As the L.A. Critics made their alternative film critique statement declaring “Amour” the Best Film of 2012 (another movie that hasn’t sold a single ticket to the general public) while giving needed love to two of the very best movies of the year (“The Master” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild”), even more critics are chiming in with lists and awards from Detroit to St. Louis to Washington, DC to Pheonix. Likewise, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, or otherwise known to many of you as the Critics Choice, announced their nominations for 2012’s Best Film. “Lincoln” collected a record 13 nominations! I still consider the Steven Spielberg picture the Oscar frontrunner, and I’m glad it did well among the critics. I never like when critical consensus and the Oscar front runners never align but its even better when the audience, critics, and awards nominations agree. This is the case with “Lincoln.” The usual suspects in this year’s Award Season are showing up on this list from “Argo” to “Zero Dark Thirty.” (I think I might have to coin that term.)
Also, I really liked that this organization separated out performances and films based upon genre as well. From comedy to horror to action, it takes dedication and hard work to make a well done genre picture. Likewise, filmmakers should be rewarded. Kudos to this organization for doing this and the above Best Picture list looks almost identical to my Top Ten list! I’m such a critic. Awards will be announced January 10th.
