I’ve watched most of Kubrick’s films from 2001 to Full Metal Jacket and found his pacing just not to my liking. I don’t know if I’d consider him a Master. He achieves great things technically but holistically his movies have always seemed to lack something. Being a former Marine who trained at Parris Island, I found Full Metal Jacket to be the most accurate depiction of PI boot camp ever put on film. Yet Kubrick loses it during the second act. I was a still combat photographer in the Corps and his vision of a Marines time in the Fleet was off somewhat. The movie almost makes no point at all. Eye’s Wide Shut was also a mess. With Kubrick I think he wanted the audience to form their own opinions in regards to the meaning of his work but sometimes that can make the movie itself hard to sit through.
