  1. A few comments about the topics:

    1. I never played Halo so I really not care about this projects. But it seems it has the potential to be the next Doom. Unfortunately…

    2. I think there has been some interesting and valid points made about this new censorship issue here in the blog, so I try to keep my opinions short.

I understand that this might not directly intervene with a regular viewers movie watching, but I think it’s pretty troublesome nevertheless. I think that if parents find that there’s material in a movie that they don’t want their kids to see, they should forget about that movie and find something else. I’m sure there’s enough kid friendly flicks out there that can be viewed without making any edits.
You don’t make edits to paintings, books, sculptures etc. after all. And there’s more than enough violence and nudity in those. Why should they have to edit films. Although I should mention that here in Europe they have been censoring home videos since VHS, but at least here in Finland they luckily stopped that in the 90’s. I think they still release edited versions in U.K… head butts especially are removed for some strange reason.

    4. I agree that budgets are too high nowadays… when you have a smaller budget you might have to be more inventive which can yield some interesting results. BTW: How much was the combined budget for all the LOTR films? I recall it was somewhere in the 350-400M range.
    That was money well spent.

    5. I actually liked both of the Pirates movies equally. Both of them reminded me of the Monkey Island series, which is my favourite computer game series ever (minus the fourth one). I can’t wait for the third one.

  2. John:

You were asking about a MemoKeys alternative for MacOS…

    http://www.typeit4me.com/

That program is similar in function although it does not seem to use shortcuts. Anyway… that is closest thing I could find.

Does your Macbook have heat problems? They seem to be running hot as demonstrated here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsSByFlh0wc&search=macbook

    =)

You also mentioned that you use the MemoKeys with passwords… that could be a security risk unless the program saves them in a secure way.

    – A.J.

  3. johnlan if that is the case I suggest you watch the trailer for her new film the quiet..it looks delightfully sleazy…..

and I love youf final summation about the whole issue….the country music comparison…that really spells it out…if you are offended by beautiful bouncing boobs and a film contains them then htat film was not for you…if you don’t like swearing and a film contains swearing then the film was not for you…

I don’t like films that star angelina jolie but i aint gonna demand the studio digitally replace her with someone I prefer so I can watch it……films starring her are just not for me….

  4. John you’re still missing the point.

You are looking at this matter simply as ‘what harm is it for Christians to want watered down versions of explict movies?’ People like myself are stepping back and seeing a much bigger picture here. A serious danger.

This GIVES them an air of authenticity. It is fine to cut down movies for scenes and subject that are offensive to their beliefs. As I wrote, sex toys are illegal in Alabama. It began with an obscenity law. Sure, we don’t want some old guy flashing little kids or sexual harassment; makes sense. But then by opening that door, we get jail time for dildo sales. There is no check and balances for this type of notion. THERE NEVER WILL BE. Once that floodgate is open John, there is no closing it. Take Social Security numbers as an example. When they were first introduced, we were promised by our government that these number would not be used for personal ID. Well… we all know how that promise went.

You keep repeating, we’re telling them – this is the only way to view it, or nothing at all. Dude, that’s art. An artist fabricate his/her vision into 3D form; be it on canvas, clay, celluloid, wood, steel and light. What is made is to be seen, interpreted in different ways? YES. But that craft is meant to exist in one fashion ONLY. The intended construct. Period. Would you demand Salvador Dali to stop painting surreal images and switch to more wholesome pictures like Norman Rockwell? He’ll probably give you the finger and them some.

You can’t take a Christian bible and decide to take out passages and pages saying it offends your agnostic beliefs and still call it a Christian bible. There would be a furor over the butchering. Yet to do the same with a feature is perfectly right?

Not everybody can be everything. I can never be an astronaut, I’m near sighted. I can never be a plumber, I don’t want to work with other people’s crap. But for some crazy reason, we think this can be. A perfect example is female firefighters. Yes, I’m lifting from comedian Bill Maher.

Female firefighters have a different criteria than men. They don’t need to lift or carry as much to pass. I make NO excuse. I do not want some petite girl trying to pull me out of fire, but can’t since she’s not built for the task, but is there because of equality laws. FUCK NO! Is it to say that all women can’t be firefighers, no. Look at China (Joanie Laurer), she could kick my as everyday without breaking a sweat. She most definitely could be a firefighter. Taking that setting out, she would make one scary person to meet if she was angry. Well, that and an angry Christopher Walken. Try imagining him at the base of your bed. You wake up in the middle of the night and see him, very pissed at you. Either him or Grace Jones. *shutter* I ain’t ashamed, I’d by crying.

What does it mean? Not everybody can be everything. Movies have a locked-in reality. If you don’t like it, no one forcing you to watch it; then it was NOT meant for you. I dislike country music, it’s not for me. But I’m not gonna demand cuts to lyrics and sheets to make it more palatable. Why should I? This is no different. Do you understand?

This isn’t about furnishing a minority anemic flicks. No. It does effect us all of us. And will bite us in the ass a lot sooner than later, make no mistake about.

  5. tangents john…..just tangents of conversations…..

the tangent I am on stems from another guy who said he would love to see scarface if the swearing and sex is cut out as he is a christian.
and I just wanted to know how come the possibility of a few tits and (granted a lot) of swearing puts him off buy the graphic extreme violence doesn’t……and that lead me to the ridculous situation with the janet jackson boob thing. I am not saying it was a good thing to have happen but any night of the week you can see a hell of lot worse..every single night…..television violence is at an all time high yet show a boob and there is hell to pay.

again if i had to choose between showing my son a pair of tits or scene of murder…I would show him the tits. to me violence seems more offence than sex yet that just does not seem to be the case…

I am in no way telling people what they should think. I totally believe you should be able to do watch what you want.As long as it doesn;t hurt anyone you should be able to watch whatever you want. Violence…porno….whatever.

But I don’t think studios should be forced to make special cut editions for people though. If they WANT to fine but they shouldn’t HAVE to. Part of the problem is telling a director that they’re film will also have to have a clean version made. TV versions and Airplane versions don’t seem as bad as they are just part of the whole deal and hacve been for years……

making clean versions for certain people well not many film makers are going to see this as anything other than some kind of forced censorship. At first anyway….when it gets introduced I think there will be some kind of stink about it but over time it will become standard. I have no doubt this is something that will become the norm…..but it will have to go past the DGA and WGA……its a pretty big deal if it happens…but there is money to be made so I have no doubt at all….

and again john In no way was I trying to tell anyone what to think…I just want someone to explain to me whay a majority of christians seem to think anything sexual on film or t.v. is pornographic yet violence seems to be fine.

    thats all.

  6. I’d hate to interupt the scuabble here kids… but what does any of that have to do with a person having a right to view edited material in their own homes that doesn’t efect what any of the rest of us watch?

And cater… be careful dude… I’m with you on the view of Nudity. But if we cross the line into telling other people what THEY should think… then we’re just as bad as the people who chastise. Don’t you think?

  7. johnlan dont you realise that an adult person masterbating in the privacy of their own home is contributing to the downfall of society….and quite possibly helping the terrorists?

sex is dirty and evil….especially between members of the same sex….and definitely when it is between a man and woman and inanimate object….

and we definitely should not teach children anything about sex at all…I mean I would rather they knew nothing about it whatsoever …have no idea how to be safe about just in case they wind up in a sexual situation I feel much better knoiwing that they don;t know anything about safe sex….just teach them abstinance..that will stop them

Sex is disgusting and perverted…and evil.
In fact there should be some kind of sex sub clause slipped into the patriot act.

The greatest thing I have ever heard is john ashcroft comissioning someone to make a dress to cover lady liberty’s dirty love pillows…..I mean with all the bad things happening in the world today I am just gald to see somone has their priorities right….

shame he is gone now…..what an american…..

  8. Sealer:

“No, it isn’t fact. It is opinion. They are not the ones “in power”. If they were, then everything you just wrote would be fact: End of nudity. End of Profanity. End of violence. See that happening, where it all just comes to a screeching halt? In addition, why do you equate the FCC with the Christian right? Also, are you saying that those with religious convictions aren’t free thinkers? According to the New Testament, how did those in ‘authority’ see Jesus? Why did they crucify him? They saw him as a free thinker.”

My “in power” comment was these religous organizations have a dominate voice in the Christian gestalt. They are the ones who have organized national rallies vs. some getting to together in similar protest, but not really related. And going back. No. Sir, this is fact. It has been made abundant and most straightforward, that they do want the end of all perceived sin. I’m a sinner and proud of it, I also think for myself and even though I’m an atheist I still have morals. Freaky huh?

He’s yet another example of Christian disgust in the state of Alabama it is illegal to sell a dong and vibrators – marital aid devices. Do it *giggle giggle* can get you a year of incarceration and a $10,000 fine. Why is this any of their business? And yet you say this isn’t fact? How about this, Ralph Davenport (Republican), South Carolina want to add sex toys to the states current obscenity laws. Excuse me? There isn’t anything better to do?

I can think of a few. Help the homeless. Ahhhhhh, repairing the state’s highway and roadway infrastructures. Better education for kids, less reliance on test taking and more on real world application. Lets not fool ourselves, the current curriculums is pretty much making kids to enter the workforce as cogs. “No Child Left Behind” is one of the worst ideas to ever get passed. In order for that to work for the dumbest of kids, education gets lowered – watered down. I know this, from my high school days. Greg, I can’t recall his last name. This guy should not be in high school. He was a punk who could was illiterate. He belonged back in junior high, hell maybe even elementary. But here he is. Grand. Worse yet Mexicans in high school, they couldn’t speak english. Don’t get all name callin’ I’m hispanic, born in Tijuana. Mom’s Mexican, dad’s American.

  9. sealer – they helped it by going in their fucking droves to watch a film I consider to be pornographic in its violence. What was the point of the film other than try and push an agenda of catholic guilt….the film said absolutley nothing about christianity or jesus. it was a sickening display of religous lunacy.

and at the time of its release there was push by religious organizations to get the rating lowered so children could go and see it…they wanted it showen to school children…It was all over the news at the time…..I saw heads of various churches being interviewed at the time and they were bombarding the MPAA with complaints about its rating being to high. I didn’t mean gibson wanted it lowered…..

The Passion of the Christ was a demented load of poorly acted tripe made by a fucking lunatic. A borderline holocaust denier…..

thinking about now though if you wanted to take a message from it I guess you could surmise that jews are evil…..pilate wasn’t all that bad…and if it wasn’t for the jews jesus would never have been through all that….

and as for the jackson boob thing the FCC had to react like that because the so called moral majority got so fucking irate about it….and my whole point was that it was that you can turn the channel over to see murders and violence yet a half obscured flash of a nipple caused an outrage…..go watch any music channel and watch a few nusic videos……you see things worse than that…..

personally like I said I love both sex and violence but I find scenes of violence to be more cause for alarm than I do a tittie shot…..especially when it comes to what children get to see

every single night of the week there is some kind of how to guide of murder on television yet a boob is shocking……

  10. John, I don’t know about a Mac version of the software you’re looking for, but I had never heard of this until you mentioned it. I just downloaded it and it ROCKS! Thanks for letting me know about memo keys. I used to have about 4 different text documents on my desktop that I just copy and pasted wherever I needed it. No more!
    Thanks again.

    haha, Awesome!

  11. Sorry John…5 mins. into the show and I couldn’t digest the fact that Douglas wasn’t with us. Therefore had to actually close the Podcast. Sorry…

  12. Great AE, even without Doug. However, it sure got quiet in the room.
I’ll admit that “knowwhatimean’ and ‘that’s fucking retarded!” and…”Int’l friends I whatever whater salute you” is missed for even one time.

As to the charge that he isn’t funny and nothing but profanity, I don’t think that’s always the case. One or two days he may flat out stink and be annoying. Other audio editions, he’s spot on.

As for the long, long LONG discussion on Halo: I wonder if they’ll reach out to Christophe Gans, who helmed ‘Silent Hill’. But you y’know something? I…never got worked up over this possible Halo feature, simply because even though they threw out some serious money at Weta and would use Jackson’s name for street credit, it really meant nothing to me.

First, at some point some guys are going to have to lose helmets. I don’t want a fucking Power Rangers movie in shiny armor. I don’t want faceless, expressionless helmets doing the talking. Second, without a director even considering the project, without even an actor onboard or in talks then in my POV, there is but one conclusion: ALL THE ABOVE. Writers were hired, told what to write, they wrote it, got paid. The Bungi folks loved it even though it is a piece of crap and they refuse to change it. Peter Jackson knows it is crap; he won’t direct it, but hey—the FX are going to be good and it gets WETA more exposure. It’s not unusal for a film to be a crapfest but the FX wizards still get to bake in the sun.

Nobody’s interested…except Bungi. They want to move forward, and they get all the artwork, storyboards, everything done…and I ask: it’s not like the good old days where you can get John Badham or a director like that who is simply a studio director for a “studio” picture, and just come on down.

I don’t think they’d get Uwe Boll- although if they did, then after Halo flops, nice guy Boll will be out of his usual excuses : no budget, no studio support, no gaming support. Then he goes DTV where he belongs.

Now, if I were the cap’n of this ship?

    1. Grab up a chunk full of the following folks in parts : Ray Park, Thomas Ian Griffith, Jonny Messner, Dolph Lundgren, Oliver Gruiner, Cynthia Rothrock, Marc Dacascos, Ken Shamrock…whoever you can get. In short, any pile of B movie action stars or would be action stars. Chuck Norris could lead them. Whatever. HALO is the title; who is in is not an issue. Especially if they wear visor helmets in 50% of the movie.

    2. Directors: I’d put my two cents on Gans. If he’s not doing anything right now…
next choices, in order: Neil Marshall. Renny Harlin, Alex Witt (RE 2) and Francis Lawrence (Constantine). Or you can wait for Michael Bay. [and maybe they ARE waiting on some director right now]

    3. Fuck Halo 3. Get this motherfucker made, haul ass, stop pissing around. Have a diffrent VG: HALO THE MOVIE VIDEO GAME. They’d do it anyway.

    4. Lots of gratuitious violence, but let’s have a story and a suspense device or two.

    On Supey:

We really didn’t need Supey returns. And I don’t know where that money all went to either. Must have given a chunk to that plane sequence, or the estate of Marlon Brando. As to WB doing a sequel? Yeah, but only ONLY if Supey is fighting someone other than Luthor, the kid is really a bad seed and not of Supey’s loins…and at least in the next one, besides the Williams theme, we don’t need nostalgia for the Donner Supey. Finally, recast Lois Lane or write her out. That’s right! Give Supey a new love! He’s got all the damn groupies! Eenie meenie…miney and moe…can I suck on any of thier toes? World’s a big place Supey. Find some chick who wanks to screw your alter ego Clark Kent, take a risk, tell her the truth. She don’t like it, kiss her and she forgets. Walla!

Come to think of it…why don’t Supey just bang ’em all? With one kiss, they forget! Holy crap! He’s populated the world with Superkids!

    Ha Ha Ha Ha

    ;**************:
    To Get Carter:

“What gets me about these people who want clean versions of films is they are all bent out of shape about the possiblity of seeing a pair of tits yet they helped make a film that was 2 hours of a guy getting tortured and stab and whipped and beaten a huge box office hit and they actually fought to have that films rating lowered….”

They ‘helped’ Mel Gibson make his film the way he made it? They ‘actually fought’ to have the rating lowered? Says who? Gibson asked help only with historical and theological accuracy; nobody forced him to but subtitles in the movie. Gibson accepted the R rating, did not fight it.

It should also be pointed out that the film is not just about Jesus being scourged- it’s about why, and there is a lot more to the movie than just this. Religion aside, it is wonderfully shot, acted, written (it is an adaptation) and the makeup FX were, of course, put to good use. It is ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’, whether you believe in Christ or not.
It’s a story most people are familiar with, whether you believe or not.

“I mean janet jacksons boob BARELY gets seen on t.v. and it caused a nationwide outcry…the fact that I even heard about it halfway around the world amazes me….”

Why are we equating the FCC with the Far Christian Right? Also, it is THE SUPER BOWL. People are not expecting such things. It is televised in the US and even abroad. There are people, with thier families, watching at home. That said, in that Super Bowl, I wasn’t surprised to see tit action: also during the halftime show, you had the antics of Nelly and Kid Rock; during that entire Superbowl, how many ads for erectile dysfuction? Were they preparing us for something to come?

    To Jonlan:

“Christians (extremist, but they’re the ones who have the power) want the end of sex, profanity and promiscuity from television, radio, movies, music, art and internet – period. This isn’t a lession in hypotheticals. This is FACT. This ruling would’ve been yet another nail in the free-thinkers coffin.”

No, it isn’t fact. They saw him as a free thinker.

” Yes. Two actual, legitimate complaints”
Fair enough. So just dismiss those two legit complaints with the rest?

“As for airplane edition of films, a bit of info. It’s common for directors to remove their names from those versions, that should speak VOLUMES about this topic.”

This is true, but keep in mind that the FAA is not equated with censorship nor the ‘right’. The reason why directors sometimes take thier names off thier films in airline versions is not because of removal of sex, violence and profanity. The FAA generally chooses PG rated movies that require less editing of such things. The films are usually cropped (1:33) to fit a screen. The films are edited for scenes of peril.

By the way, do you know what child pornography is? You quote 47 U.S.C. 2256- but you highlight one aspect of it and blow it out of proportion. All of those guidelines must be counted, not just one.

  13. Actually, I dont find Doug that funny. I never laughed at his opening lines. Sure, they make me laugh sometimes, but the opening lines really suck and I dont understand what’s funny about them. Great show, BTW :)

  14. Whats with the Doug haters? wtf? John is the straight man to Doug, while I didnt mind a solo edition because John has enough movie insight to carry it, Doug brings the funny.

I have to be interested in the topic to listen to John, Doug could talk about dirt and I would listen.

    Viva Le Doug!!!

    nord

  15. John,

Listening to the latest version of your show and the discussion of editing “family friendly” versions of films. Your words. The problem becomes who decides what is “family friendly?” Isn’t it bad enough that the MPAA already does a terrible and inconsistent job rating movies already that we need another group, organization or something of the like determining what is family friendly and what isn’t? The MPAA is much harsher on some things, sex for example, than they are on, say violence or drug use. Requiem for a Dream is a good example. What the studio ended up asking, or rather demanding, Darren Aronofsky cut from the NC-17 version to make it an R was mere seconds and ultimately inconsequential to the overall movie. The reason I know this is that I watched the NC-17 rated and a Blockbuster copy that clearly stated at the beginning it had been altered to be an R rated version. That said that brings up your gratuitous tit shot of Hallie Berry in Swordfish. You’re right, it is there just for the sake of showing her tits. Now that’s my opinion and your opinion, but to someone else it may or may not be, regardless of how right “we think” we are. That’s the issue! Who is going to decide? If studios and/or filmmakers want to make a version they deem appropriate for “family” consumption to reach a larger audience so be it as they do already for airlines and so on, that’s business. Plain and simple. It’s up to the artists and those who distribute it, not anyone else. Not even the MPAA. They can only suggest what it will that to reach and certain rating, even though it will cost studios in the end and most will cave for bigger profits, some are (rarely) though brave enough to release what the artists intended all along. Again I refer to, Requiem for a Dream. But for you or I or some arbitrary company/group/government/whoeber to make decisions on what is appropriate and what’s not will lead to more censorship. I know we live in a society in which censorship is alive and well. Let’s just agree that the more opportunities and power we give to others over “creative” content is not and will never be a good thing.

  16. As an aside, I notice a rival film site – let’s call them ‘Aren’t I Cuddly News’ – has posted a pretty harsh lambasting of ‘Lady In The Water’. Given your feelings about the Sham Hammer, I thought you might want to check it out. ‘Unadulterated shite’ is a phrase you don’t hear often enough…

  17. I loved the solo edition, John, although it was a little weird to be wandering around on my smoking break with another man’s voice in my head. Reminded me of my brief flirtation with psychosis…

I’m going to agree with Henrik and say the roundtables are my favourite. I see you as the Yang, Doug as the Yin, and Darren as the calm centre who stops the squabbling with a sensible comment.

P.S. I’m not familiar with the program you’re using, but I’ve always found http://www.pure-mac.com a handy starting place for shareware and utilities. Apple’s own site has a decent amount of software, too. And remember: Apple is the good side, John – that’s why their stuff is so pure and white!

  18. It IS a slippery slope, not a theory. This isn’t a what-if, or a maybe situation. The sentiment has been made crystal clear, Christians (extremist, but they’re the ones who have the power) want the end of sex, profanity and promiscuity from television, radio, movies, music, art and internet – period. This isn’t a lession in hypotheticals. This is FACT. This ruling would’ve been yet another nail in the free-thinkers coffin.

Good example, Get Carter. The episode in question was “Our Sons And Daughters”, aired November 6th, 2003 and repeated on December 31st, 2004. It is the repeat that is being fined not the original broadcast.

The FCC is wanting CBS and its 111 affiliates to pay a $3.63 million fine for indecency. Following me? All right then. The FCC received 4,211 complaints over that episode of “Without A Trace”. Ok?

How many people who complained actually saw the program in question? Drum roll please… two. Yes. Two actual, legitimate complaints. Where did all those filings come from? Why they came from the “American Family Association” and the “Parents Television Council”. So, let me get this straight, John. There isn’t any kind of slippery slope here? Giving them the right to legally sell watered down movies is of no concern???

The argument about films being edited for TV is moot, they have to be, but for the most part the situations remain. I remember when I was a little kid, ABC was airing “The Shining”. The scene where Jack Nicholson finds the nude woman in the bath tub. When it aired she was still naked, her body blured out. But there is no mistake about her being all natural. CleanFlicks, Play It Clean Video and CleanFilms probably if they haven’t already, just deleted it out.

Here’s another example. Lets say I’m an abstract artist, I have built this massive centerpiece for a building. It’s pretty, different colored metal shapes. I get a call from the someone, NOT the owner of the building, a patron who says from a certain angle my artwork takes the shape of a nude women, complete with perk nipples. I reply by saying you need to be laying on your back near the base, looking at a certain direction to even see the outline. That person demands me to change it. I state that I put in the female form on purpose, a message – beauty in chaos. No one is asking you to see this nude woman. No one is forcing you to lay on your back, peering that inclination. Just don’t look at it. it wasn’t meant for you. Is it fair to have that person demand it be taken down when no one else who have seen it, let alone all those who have passed by the artwork have complained?

As for airplane edition of films, a bit of info. It’s common for directors to remove their names from those versions, that should speak VOLUMES about this topic.

Funny you should mention that on the podcast. Child pornography as defined by 47 U.S.C. 2256:

Any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture, whether made or produced by electronic, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where:

    (A) the production of such visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct;
    (B) such visual depiction is, or APPEARS TO BE, of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct;
    (C) such visual depiction has been created, adapted, or modified to appear that an identifiable minor is engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or
    (D) such visual depiction is advertised, promoted, presented, described, or distributed in such a manner that conveys the impression that the material is or contains a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Why bring this up? Movies such as “The Girl Next Door”, “American Pie”, “My Tutor”, “Fast Time At Ridgemount High”, “Crazy/Beautiful”, “Detroit Rock City”, “Empire Records”, “Heathers”, “Risky Business”, [insert horror movie title] CAN BE considered child pornography. Don’t dismiss this! All of these films fall within the U.S. law. And you can’t tell me with a straight face, that Christian groups are not watering in the mouth waiting for this hammer to hit. Don’t be naive.

And unless I’m mistaken (could be) wasn’t it those very same concern organizations the very some ones who demanded some kind protection for children… the V-Chip. Why are they not using it? It’s friggin’ idiots on parade. By the way, CBS is fighting the fine, they better win, common sense needs to prevail.

  19. I saw Dead Man’s Chest yesterday and I really liked it. Granted, the script was all over the place but as an action-adventure movie it really delivered. I actually liked the characterizations… I re-watched the first movie couple of days ago and I think this movie is a pretty good continuation character-wise. The Jack Sparrow of the Pirates 1 never seemed a “good man” to me. He seemed to do some selfless deeds, but I think he always had an ulterior motive.

I did not mind the slapstick in the sword fights, although the choreography was not the best. It wasn’t that special in the first one either.

The music was pretty much in the same vein as in the first, even though the composer is different. Couple of okay themes, but that’s about it.

The special effects were top-notch… especially Davy Jones.

All in all, a great summer movie. I’m eagerly waiting for the next one. This movie reminded me of the LucasArts’ Monkey Island games which is definitely a good thing.

  20. This was an interesting audio edition – it’s definately a different flavor when Doug’s not around and that’s not a bad thing.

I’ve finally seen Dead’s Man Chest and it was nothing to write home about. The first one wasn’t my favorite movie of all time but I enjoyed it more than this drivel.

As for Vince Vaughn doing a political thriller. I say “Why not?” As you’ve said the guy seems to be doing one dimensional buddy comedies so this is a welcome change.

  21. hey john good audio audition, on the whole censorship issue, why either release a speacil couple dollars more dvd with both versions, or a cheaper version of the edited version

  22. This has its charm.

My favourite AE’s by far are the so-called roundtables, since 3 guys just creates a far more interesting and unpredictable dynamic. I guess it also helps that Darren Conley is a bit more mysterious, so his opinions are a bit more fresh – it is unavoidable but on alot of issues you pretty much know what either you or Doug Nagy is going to say…

However that being said, I did enjoy this more than I thought I would. When somebody is allowed to talk without interruption, sometimes things get fleshed out in a more understandable way, and while it may be less entertaining, it has other strengths – and it does have a certain amount of charm to hear somebody talk alone. You almost made it feel like you were abandoned and waving the flag up high all by yourself.

In short, I enjoyed it… Even if you did pretty much just rehash your own posts ;)

Oh btw. I don’t get mentioned by name on the AE anymore? I think I was the guy who commented on your stand on the Vince Vaughn thing. ;)

  23. what gets me about these people who want clean versions of films is they are all bent out of shape about the possiblity of seeing a pair of tits yet they helped make a film that was 2 hours of a guy getting tortured and stab and whipped and beaten a huge box office hit and they actually fought to have that films rating lowered….

on other threads here there was a christian who said he has always wanted to see scarface but the swearing and sex stops him….

oh a pair of tits and foul language puts you off but guys getting chainsawed…hung of choppers…stabbing, shootings etc the endless stream of violence doesn’t faze him…

again I ask why are christians so bent out of shape about sex…

they claim to be pro life yet show someone in the act of making it on screen they want it banned…..kill and slaughter people to your hearst delight and they don’t seem to care…..

I mean janet jacksons boob BARELY gets seen on t.v. and it caused a nationwide outcry…the fact that I even heard about it halfway around the world amazes me….a fucking boob for a split second yet at the very minute that was seen you could have changed the channle and seen see csi, svu, law and order etcetera etcetera…..stabbings and shootings….gore and blood….graphic details of how a serial murderer kills their victims yet the only time I have heard a complaint from the christian right about any of these show was when without a trace dared to use a teen orgy as subject matter….if the story had been about a room of teens being viciously murdered ..nothing would have been said…but we can;t dare suggest teens might be having sex…..i mean we don;t even want to teach them how to do safely if they are going to do..we just want to teach abstinance…condoms do not exist…..

what is it about sex they don’t like?
why do they make it sound like it is all dirty and filthy and any visual medium involving it is pornographic….

look i like both…sex and violence but if i was to pick one that my son saw I would take a pair of tits over a guy being whipped and tortured for 2 hours any day of the week…..

  24. hi john
a very intelligent podcast but missed doug, i really like the straight guy/funny guy format anyway.your a funny guy in your own way,but doug cracks me up (i love profanity). on the subject of editing movies for mormons and such like, why not include an option on dvd to play the film without nudity etc.
i’m sure the did this for cannibal holocaust when it was released to play the movie without the animal butchering scenes.
keep up the good work john.

  25. What the fuck is all this Nagy doesnt have enough film background?!? You don’t need a fucking PHD to talk about movies..or even fucking books or literature for that matter! Just because Nagy isn’t an indie filmbuff with a complete knowledge of foreign art films, doesn’t mean he can’t comment on present day American cinema. Just because the man is fucking both your mother and your girlfriend/hand, doesnt mean you have a right to criticize his knowledge on film..and even if Campea’s documentary was a gay film starring Nagy, he would have still made one movie..how many movies have you made?

  26. Awwwwwww, poor John. Still, it proves you’re not one of those pussies who won’t try things without his friends…….and you didn’t shout because you didn’t have anybody to shout at.

I’ll dub this one ‘the lonely edition’ and very nice it was too.

  27. Campea, your great.
    Nagy, your the man.
    Conley, awesome.
It can only be the three. Nothing else.
I would still listen to it. But it would lose its pizzaz.

  28. Didn’t really miss Doug too much, but did miss Darren, Darren actually knows about movies. The round tables are great, could do with or without Nagy’s crazy cusswords.. by the way… Saw Conan for the first time the other day and it SUCKED.

  29. –> Nagy free and LOVIN’ IT!

Doug Nagy doesn’t have enough of a film background to hold his own in a half hour long movie chat podcast. He barely even has enough of a comedy background to hold his own in a ‘your mama joke’ contest let alone a half hour chat podcast.

All Nagy seems to have a background in is yelling his loopy profanities in a squeaking girlish giggle while spitting all over the microphone.

John Campea, on the other hand, is a genius. He’s only 42 and he’s already directed his first movie, ‘Prince of Penis/God of War’ I don’t know what it’s about. But I assume it’s a gay porno starring Doug Nagy. (Apparently he has a big cult following among the humorless miltant Toronto gay crowd. Way to cash in, John)

  30. i just listened. it wasnt as good as with Doug but was still quite good. distinct lack of “Thats just retarded” though from Doug whilst talking about the Halo movie.

  31. Wow that was a totally different show than the regular AE. I loved it though.

Come back quick Doug, but it he’s ever busy, don’t worry about doing it yourself John, I really enjoyed it.

Microsoft has screwed everything up with the Halo movie. What the hell are they waiting for? I hope directors aren’t blacklisting this movie or something because I think it would be so badass! Imagine the job WETA could do with it!

  32. I’m only about 10 minutes into the show but I had to comment.

It’s actually interesting hearing just john. Totally different flavor. I like it (not more than with Nagy or Conly).

But there is a distinct lack of “FuckAss” and “CockShit”. I suddenly feel cold.

Awsome show so far John, I’m going back to listen to the rest now.
