I do have to disagree with the idea that Wonder Woman is not an important and impactful entity. What you say about how important it is to have our moms, aunts, sisters, etc. as our female role models is true, but it ignores the fact that all of us want to see ourselves as heroic in pop culture. For women who have never had a female superhero take the lead in a legitimately good movie, this is a watershed moment. She is an inspiring person, whether fictional or not. If the upcoming Black Panther movie is good, you will see a similar outpouring of emotion and pride from African-Americans because opportunities to be the lead hero in what is now the most popular genre of film are few and far between. For females, there have been even fewer chances. This film’s success is especially sweet when one of the reasons (excuses) given for not having more superhero flicks starring women is that they just don’t sell. That is proven absolutely false. Sure, the real women in our lives and those who have achieved important things should be celebrated as role models. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t have fictional ones, as well.
