As CIA's last strategy analyst in Saigon, and one of
Kennedy's key interviewees, I can say authoritatively that she shortchanged
critical facts and players in Saigon's indecent end game, gave Kissinger an
unchallenged opportunity to scapegoat Congress and American anti-war sentiment,
ignored our allies' own fatal corruption and weakness, soft-soaped the
delusional Ambassador who suppressed key intelligence and early warnings signs
of disaster, gave undue credit for the desperate heroics of the evacuation to
military personnel who were surpassed in saving truly high risk Vietnamese by
State Department and CIA officers whom she left utterly unmentioned, and
reduced to invisibility more than seventy Americans, including two Marine
guards, who were killed or captured during the final days while trying to do
right by our imperiled Vietnamese friends and colleagues. She tried to answer
my written criticism to her by claiming that "historians" helped her
"clarify" the harmlessness of her omissions. But she declined my
request that she identify those historians and explain what criteria they had
used to determine which omissions were harmless, and to whom. For background on
my exchanges with her, and comments from journalists Jim Laurie and Arnold
Isaacs, who witnessed the fall of Saigon first hand as I did, please check the
web for it using my name.
