Matthew Vaughn To Make “The Golden Age”, A Film About Retired Superheroes?

The director/writer of X-Men: First Class and Kick Ass is trying to make a film about retired superheroes. He says he has a major Hollywood studio behind him and wants to attach a cast before the script is finished, with his wishlist containing Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty (That is a hell of a wishlist!).
The Golden Age will be based of the new comic book of the same name, which will be written by UK chat show host and comic/film buff Jonathan Ross. Ross is also Jane Goldman’s (Vaughns longtime writing partner) husband, althought its not yet been announced if she will be involved. I imagine she would be.
Deadline Reports

Vaughn believes the success of The Expendables and Red shows that audiences are open to the idea of older action heroes. “You have these great star names and they’re mainly playing supporting roles now. I want to give them the lead again and let them have some fun.”

The same article also mentions how he might not direct, but produce. I’m all up for this, I love the corny innocence and goodness to older superheroes compared to more modern, gritty versions. I’d love it if it theres a ton of contrast between the different generations (apparently theres going to be three generations of heroes in this).

What kind of things would you guys like to see in a film about retired superheroes? Keep in mind it wont feature any of the heroes you know and love, but its bound to have doppelgängers.

  1. I think that the misfire that was the Watchmen film adaptation squashed any hope of this being an original and unique idea. The relationship between Dan Dreiberg and Hollis Mason said all that was needed on the subject if you ask me, and of course that was one of the things that was nixed from the theatrical cut. That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Clint Eastwood do something a bit lighter these days.

  2. Am I the only one who thinks this would be a great vehicle for Arnold to get back in the realm of action movies? I can already picture him as an older Superman type character.

  3. Grumpy old Supers! could work.

    more like Crusty old Supers.

I might be alone on this but, I didnt LOVE Red like most other people.
Fun stuff, Loved Mirren and Malkovitch, but not much else in that one.

    different strokes I guess.

      1. No worries man!
for every “Killers” theres a “Knight and Day”
for every Jack Black movie(after Ten.”D”)theres a Kevin James one
for every “Spiderman 2” theres a “Dark Knight”

        you get my drift bro.

        :)
