The Audio Edition: Special Batman Begins Edition

After a long 2 week hiatus, The Audio Edition is back! This week Doug and I discuss the new and improved Batman as we talk about Batman Begins.

If any of you read my review of Batman begins you already know I thought it was a fantastic film. What does Doug think about it? Well… listen and find out. We also quickly cover Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the curse of the shaking camera and a few things more.

  1. Loved the film!

I am not a big fan of the type of shots used during the fight sequences either but I believe this was a stylistic choice meant to do two things:

    1) recreate the ambience of the real bats swarming in the caves ie bodies and wings everywhere

    and

    2) highlight the quick strike aspect of the ninja style Batman showing the fear of the criminals.

Still there were sequences ie when fighting the other ninjas, where Nolan could have pulled the camera back.

The BO numbers for the movie are disappointing though – hope this does not cripple the sequel in anyway.

Great review – you and Doug have a great rapport.

    Look forward to more installments.

  2. Thanks a lot for a really tremendous web site. I appreciate the work you put in to it.

Listening to your audio review was surreal. It was as if you reached into my thoughts and plucked them out. My main gripe with the film has to do with the action shot editing. I want to SEE what is happening, not guess at it. It is a trend in modern film that seems like a cop-out to me. It’s like today’s director says, “Don’t worry about the fight, we can film it fast and make it look good in editing by blurring and shaking things up.” For some types of film it may make sense to edit that way, but not for a Batman action movie.

I did not mind the job Katie Holmes did as much as you did. She was not great mind you, to me you seemed to paint the job she did as outright terrible. When talking about the acting, I think mention should also be given to the jobs that Tom Wilkinson did as Falcone and Cillian Murphy did as Crane. Fantastic performances. Rutger Hauer did not have much to do but it was neat seeing him none the less.

You mentioned that some critics are panning the film. The reason that many give only prove that they don’t get the point. One said that it was not flashy and comedic enough like its predecesors. Really now. I say thank goodness.

I don’t particularly like critics that pan films because the film is not what they expected or because the film does not meet the expectations of what they perceive the film is supposed to be. Batman Begins should be reviewed as a film and not as something that is supposed to fit into someone’s idea of what a Batman film should be. For instance, I think Burton’s first Batman film is a very good movie. If someone asked my opinion if they should see it I’d say sure you’ll probably enjoy it. But if I were rating it according to what I think a Batman film should be I would say it sucked pure and simple.

I had given up on seeing a really true Batman film. To me, the best representation of Batman outside the comics lies in WB’s Batman Animated series of a few yeras back. I regard the Burton and Pewmucker films as Batman in name only.

    This film NAILED it.

Both as a moive AND as what the Batman story is all about.

  3. Good Audio Edition, but now there’s rumors about Mark Hamill to be the next Joker. They’ve been flying around quite a bit lately, I like Mark Hamill but Crispin Glover would OWN that role. And Christian Bale wanting an R-rated Batman? Bat-sex anyone?
