Kevin Smith Making A Hockey Movie

To all of my dear America friends, repeat after me: “Hockey is the greatest and more pure expression of athleticism and sports that mankind has ever, or will ever, conceive of.” There, don’t you feel a little bit smarter just for saying those holy and wise words?

Kevin Smith is one of my favorite guys in the movie business. Don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying he’s one of the best filmmakers… but certainly one of my favorite guys (I don’t like all his movies, but I do have Clerks 2 on my top 10 all time best comedies list). And now Kevin is fulfilling his destiny. Nay, the destiny of the film industry as a whole. He’s making a movie about Hockey!

The film will be based on the song: “Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song).” The good folks over at Worst Previews give us this:

The new movie will be set in the late 1970s within the World Hockey Association, before those teams were absorbed into the National Hockey League. “It takes place during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting,” Smith said.

There will certainly be lots of humor in the script, but Smith envisions the film as being more dramatic in nature and possibly an Oscar-winner. “I never once thought about winning awards or anything, but that movie I think can do it,” he said. “If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie.”

Damn skippy this movie could win awards Kevin! It’ll eclipse the record of 11 Oscars held by Return of the King EASY. I’m think 39 Oscars. Yes… that means they’ll have to create new categories just to give to this movie.

Now go watch some sweet NHL playoff action.

  1. And just talking now with a flyers fan and hearing the b.s. lines like, all the players are swedish or russian, no one can relate….i hate these comments. If people were exposed in the right ways to today’s hockey, there would be a fanbase that is unrelenting, the skill and speed the guys have, it’s a great sport to watch…..maybe philly needs to update their scouting, if you live in a city that either has no hockey, or thinks it is still the 1970s, get these guys on your rosters!!!! ok i’m done.

  2. Anything to help promote hockey!! With turds like gary bettman running this beloved sport it’s no wonder why ESPN told him to get-out; and no wonder why american fans have zero exposure to the NHL. Having your national coverage on a cable station barely anyone can get= priceless! GO WINGS GO, BACK TO BACK!!

I like Smith, it should be funny.

  3. “There is no one at all in Hollywood that I would trust a Hockey movie to more than Kevin Smith.”

I definately agree with that! Not a huge hockey fan myself, but I love Kevin Smith. So I will be willing to give it a chance.

Though Clerks 2 on your top 10 all time best comedies list? That’s a joke.

  4. And not even 1 mention of the charity ball hockey tournament in Brantford in June?!?!?! Shame on you :p
He’ll make a GREAT HOCKEY MOVIE (Thank GOD for doing it before they got rid of some REAL rules!)

That being said….Hockey is not the master of all sports after the stupid line regulation! It was ours (just like basketball) and it got taken away to please the masses of people who can’t play or follow it! My athletic side is taking over my emotions at this point…Mo**** F%$^#$ G$% D$$^ B*#% S@($!!!!

  5. A pretty good hockey movie from quebec (thus in french) is the Rocket.

It’s an autobiography of Maurice “Rocket” Richard one of the greatest hockey players to ever play.

You get to see the Rocket punch the crap out of the NHL’s most hated super pest Sean Avery who plays the part of some enforcer.

  6. Let’s go HURRICANES!!!! I used to work at Rex Hospital in Raleigh and (though it’s unethical to admit this) I’ve had the opportunity to work with more than half of the team personally. Great people! THE BEST SPORT EVER!!!!!

  7. meh…hope it will be good, hockey is a great sport, but smiths been lacking a lil lately….HATED clerks 2, and zach and miri wasnt that good

    1. actually i think that’s been amended

lacrosse is the official summer sport.

hockey is the official winter sport.

i think lacrosse is even crazier than hockey although it’s hard getting used to the fact that you can’t stick check in lacrosse. Just one of many great things rooted in Native American culture.

  8. I wish to hell Warner Bros. had filmed Smith’s “Superman Lives” script that was circulating on the web (I still have a copy!!!) in the late 90’s..it was great! Not much of a hockey fan but if he’s connected to it I’ll check it out.

    1. People wish Kevin Smiths treatments of comic book heroes are used all the time. But they don’t.

His treatment for Green Hornet will be made into a comic book, and soon he will be doing a 12 issue series for Batman that will introduce a new hero that he will be helming.

  9. Love Hockey, but I am a New York Islanders fan and they suck right now.

    Best Hockey Film: Slap Shot

(That is on my 10 ten funniest movies of all time)
