Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow to Star in Supernatural Romance Thud

A new supernatural romance titled Thud is officially in the works, featuring a high-concept premise and a compelling lead duo. The project will star Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Grim Reaper and Rudy Pankow as the Devil. The film is set to be directed by Mali Elfman, who previously made her feature directorial debut with the 2022 film Next Exit.

The story follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they meet at a three-day destination wedding. While they arrive at the event to sow their own respective forms of chaos, the two supernatural entities end up falling in love after a chance collision. The script for the film was written by Noga Pnueli, known for her work on the time-travel romantic comedy Meet Cute.

Production Details and Context

The production is backed by Radio Silence, with Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin serving as executive producers. The film is scheduled to shoot in Los Angeles, utilizing a California tax credit. Additional producers include Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste, with further executive production support from Helmstreet Productions, Divide/Conquer, and Pnueli.

This project marks another collaboration between Gellar and the Radio Silence team, following their work together on the upcoming Ready or Not: Here I Come. For director Mali Elfman, Thud represents a continuation of her work in the genre space, building on a career that includes producing credits on films such as Birth/Rebirth and the horror anthology Scare Package. The unique premise of pairing the Grim Reaper and the Devil in a romantic setting offers a fresh take on supernatural storytelling that should be interesting to watch as production moves forward.
