In reply to bernard. Completely agree. Christopher Nolan should have been nominated for best director in place of David O. Russell. Personally, I don't think The Fighter is as phenomenal of a movie so many people give it credit for. The main character was uninteresting and the script was very weak. The only outstanding aspects of The Fighter is Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. Amy Adams was good, but Bale and Leo made everyone look like amateurs. If the movie was primarily about Dicky, it would have been a much stronger film.

The Social Network was a good movie but IMO not best picture…the movie as a whole was basically laid out for them basically being a biopic. Reading the book it was based on and having even a vague idea of how facebook started leaves very little room for imagination…Social Network is overhyped…just like Avatar was last year.

I also feel a bit bummed for Nolan not to have at least a nod on Director Nom. He didn’t get it for Memento (it definitely an arthouse indie movie type). Not in TDK. And now a threepeat of snubbed. Having said that, i also take a look back and notice that even great ones like Scorcese didn’t get an oscar for his best works (like…Taxi driver), only about 30 yrs later he got what he deserve decades earlier for his remake of hongkong movie (you know what). Or Spielberg who didn’t even get nominated until Schindler’s List. So i’m pretty optimistic Nolan will get his due in the future….. if somehow Oscar still relevant.

In reply to Lawrence. The Academy will always take heat for who they don't nominate. But who is a weak link? I don't see one. And the charge that the Academy only honors "art house" films is not only not true, but is that statement to suggest that even low budget indies that are well acted, written and directed not have any chance at all? And they didn't honor Nolan for his "art house" films much, did they?

In reply to Mondz. For most of us, Chris Nolan always creates excellent movies. He can take consolation that his movies are always being patronized and liked by most people, plus the fact his movies are always in everyone's conversation . I just can't understand how the Academy people think nowadays. The Academy guys tend to favor the art house movies that most of us don't even watch. Screw you Academy people for not giving Chris Nolan his long overdue nod for a Best Director nomination.

I really hope The Social Network doesn’t sweep all of the awards. True, it was a great movie and it was extremely well made, but after having seen it I have no desire to watch it again. I know how Facebook was formed… I am pretty much done with it now. As for best actress, I will be pretty upset if Natalie Portman doesn’t win. Her performance in Black Swan is definitely one of the most convincing performances I have seen. She worked her butt off for the role and sold it. I am not as strongly opinionated in the other categories because most things that were nominated this year were great and there are still a couple of the films that I need to watch.

IMO a much better lineup than last year.

Best Animated Film: should win/will win: Toy Story 3
Best Adapted Screenplay: should win/will win: Aaron Sorkin
Best Original Screenplay: should win: Christopher Nolan will win: David

MTV Movie Awards, People’s Choice etc. All based on “normal people’s votes” and those are even MORE ripe with inconsistencies.

they need to have an awards show called ‘normal people who know how to appreciate good movies choice awards’.
