Ruffalo Says Hulk Will Be Motion Captured For The Avengers

Last time we saw the big green guy on screen was back in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Here he was completely CGI. So how is Marvel going to go about Hulk for their big Avengers film? Will he be all CGI again? Will he maintain the same appearance as in 2008’s version? Apparently the actor who’s going to be playing him has spoken a little bit about this.

CinemaBlend reports:

Mark Ruffalo, who was announced as the new Bruce Banner at this year’s Comic Con, recently spoke with Vulture and revealed that Marvel is ditching the pure-CGI Hulk in favor of motion capture. According to the actor, they plan on doing it in the same way as James Cameron’s Avatar, with “stop-action, stop-motion capture.” What this means is that Ruffalo will be the first actor to actually “play” the Hulk since Lou Ferrigno in the television series.

As for playing Banner in his human form, Ruffalo is over the moon, saying that he is planning to do his performance in the style of Bill Bixby: “He was an everyman in it. He’s always on the run and trying to find love. It’s really a sympathetic character, before he turns into the Hulk and fucks everything up.”

I really liked the 2008 version of the Hulk. I also really enjoyed the movie. Personally, I would love for them to keep it like that, but with some facial expressions from Ruffalo. I’m not entirely convinced about changing it to motion capture once again. I thought they nailed the 2008 version pretty good. I guess I’ll wait until we get the first image of this new Avengers version of mo-cap.

What do you guys think? Should they use mo-cap? Should they keep it CGI?

  1. Does motion capture speed up the process of actually creating the CG character over the top of the actor? It seemed to work quite well in LOTR with a motion capture Gollum.
I’m not an animator but I would think it’s help rather than a hindrance.

  2. They need motion capture. THe first two hulk movies were ok but in each one the HULK himself was what made the movie unbelievable. Hopefully with Ruffalo doing the mo-cap, they can give the hulk a bit more of something to connect him to bruce.
