The two worlds co-existing also was in Space Jam if you recall. It even went as far as to show how the incident literally stopped a cartoon dead in it’s track as it was airing.

I read it as former, human partner. Not formerly. I imagine they once worked together and decide to join forces once again. One a puppet the other a human.
