audio Edition down when Doug pulled a David Lee Roth and left to do his own thing. I take it all back. That Audio Edition was the best one in a long time.

Who knew that a show without 63 uses of the word Fuck could still be entertaining. HAHA, don’t misunderstand me I miss Doug, but the Audio Editon goes on stronger than ever

I think John is on drugs. Yeah Transformers will make a lot of money on opening weekend, but more than a hundred million? I just can’t see it.

    Darren is wise

Totally agree with you guys about the Mel Gibson thing

    Wonder Woman forever!

Great show guys. You have renewed my faith.

  16. Really enjoyed this Audio Edition, I’d like to throw my voice in with the previous folks who enjoyed both Darren’s and Bruxy Cavey’s contributions.

About your concerns about the Iron Man movie, I thought you might find it interesting that, in a recent interview (or maybe it was a panel at a comic convention), Jon Favreau said he is not opposed to using the alcoholism, but wants it to flow from the story. He said he is thinking of the movie in terms of a franchise and that he thought it would make more sense for the alcoholism to come up in a future movie (maybe the second one, I’m not sure) as a result of all of the Iron Man and business mogul lifestyle and stress, as opposed to just having it be a part of the character from the get go.

I don’t know if that is in keeping with the original character story, but I do like the idea. Perhaps in the first movie, while focusing more on the origin of Iron Man and the storyline with the Madarin, they’ll show him drinking a lot, but not actually struggling with alcoholism. Then it can become a more prominent part of the plot in the second movie, when they don’t have to worry so much about all the backstory baggage.

  17. That was one of the best Audio Editions ever. Very different from the ones with Doug for sure, but man this just worked!

I had my doubts that the show could continue without doug, but all doubts are gone!

Bruxy and Darren were fantastic. Have Bruxy back for sure. Are you shitting us? Is he REALLY a minister? He was great. John, you’re the man and still the best damn thing on the internet.

I’ll be sending a question for the next audio edition for sure.

  18. Great show, and Bruxy Cavey should definitely come back for more round tables. I’m one of the few who didn’t really like the solo podcast that much – more people means discussion, different view points, more chance for humour, etc.
Also when there’s chemistry between the hosts you can really tell that you guys are enjoying it as well.

I’m interested in seeing what future special guests will be like too – Bruxy, Darren and John had a different ‘flavour’ to Doug, Darren and John, but it still worked.

  19. Loved this edition of the AE. I liked Bruxy on the show, he should come back for more AE’s.

Like I said before it annoys me that the fact people care more about what a drunk Mel said then the fact the guy was drinking and driving. He should have he’s lisence suspended.

I feel the reason most of us like ”Darker” movies is because like Bruxy said it’s appeals to us, it’s more of a mystery. Batman Begins was dark but in a realistic way. When you go dark, you got to have it justified. I don’t want dark for the sake of it being dark. If the story is meant to be dark, then have it dark. Batman is dark so it was nesssary to go dark with it. I don’t feel this needs to be done with all superhero movies. I liked that F4 was light and fun. F4 should never be dark.

  20. Bruxy Cavey, please come back again. You were great and I LOVE the fact that a pastor is on the show. And a witty one at that (can I still get the John the Baptist Shower Curtains??)

I think the reason people like darker movies is because in darker movies you see a more intimidating evil. We want evil that FEELS evil with out being cheesy (see Blade Trinity for a cheesy villian). In the minds of most (and I tend to feel the same)darker=better…more real, more intense, more enjoyable.
