I remember that old Popeye movie with Robin Williams which was really quite funny and didn’t take itself too seriously. I don’t think a CGI version would be that funny.

I’m a fan of the Fleischer and Famous Studies Popeye cartoons. In fact, I’ve written a book coming out soon on the Famous Studies cartoons. If the new movie can recapture some of the older cartoons’ magic, then I’m all for it. If it’s going to be like “Quest For Pappy” or “Popeye and Son” or the live action movie, then I will stay home.

They actually made a direct-to-video CGI Popeye a few years ago called “The Quest for Pappy.”

And it sucked.

In reply to Kaneda979. Oh, I didn't know Smurfs was going to be CGI/live action mixed. Or maybe I did read that but just forgot. Damn it, CGI/live action movies based on old school cartoons never turn out good. Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, I've been telling people Smurfs is going to be all CGI and I was looking forward to it. Oh well. :(

I’m hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I can’t see this being appealing at all, unless they’re deciding to make a parody of Popeye or are going to make it more adult-oriented.

At any rate, I don’t expect it to be very good

In reply to Kaneda979. The Smurfs is going to be a combination of CG and live action. This is an animated CG feature. Not at all comparable.

In reply to Jeremy K.. Agreed. I mean I can see why they're making Smurfs a CGI movie, but not Popeye. Plus I never liked the old Popeye cartoon much when I was a kid, but I really liked the Robin Williams movie. I'll pass for now. Who knows, maybe the trailer will impress me, until then this just seems like a bad idea.
