Audio Edition – December 28th 2005

Yes, I’m a day late getting this posted up… but hey… it’s the holidays.

On this installment of The Audio Edition, Doug and I are joined my good friend a world traveller just returning from Hong Kong Cameron Fernihough. We talk about the new prospects of a Conan movie with or without Arnold, who should host the Oscars this year, the Top 10 DVD released of 2005, Mel Gibson’s new Apocalypto trailer and his apparent growing fondness for being crazy looking, missing movie endings, the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer, Disney and Pixar apparently kissing and making up and a few things more.

  1. I give honor to Arnold, but there’s a reason that his greatest roles have been robots and characters that coincidentally have Austrian accents (such as “Dutch” Schaeffer in Predator). He can’t convey subtle emotions and he still hasn’t kicked his accent (unlike Dolph Lundgren).

Indications are that the next movie will reboot the saga, with a young Conan. For a young talent that could pull off the role off well, I’d look to Paul Telfer, from the recent miniseries on Conan.

There are plenty of good actors out there, let’s leave the bodybuilders and wrestlers to what they do best.

  2. you guys are actually differing with me a bit on some things. how out of the ordinary!!!!

first off, i was surprised that Doug wouldnt see the comical hillarity in Mel Gibson’s easter egg… i laughed my ass off after rushing to get onto the trailer once again to see the frame i’d missed…

i agree with you , John… in that Mel has more balls than anyone in the movie industry that i know of…

i also disagree that the pirates of the carribean movie trailer looks like a million bucks… i live with 2 women who are both depp fans and they practically GUSHED at the little of him they saw.

the swordfight in the wicker ball thingie looks like it may work well.

    The seamonsters look killer!!!!

and thank god pixar and disney are back together. their split worried me on the future of BOTH companies. i think Pixar needs disney’s distribution and disney needs their talent. perhapse they both would have done well, but now together, we KNOW great things are still to come.

    i hate penguins.

    that is all. : )

  3. 1) Would have been great if, when Richard arrives in Canada, you all do an Audio Edition…and give the listeners the surprise. Would have been nice. Oh, and guess what?

I didn’t think ‘Braveheart’ was as good as the Oscars honored it. Some battles were nicely done, but on the whole, I never got into the picture.

    2) “Pirates” can save Orlando Bloom’s career. I still like Keira Knightley, and would drink some tea with her. Not sure what’s up with the trailer music. Need temp music? Take the music from the first picture.

    3) While I was the one who recalled Ralph Moeller, who, like Sven-Ole Thorsen, is a pal of Arnie. Moller, along with Jesse Ventura, cameoed as security guards escorting Mr. Freeze in ‘Batman & Robin’. Note: James Earl Jones was in the first Best Of The Best as the Olympic Tae Kwon Do coach; he did not appear in the Best Of The Best sequels. I still would like to see Philip Rhree do more action flicks, though.

I’m thinking…what if…they approached Daniel Cudmore for a young Conan? He’s still a new face, and he has some fanbase thanks to his brief roles in the X-Men films.

And don’t knock Dolph Lundgren too much. Dolph can act when given the chance. The John Woo TV film Blackjack shows this, and he was nearly a chamelon playing the Street Preacher in the otherwise idiotic ‘Jonny Mnuemonic’. Also, he isn’t afraid to play villians.

    4) I liked the DVD list. I don’t care for the fluff pieces that aired on E! or MTV, I hate movie premiere footage (after you see it once…) and branching is for shit.

I hope the list meant the Deluxe Batman Begins, and not the one disc, full frame bare bones garbage.

  4. I usually find DVD extras to be boring.

Most times the deleted scenes have been deleted for a reason. And making of features are all the same.

However, the Revenge of the Sith extra “Two Minutes” is AMAZING.

    Commentaries are good sometimes…

my favorite is on Apollo 13 with the actual astronaut (Jim Lovell) and his wife. Also the Wes Anderson (Royal Tanenbaums, Bottle Rocket, etc) commmentaries are great.

I agree with you for the most part about subtitles John, but I’m boycotting “Memoirs of a Geisha” exactly because it should be subtitled. The authenticity is so gone for me regarding that film because their English sounds horrible and fake, and it just ruins it.

  5. What do people think about Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in Pirates II and III. Their characters may have been necessary for the original but the characters (and the acting) was so stiff and boring that I was hoping they’d be dropped in favor of more Captain Jack.

Also, Johns comments about Schwarzenegger being a bad actor gets me. I really feel that most of his better movies couldn’t be filled by anyone else. He’s not Tom Hanks, but he does fit the roles he gets perfectly. He makes the accent work for him and for a (former) muscle head he’s got a pretty good sense of humor.

  6. Dougie, Arnie was magnificent in the original Conan movies, but unfortunately he is now under the entirely false impression that he can act. I have no doubt in my mind that he would fuck the role up completely by insisting that he has some kind of deep dialogue or more emotional aspect to the role. In short, I have to agree with John on this one – MAKE CONAN WITHOUT ARNIE – it will be great!

It’s good to hear you back after the festivities guys.

  7. Tell you what, after those comments I ‘ain’t coming! Oh, and who’s drinking who under the table? I’m Scottish!…

Surprises are hard to keep, especially that big! We have (okay, she has) shopping planned, snowboarding, sightseeing, and that’s about four days so far…few more left!!
