Like Castle91 said the old live action movie (1990 wasn’t it?) was a good blend of funny and gritty. But I do agree that they’ve been funny for so long (there’s nearly a generation of folks that grew up on funny stuff) that it will be really hard to get back to the old grit and grime.

I would really love to see the Turtles in all of their original, gritty glory, but I honestly think they’ve been funny for too long. I doubt a gritty film version would be seen with much respect, much less attract an audience of profitable size. I hope somebody greenlights this, but I have doubts.
I rather liked the original film, and I think it carried a decent balance between the darkness of New York City and the turtles themselves. Because honestly, it’s somewhat of a difficult situation to believe 5’9″ anthropomorphic turtles exist, talk, and use martial arts.
