Audio Edition – January 6th 2006

Today on The Audio Edition Doug and I discuss the 2006 Bloggies Awards (hint hint… go vote for the Audio Edition as Top Podcast), the new Superman Returns pics and the fact that it looks like those rumours of the studios wanting to digitally REDUCE Brandon Routh’s package were TRUE, Jon Stewart getting the gig and the Host of this year’s Oscars, the J-Lo movie getting canned (Yay!), the new rumours of Adrian Broody playing The Joker in the upcoming Batman Begins sequel and a new proposed law that would force theaters to actually advertise when the MOVIE actually starts, rather than when the commercials start. All this and a few things more.

  1. for all the money Brad Pitt has lost for hollywood,, he’s lucky to be even working!

Troy was a huge letdown for hollywood and Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve were ensemble pieces. I’ll count Mr and Mrs Smith as a movie that he anchored but he still had Angelina for that one.

  2. Hey Jack…

ummm… bankable doesn’t mean “bankable from brith”. Pitt was not always bankable. No actor was ALWAYS bankable. Nor will Pitt be bankable forever. But as of right now… with 4 $100 million dollar hits in the last couple of years (something J-Lo never has… nor ever will do)… then yes… Pitt is bankable.

  3. “People don’t want to see J-Lo’s films”? Are you kidding?

If that were true, lopez wouldn’t be in the movies at all. Her movies would be like Woody Allen movies, attended by few people. I think you’re confusing “people” with yourself. You don’t want to see J-Lo’s movies, and the box office shows you’re wrong.

if you’re going to play it that way, J-Lo is much more succesful than Brad Pitt. Considering all of Pitt’s failures, i wonder why he didn’t turn into box office poison. Why are you saying he’s bankable considering all his failures from ’95-’01?

Just look his filmography up in box office mojo and see how pathetic it is. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=bradpitt.htm

I”m too lazy to write you each one of the titles and compare the budget to the gross.

  4. Hey Jack,

    Gigli

Cost: $74 million to make and market

    Made: $6 million

Total: A Loss of $68 million

    Jersey Girl

Cost: $50 million to make and market

    Made: $25 million

Total: A Loss of $25 million

    Enough

Cost: $68 million to make and market

    Made: $40 million

Total: A Loss of $28 million

    Angel Eyes

Cost: $75 million to make and market

    Made: $24 million

Total: A loss of $51 million

    Unfinished Life

Cost: $38 million to make and market

    Made: $8 million

Total: A loss of $30 million

All of these are just from the last few years

People don’t want to see J-Lo’s films. Does that mean she’s “poison”? I don’t know that I’d go that far… but her presence in a film doesn’t help it at all. That much is clear.

Why are you comparing her to other male actors? What does that have to do with anything??? Besides, I’ve alread said (in this forum AND on the Audio Edition several times) that name power does not draw people like it used to. So why are you arguing a point with me that I have already myself made????

It’s like I’m saying “THE SKY IS BLUE” and then you come running along saying “NO IT’S NOT… THE SKY IS BLUE”

There you go again putting words in my mouth arguing points with me that I NEVER MADE. I NEVER said having a $100 million dollar film MADE you a bankable star… NEVER.

What I DID say, was that you at LEAST have to have that to claim to have the title of “Bankable”.

Did I say Washington was a “Bankable Star”? No.

Did I say Ford was a bankable star? No.

I have said over and over again that “Bankable stars” are fewer and further between then they have ever been in history.

Tom Hanks is a bankable star

Since 1998 he has 8 films that highlight his name break $100 million

Brad Pitt is a bankable star

Since 2000 he has 4 films break $100 million that feature him

What makes an actor “Bankable” is that people will put down their money at the boxoffice to see them. If you can’t feature a film that at LEAST breaks $100 million… then how can you claim “bankability”? You can’t.

Actors like Washington, Ford and Clooney bring great talent to the table (something every critic on the planet agrees J-Lo has none of), but that talent sadly doesn’t mean they’re bankable (although I wish it did).

I have always said that there ARE SOME bankable stars still out there… but not nearly as many as there used to be… but good taste, and simple math all point to one unshakable truth…

J-Lo is NOT a “bankable star” as you called her.

  5. using Christopher Lee isn’t a fair example since he wasn’t the star of those 7 movies. So you’re saying Christopher Lee is a “bankable star” then? Sure he was in Star Wars ROTS, AOTC, LOTR, and Sleepy Hollow, but he played small roles in those movies or were part of an ensemble. I’m pretty sure NO producer wants Christopher Lee as the star of their movie. He isn’t even a star anymore, just a guy that plays bit parts. J-LO is usually one of the lead actors in her movies, and so she gets more credit if a movie succeeds or fails.

can you call a person like Orlando Bloom a bankable star? Sure he’s been in many hit movies, but he was again part of ensembles. And he was doing mainly sfx movies which don’t depend on star power or even acting power as much. Movies like LOTR are special effects vehicles, and no one cares about the actors. Your argument that you need to have a 100 million dollar hit to qualify as a hit maker is seriously flawed.

Speaking of male actors,I will use Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and George Clooney as examples. Denzel hasn’t been in a 100 mil+ hit in a long time. In fact, he only has 2 on his entire resume. http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=denzelwashington.htm

But he’s consistant so he commands those 20 million paychecks.

Brad Pitt is another star that for a long time didn’t have any hits. From ’95 to ’01, Pitt didn’t have one single hit movie. One movie failed after another repeatedly, usually earning between 30-60 million. He didn’t headline a hit movie til Mr and Mrs Smith. Troy counts as an underperforming movie, and Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve were ensemble pieces. But I grant that those 2 movies were star driven, not sfx like the LOTR was.

  6. john,

I wouldn’t say J-Lo is box office poison either. She’s fairly consistant, and her movies generally make more than their budget. This is more than i can say of many of today’s male movie stars.

  7. Hey Jack,

Wow… you really don’t know what you’re talking about do you? I have, on MANY occasions pointed out that BOTH Cage and Willis are no longer bankable names. Do you even listen to the whole shows or just read the notes and then put up your pointless comments???? Just curious.

Also… as far as Lopen goes… she has ZERO films that have crossed the $100 million dollar mark. By almost everyone’s definition, the $100 million dollar line is today’s standard of a “hit”.

Once again, you didn’t listen to what I said about her. I said.. .and quote:

“At worst her films bomb, and at best they fail to meet the studios expectations”. Just look up the articles in variety and you’ll notice that both Monster In Law and Wedding Planners had the studios budgeting over $120 million each from Box office totals domestically. She has never once met expectations. ZERO films over the $100 million mark HARDLY defines her as a “bankable star”.

Hell, Christopher Lee has 7 films that have all made over $100 million in just the last 4 years. So don’t talk to me about Lopez being a “Bankable Star” with no legitimate hits to her credit.

Let’s put this in perspective. Since the year 2000, J-Lo has had 10 films. According to Box Office Mojo, in that same time period there have been 136 movies that have made over $100 million.

So, 136 films since 2000 with over $100 million. ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX!!!! Surely a “Bankable Star” who has made 10 films in that time period MUST have 2 or 3 films in that huge 136 number right? RIGHT!?!?! Oh wait… no she doesn’t.

So Lopez has 10 films since 2000 and NONE, ZERO of them are even in the top 136 films at the box office for that time period?!?!

So tell me again how J-Lo is a “Bankable Star”.

  8. hey john,

the funny thing about your comment saying Jennifer Lopez not having any hit movies is that you failed to see that Bruce Willis and Nicholas Cage have been in nothing but bombs for a long time. Bruce Willis hasn’t had a hit in practically 5 years with expensive bombs like Hostage, Tears of the Sun, Hart’s war, Bandits.

Nicolas Cage has many more failures than J-Lo. He had nothing but failures from ’98-’05 with the exeption of National Treasure and Gone in 60 seconds.

Weather Man, Lord of War, Matchstick men, Adaptation, Windtalkers, Captain Corelli, 8MM, and Snake eyes all did bad. It seems Nic cage can’t get a huge hit without Jerry Bruckheimer since Con Air, The ROck, and National Treasure were all his movies.

  9. -I’ll be honest, my only source of news I get is from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. He has the best way of presenting the news real or fake. Jon Stewart will definitely do well at the Oscars, at least I know I’ll laugh.

-Jennifer Lopez’s movies are stupid and I can’t ever remember seeing a movie of hers that I liked. But for you to say that ALL of her movies bomb can’t be true. Her movies have been box office moneymakers.

-Great show. Wish it was longer though

  10. I believe The Wedding Planner was a genuine hit for J. Lo. I remember she wasthe first person to have a #1 movie and a #1 album in the same week. Also, I think Monster-in-Law did at least okay…?

  11. Congrats on the Movie Blog’s success.

    1) The Superman pix look good. I could care less about the ‘package’, because I do think too much of a deal is made out of it. It’s not like the Schumacher Batmaan codpieces and the tits on Batgirl.

    2) I used to be a J Lo defender, once upon a time. I liked her in ‘Angel Eyes’, although the film was promoted wrong. ‘Anaconda’ was a guilty pleasure. “Out Of Sight’ is her BEST film. Then…I…started not to like her acting anymore…part of it was due to the fact that instead of promoting her films, good or bad, there was more promotion of her tabloidish love life. There was this spot on MTV once, when her divorce from Chris Judd wasn’t final and she was with Ben Affleck…and she’s spilling it about sex with Affleck on MTV.

I lost respect for her. Then the whole Bennifer #1 overshadowed the rotten film that DESTROYED her career (or what was left of it) and then she got Marc Anthony to leave his lovely wife. If it wasn’t for Paris Hilton and Tara Reid, J Lo would be the biggest name in Corn Flakes.

That’s why Carmen got yanked. Someone found out this wasn’t the J Lo from ‘Out Of Sight’, this was the J Lo flake. She needs to beg Steven Soderbergh for a gig. She needs to stop being a flake.

    3) Secret Window.

    4) Yes, some big names aren’t as big as the used to be, although thaat new film with Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen has me pumped; having Spike Lee behind the camera only gained my intrest. Denzel and Spike together again! Hot damn! My ass is in the seat. Everyone join me.

Despite his rantings on Oprah and debates with Brooke Shields, Tom Cruise is still bankable, John. People still go see Cruise.

    -Sealer out.

  12. Good show as usual guys.

However Doug is right about Routh only getting hired for the size of his package :p. Also in that picture I believe Superman is supposed to be holding the Daily Plant globe over his head, but I quickly forgot about that seeing Routh’s now very smooth and streamlined bulge.

I am not sure how many adverts you guys have over their in Canada but here in the UK we have maybe 5mins of them, 5 – 10 mins of trailers and then the film. Not something I get particularly concerned over.

And yes all that self indulgence at the beginning MAY have got me to vote for you guys on the bloggies, but you won’t know till results day ;)
