My feeling with 3-D is it can be a useful tool, but if a studio uses it for a movie, the movie’s got to be epic… and they need to have a 2-D version of it that still looks good.

Thus far, I’ve only seen 2 movies in 3-D where I thought it added to the experience: How to Train Your Dragon and Avatar.

As long as they keep making movies in 2D, I’m really indifferent about 3D. It’s just another way to see a film. I personally don’t like it. It gives me headaches, and I don’t want to wear those annoying glasses just to see a movie. I often find myself wanting to take off the glasses after an hour. I have a feeling 3D won’t fade out for a long time. As it stands now, for me it’s just a gimmick. Perhaps in 20 years 3D will see an advancement that adds real immersion in a movie and not just depth or things popping out at you. There definitely is potential there, but right now it’s not utilized well enough IMO.

It’s very interesting you’d say that, Ricci! The facts and data being collected are actually, surprisingly, supporting you: 3-D is proving to be a fad and gimmick for film and Hollywood, but is showing to be something that may stick around for television programs like sports and music, and also for video games.

There is an absolutely fascinating examination of the fiscal climate of 3-D, the number of converted screens and the diminishing public interest in 3-D by film theorist Kristin Thompson I would love to share with you all.

I haven’t been all that impressed with the 3D movies I have seen at the cinema.

The best I have seen so far has been Jackass 3D, because it really did work, and it lent itself to all the tricks that can be done in 3D (the dildo in slow motion coming towards you out of the screen lol).

That said, I recently got myself a 3D TV, and it is brilliant
My purchase came with the Shrek Quadrilogy in 3D and as a showpiece of what this technology can provide it was amazing, crystal clear high definition with great use of 3D, it just really works well.

In the UK, I also have Sky 3D which is broadcastings sports movies and specials in 3D, and I’m very impressed with Football(Soccer) In 3D, while watching it with surround sound on it really is the closest you can get without being there.

Onto gaming in 3D, Gran Tourismo 5 on the PS3, with surround sound, steering wheel and pedals, sat inside the car in the cockpit, in 3D is almost like being there, well maybe not almost, but it’s still pretty sweet.

I think the best 3D experiance is at home, and it is here to stay.

I was a hard lined skeptic. I have only seen a couple movies in 3D and they were excellent in the way they used 3D. Resident Evil Afterlife and Megamind. I saw Tron in 3D and it was mediocre in how it used 3D (did not pop, action too fast to appreciate the 3D, blurry or hazy in many scenes defeating the sharpness and clarity of the 3D).

I agree with all the criticisms and would not be sad to see it fail. However, if all movies were like Megamind and Resident Evil then I would be impressed and would enjoy dropping $3 more per movie.

PS. I did not say Resident Evil Afterlife was a good movie, far from it, just the 3D. However Megamind is a great movie in addition to the 3D.

In reply to Mattman. sorry, but i don't think it will go away. We have reach a time and age that technology is here to stay. Especially 3d. With all the HD movies, games, projection, heck even holographic ones.

I agree with all the reasons listed by everyone as to why 3D is bad. I cant stand it anymore. Messes with my eyes, dims the colors, and since I wear glasses I cant place the 3D glasses over my prescription glasses so everything loses clarity even more than the darker, dimming 3D glasses.

I’ve tried to like 3D, but it’s just not doing it for me. Every time I put the glasses on it the picture seems to get dimmer. Some of the films I’ve seen like My Soul to Take, Last Airbender, and Clash of the Titans all got converted to 3D and they turned out to be bad experiences. Most of time I didn’t even need the glasses as hardly anything was in 3D. I saw The Green Hornet and the only 3D part that amazed me were the end credits. I think People are going to get tired of it eventually.

I dislike 3D for the same reasons you stated:

1. It does not add enough to the experience to warrant the extra cost
2. It gives me a headache
3. It degrades the color and contrast of the film if done incorrectly – which all of the conversions are guilty of

I wish it would go away.

I’ve come to hate 3D. Not just because I can no longer watch it due to eye problems that have forced me to wear glasses, but because I’ve read of too many instances where 3D added very little, or absolutely nothing, to viewers’ enjoyment of a movie. In some cases, like Clash of the Titans, 3D even detracted from that enjoyment.

But as recently shown with Paramount and Star Trek, and now this article, the entertainment industry’s CEOs are drooling at the mouth at the thought of the extra cash brought in by the 3D surcharge. They don’t give a damn about product quality, or viewers’ enjoyment, or, judging from this article, the safety of their customers’ eyes. Jeff Katzenberg can rot.
