Shia LaBeouf Set To Star In The Associate

BeefWe have word today that The Beef will be playing a lawyer in the upcoming legal thriller The Associate. We get the following scoop thanks to our friends at comingsoon:

Paramount Pictures has set Shia LaBeouf to play the title role in the big screen version of John Grisham’s upcoming legal thriller “The Associate,” which the studio has just acquired rights to. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

Variety says LaBeouf will play a student who’s about to graduate from Yale Law School when he’s manipulated into accepting a job at a prestige law firm and given privileged information about a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.

I’m not big on legal dramas, thrillers, comedies yadda, yadda, yadda. Court is a place I never want to be, and I get little satisfaction from watching cases unfold on screen. There are exceptions to this rule of course. To Kill A Mockingbird is great, as is the deliberation boiler room known as 12 Angry Men (the original, not the Tony Danza remake).

Also, love him or hate him – is Shia “The Beeflord” going to be able pull off a role as a lawyer? I know the character is fresh out of school, but I’m not sure I see Shia as the most “sellable” in this role. Maybe its just me however, he could be exceptional in front of the judge – we will wait and see.

International Friends – have any of you read this book? If so, what do you think about this news, is The Beef the man for the job, or do you consider this to be a miscast?

  1. I loved the book and I am so glad that it is being made into a movie. When I first heard Leboeuf was set to play the lead role, I thought it wasn’t a good fit. I pictured the lead character as a pretty-boy type…really good looking, preppy, etc….kind of like a Rob Lowe type (only younger)… I think he’ll do a good job at any rate.

  2. I LOVED THIS BOOK. DEFO one of Grisham’s best. im surprised they picked shia labeouf to play Kyle McAvoy…hmm not sure if he’ll fit the role but he’s an amazing actor so he’ll probably be able to sell it. cant wait for the movie!!

  3. This was a great book. Half- way through I told myself I would love to see it on screen. If you’ve read the book, you’ll know there is no lawyer-ing in it. So that’s not going to be an issue. I thin Shia might pull it off.

  4. What is this? The Firm 2? It’s a miscast, Shia sucks. I follow the theory that he’s been privileged by someone in Hollywood and that he’s there because of that influence and not that he’s any good, just another bloke in the crowd.

  5. My god, Shia is in everything, but he doesn’t seem like lawyer material to me, even a young one. Oh well, the only Courtroom movie I could sit through was My Cousin Vinney. That movie was great!

  6. yeah shia can sell it. he’s pretty much on his way to being the jewish tom cruise, pre-couch jumping. or at least thats’s what paramount thinks, since this is pretty much the firm part 2 with shia taking on cruise’s role.
