I saw this movie when it was released in the theater in 2008 March. and have watched it a few more times since released on DVD. I was completely impressed with the acting, the dialogue and, in my opinion, this movie deserves every single nomination that it received. Yes, there is comedy mixed with violence that I understand some people find upsetting. But, this was a black comedy and it did shine!

Also, I think that Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fienes were brilliant. While there is violence, I find that if you really watch closely, the humanity and fragility of each character comes through in grand fashion. It is more of observing the subtleties throughout the movie. I have always found Colin Farrell to be an excellent actor and he outdoes himself in “In Bruges.” He truly does deserve the nomination (and, hopefully, will win) for best actor. And yes, I do hope this wins best film of the year!!

I saw this movie when it came out and loved it. Saw it again about a month ago and loved it again. It was the first time I watched Colin Farrell actually act. I was watching Farrell on screen; I was watching his character. Maybe not brilliant, maybe not fantastic, but the dialogue and acting were both really, really good. Definitely should have gotten a better trailer and a wide release. (Oh, and the soundtrack is perfect.)

I agree with you John, this was the surprise movie of the year for me as well. I rented it based on the praise from this site and enjoyed it quite a bit to say the least.

I friggin love In Bruges! I’ve watched the movie four times and it continues to be funny. It’s still my favorite movie of this year.

I really liked this movie. I don’t think it can be called “Brilliant”. Lots of other movies of it’s caliber have the same shine as it does. It’s a great movie, but nothing worth award claim.

I thought the film was good but not best picture amterial. However, Ralph Fiennes deserves a nomination for best actor he was bloody brilliant. He was really scary in the movie. 10 times scarier than the way he looks in Harry Potter.

Meh, I didn’t think it was that great. It had its moments, but on the whole I wasn’t all that impressed. Its narrative structure seemed a bit contrived and coincidence dependant, and I thought its mix of comedy and violence was kind of sick.

Caught it just recently and was really surprised at how good it was. I agree that this is the best I have seen in Farrell and Fiennes. Its a textbook definition of a dark comedy and really worth checking out!
