Little Closer to Arrested Development Film

News has been flying about for a while now that the canceled Arrested Development will continue on as a feature film. Well we get just one more bit of news that makes this all seem more a reality than a rumour now.

Speculation has been fueled by cast members, including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor, being frequently quoted in interviews as saying that plans were in the works to bring the dysfunctional Bluth family to the big screen.

Mitch Hurwitz, who created and executive produced the Emmy-winning series, is on board to write the film for arthouse studio Fox Searchlight as well as direct with help from Ron Howard, whose Imagine banner was among the show’s producers.

I was never an Arrested Development fan, but I knew a good handful of people who were. I am sure they would like to see some more of that show considering how devoted they were to it.

It seems like Hollywood is the goodbye speech podium of TV now. Successful series that run their course get another shot to give the fans a taste and perhaps close up loose threads, or tease us with new ones. But to me, I just see their dollar signs floating over their heads. They want to make a coin or two out of this for sure, but they are using it as a testing ground for the fanbase.

I wonder if any film will relaunch a canceled TV series?

  1. This is excellent news!!! I can’t wait..

“I wonder if any film will relaunch a canceled TV series?” – Lets hope they also relaunch Titus; That show is so funny it is a shame it got canceled.

  2. If it wasn’t for TV’s getting a shot at the big screen then Star Trek would have died along time ago. Need I remind everyone of a series than only ran for 3 years and was cancelled. It was the movies that made Star Trek famous. It also took 10years from the end of the Original TV show till the first movie was made in 1979.

So there is still hope for shows like Arrested Development and Firefly.

  3. Hmmm, I dunno. I’m a huge AD fan but I kind of liked the way the series ended. A downside to it was that it was so in-jokey. It was hilarious if you watched every episode consecutively because the the running jokes that spanned multiple episode. I think it was overwhelming to the casual viewer who would see one random episode.

I really don’t know whether the AD style/format of comedy would translate better to the movie screen.
