Matthew Vaughn Ready To Kick Ass

Kick-AssThe winds whistle with news about an adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic book Kick-Ass. we get the following scoop from the fabled caves of Yahoo:

The pieces are starting to fall into place for a feature version of “Kick-Ass,” a comic by Mark Millar that Hollywood studios have chosen not to adapt because of its violent nature. Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (“Layer Cake,” “Stardust”), who is such a believer in the material that he raised the money for the $30 million project himself, will direct the independent film. Christopher Mintz-Plasse is in negotiations for a role, and Chloe Moretz has been cast.

Written by Millar — whose “Wanted” series was adapted for the screen earlier this year — and drawn by John Romita Jr., “Kick-Ass” follows a high school dweeb who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass who seems doomed to failure because he’s not athletic or coordinated until he runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

I haven’t read this comic book, but it certainly sounds promising. It’ s cool that Matthew Vaughn believes in it so much that he was willing to raise the funds himself. I find it humorous that the comic book wasn’t considered by Hollywood due to the violent nature, and this could very well be the reason Vaughn has decided to pick it up. One man’s trash…

International Friends – for those of you that have picked up this series, please share your thoughts with us. Is the comic book any good, and would you like to see it adapted to film?

  1. I absolutely love Kick-Ass and I’m excited for a movie. I remember reading and hearing that The Walking Dead was being optioned for Showtime as a miniseries though. I just don’t remember where I read that at.

  2. i dont think kick ass sucks, but i do agree that walking dead is a fantastic book….but i would rather see a tv series tho, kirkman has made a zombie epic and THE best zombie story ever made…hands down

  3. This is a great comic book, but only 4 issues have been released so far. As long as Millar outlines the rest of the story to Vaughn, rather than having his idea ravaged by hack writers, it could turn out to be a good film.

It is a pretty hardcore comic, in a similar vein to Wanted. That comic was seriously “adapted” for the big screen. There is no way a studio would half of that book on screen as it was. If Kick-Ass does indeed stay an independant film and retain the violence of the comic, we may indeed see something special.

  4. basically its about a young (high school) comic book geek who wants to be a superhero….he has no powers and no formal training but still goes out in a scuba suit to fight crime….of course fighting agaisnt some hoodlums he gets beaten up….almost killed…after months of rehab he goes at it again….he sees a man getting jumped so he intervenes to help….he gets beaten up again but the guys leave the man alone…someone gets it all on youtube.com and he gets a rep…its a cool comic set in real life

  5. sweet….the comic is great and hopefully this being an independent flick we can get some hardcore shit….and carlos basically said everything that i was gonna

  6. The comic is actually really good. It’s very well written. It’s also super-violent. I can see why studios would shy away from it. Our “hero” is a kid who constantly puts himself in dangerous situations and, as a result, is always getting himself bloodied and broken. Kids getting beaten up is different from Batman getting beaten up.

The artist has no qualms with drawing mass amounts of blood and the writer has no problem writing the cuss words to go with that.

Put this down as a “must see” for me though. If they can capture even 1/2 the magic of the comic, it should be great.
